2:04 this might be a joke that I'm missing but the "middle class" is not typically associated with supporting the miners in Britain.
Middle Class here refers to pretty much everyone without a title or connections to the aristocracy that aren't employed in more manual ("blue collar" would be the equivalent) work, or with close family connections to that manual work. Most of Thatcher's support came from the Middle Classes, and though there were definitely many middle class people, particularly young people like Chumbawumba, opposed to Thatcher, it was by no means a given that a 'middle class' person would support Thatcher.
This isn't really a correction tho as I think middle class is defined differently in the US - I just think it's interesting how we subdivide ourselves
    Big up Chumbawumba theyre great

When I got to college in 2011 and started using the internet to dig deeper into music, one of the first things I did was check out discographies of One-Hit-wonders because I was always fascinated by the idea that "this one song cant be all they are worth" and Chumbawumba and Midnight Oil were the two that I got really into and loved the fact I dug into their works.

    • @capkernel
      @capkernel 2 года назад +44

@@nobodyburgen4594 Great question. It'll depend on your definition of either of those words, but no, not really. In fact, quite the opposite.
Anarchism is thought of by some as a subcategory of communist thought, since it ultimately strives for the same stateless, moneyless, and classless society, which is precisely what communism is. However, anarchists reject using electoralism and seizing state power as a means of reaching this society, which differentiates them from other types of communists, and that's where the confusion lies. Some think we should take control of the government to bring us closer to this ideal society, while others prefer a more decentralized approach. Still, both anarchists and Marxist-Leninists fit under the larger umbrella of communist thought.
There's also actually a pretty long history of people synthesizing Marxist and anarchist philosophy but I've been yammering long enough lol; I think I've covered the basics. Hopefully that answers your question!

Man this was a nice journey. A band millions see as a one hit wonder that didn't exist before or after tubthumping started as experimental punk sharply taking it to the thatcher administration, to going big and seemingly abandoning their roots only to use their five minutes of fame to bring their message to the world, and finally coming to a later age, taking in worldwide inspiration and adopting a folk style because they didn't have to conform to anyone's expectations for them before calling it in. Oh, and one last flip off to thatcher once the good news broke. Legends. You gave me far more respect for this band.

The ABCs of Anarchism is, IMO, incredible and deeply underrated. Love Negativland and Chumbawumba so seeing them come together was a dream. Next DDD should absolutely be on Negativland!

I love this I think it would be great if you did more videos like this. I already know about the discographies of Kanye West, Radiohead, etc, but I had no idea that chumbawumba had a such a rich discography, it would be great to see more bands and artists like this. I would also highly recommend that you do a ddd on Raymond Scott, as he was an insanely interesting musician that it feels no one really talks about

That being said, I am to totally voting for Nine Inch Nails on your form.

To answer the question, "Was Chumbawamba successful in seeding their anarchist ideology into the mainstream?" I must say yes. Perhaps it was because I was already there, long years before Tubthumping let me down. I knew it was methodical, I just needed time... Then they made Un and all was forgiven (the whole album is worthy). A clear indicator of their seeding success is that two of my three children, all raised on Chumbawamba, still listen- but even better than their musical choices is their lifestyles- their conscientious, humanitarian ideologies that don't need the music I raised them on. It just so happens that we can enjoy the music together.

I think I have the original cover version of Anarchy. It was sitting in the front of my car when my mom came to visit once.
I started with Chumbawamba with every other American on Tubthumper, but I moved past it very quickly and couldn't get enough of the rest of the album and worked backward from there. Honestly, I think it's the best band of all time.

Great video - one thing to note that the Bare Faced Hypocrisy Sells Records EP was a comp, and featured Oi Polloi and they would be very grumpy to be called an English band (16:37)
When I first started getting into Chumba, I asked good ol' Facebook "where's the best place to start with Chumbawamba?" and someone tagged Boff Whalley in the post. He suggested this EP.
(Boff also founded Commoners Choir who are an amazing collective)

If you ever want to do another DDD on a one-hit wonder with a surprisingly long career and a strong political bent, Midnight Oil is well worth checking out.
