Andre Galvao is a 6 time IBJJF World Champ and 6 time ADCC Gold Medalist. He is widely considered one of the greatest grappling competitors in history. This is an excerpt from his new series SIDE CONTROL DOMINANCE available exclusively from BJJFanatics.com.
BJJ Fanatics was started by a pair of black belts (Bernardo Faria & Michael Zenga) who feel that nothing is more important than improving your BJJ skills as much as possible in the least amount of time. Their aim was to create a shop for BJJ Students who don’t look at BJJ as a sport - but as a lifestyle.

Basic! Marcelo has taught us how to north south choke without locking the submission with your other hand. Marcelo Garcia is the GOAT!

@@Wolf2ification I agree with you 100%! But then it's those dudes who are small and thick, no homo, but are ridiculously skilled like Marcelo! He is my king of BJJ!

Is the North South choke more of a crank then a choke? It's been both before on me when applied but I've never asked if it should be more of a choke or neck crank

I have felt and done it both ways. The ideal is a choke, but with poor positioning it turns into a crank. Both/either can turn into a tap.

The choke Needs some time, you have to be pacient

With proper positioning, a clean strangle with a minimal squeeze is absolutely possible and should be the goal when executing the technique. Be patient, with moderate pressure, wait a 5 or so seconds. If they don't tap, adjust or move to a new attack rather than crush as hard as possible. One of my favourite subs!
      Additional tips:
      - Use your torso to roll their face away from you when trasition from side control
      - Play with finishing grips for arm-in vs arm-out
      - Learn chain attacks from the North-South choke: Guillotine, near-side armbar, near-side Americana, Kimura Trap system, etc.
      - Generally speaking, the North-South choke (and position) is great for opening defensive opponents, preventing guard recovery, wearing down the limbs and neck with top pressure.
