  • We have all heard of the phrase “beauty is skin deep”, suggesting skin has a rather superficial role in who we are. But what if that is not true? Claudia Aguirre tells us about the "hidden brain" in our skin and the surprising things it reveals about our mental health.
Claudia Aguirre is a Neuroscientist, Skincare Expert, Spokesperson and Lecturer, UCLA Alumni, and TEDMED contributor.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

Almost 20 years ago I was taught in my massage course that pimples, warts, cysts, "birth" marks, and more, are all trying to get your attention. The skin is the largest organ of the body. It is serving us grandly by telling us where the issues are. Look at meridians. Do the regressions and hypnotherapy. Consider reflex areas and points. Our body doesn't lie. Love this talk.

Yeah, the gut being the second brain is only confirmed to be true back in 2018. For anyone following, the trend it seems that most of eastern medicine have been true for thousands of years and western medicine are only catching up right now.

It's not that our skin has a brain of its own, it's that our body is a whole community of organisms that cooperate and listen to one another, then react in an appropriate way.

I'm a Neuroscientist turned healer. Whenever clients come to me with skin issues, the vast majority are due to accumulative stress/trauma and inherited stress/trauma. Releasing it makes the skin issues go away.
But skin is NOT unique. The vast majority of physical issues I've worked on has at its roots unresolved trauma. Whether its difficulty recovering from pain, illness, chronic disease, or any symptom.
It's the concept of the allostatic load. Anything that stresses the body increases our vulnerability to disease, illness, pain, mental, psychiatric and cognitive issues.
Her talk is intriguing, but I didn't feel like she did a good job of convincing me that the skin has its own nervous system. Whether its touch, something we see, smell or hear, we have receptors that eventually connect to the brain . To imply that it is has its own nervous system suggests to me that skin can think independently of the rest of the body. And she hasn't shown me evidence of that yet. Or is this just a hypothesis?
Western medicine thinks emotions are in the brain. Eastern medicine says they emirate from the organs. Candice Pert says they are in the peptides (which could be anywhere). Heart Math says they are represented by frequencies.
Regardless, our mental health has a far greater impact on our health than Western medicine currently appreciates. So this talk is a step in the right direction.

Very perceptive comment. I'm working with EFT (tapping) currently for some skin issues. I've studied it on-and-off for a number of years and the results are always very intriguing. I've cured myself of dorsal acne with it a few years back (results were obvious after 2 weeks of tapping 10 minutes a day, and I continued a couple of months just to really annihilate it) and the condition has never returned. I went from never wearing a bathing suit to having smooth skin.
I've never come up empty-handed with that technique - persistence and a little discipline has always led me to results. It really feels like establishing a communication line with the body.
The past few years have been quite traumatic for me and I'm going back to it now out of sheer necessity, although I would highly recommend treating traumas early - I tend to wait until my body acts-up
The body often produces metaphors, even. I've found Louise Hay's book "Heal your body" to be very helpful in identifying those. For every condition I've had and checked out in the book, the mindset was very spot-on. However, I've also found that tapping without knowledge of cause will often lead to intuitive ah-ha moments that point me in the right direction (for dorsal acne, it was high school bullying... skin defending itself against backstabbing and cruel attacks).
Sorry about the novel, but honestly I'm so happy that these aspects of human existence are getting closer and closer to exiting the "pseudoscience" label :)

I've seen a change in a wife's skin after a few years of marriage. Amazing, she started out with beautiful skin and in a few years she was sallow and full of acne and looked so different. I asked what was causing her stress with her husband (as she was quite verbal about being mad at him,) and all she could come up with was that he sat down on the toilet to pee. This was baffling. I knew her hubby was a maintenance and custodial supervisor and a working supervisor, in a school, (he was my boss), and I figured he didn't want to spill pee all over the floor because he had to clean it up from hundreds of boys slopping it on the floor. (I cleaned too so i knew they did this). So there must be something else that bothered this woman. I never found out what. I had never had anything but respect for her hubby and he was honest and clear communicating, and somehow he had disappointed her, but I don't know what it was.

A really well communicated talk. In consciousness spirituality and alternative therapies we have long known the significance of the skin which is also the largest organ of the body.
For five thousand years pus (pre-sanantadharma) our Matriarchal Dewi culture has worked with the plant energetics and understanding. I must mention this because Aromatherapy in its modern scientific explanation is powerful - but very limited to its early consciousness understanding, which includes relationships - our endogenous and exogenous relationships with ALL existence rather than a therapy context of epidermis, dermis and hypodermis and its interrelationship with the human form.
I mention these ancient traditions simply because Aromatherapy works through treating the skin and involving the senses of touch, sound, taste and often sight (e.g. colour) as well as vibrational energetics. This total approach to healing often involves psychotherapies and cognitive therapies. In other words many thousand years ago during Matriarchy our healing techniques were very integrated, inclusive and worked with the assumption (knowledge) that the "whole" person within the "whole" (context of Cosmic Mother Earth or modern sustainability whole systems) requires treatment and rebalance rather than isolating and understanding one constitutent in isolation as traditional science does - also assuming (now known incorrectly) that the ego is superior and contains all and controls all. The brain is simply a data processing center. Our intelligence is complete and interconnected. This is why when humans create computers and machines based on their brain computational logic - they are creating (initially) a left brain extension of reality. I say initially because ultimately as we see with AI the computer doesn't "know" boundaries of knowledge as the human primate brain does and surpasses this restriction.

After a long soft massage I feel very relaxed and at peace. The next morning I wake up very sick and mentally disoriented. I learned that my psyche did not "agree" with this comfortable warm feeling, that I am not worthy of such comfort. My early childhood was clearly the problem. Today I believe I will lose 10 years of my life because of the pain caused by not being touched. I love the touch that makes me ill. Addictions anyone?

Once I went to the Doctor with an itch that wouldn't go away unless I put ice on it. No physical reasons could be found for the itch.. He finally asked me a strange question: He asked if I had any goals or things in my life that haven't happened yet ? I was at the time physically injured and unable to train for the Olympics which was an important goal to me. Once in a while , every few years during times when I am making important decisions, the itch will return.

    • @RM-cw1ix
      @RM-cw1ix 4 года назад +1

❤️ You should do it. The Olympics has no age limit, only your mind does. Just start training and go for it. Sometimes, all we need is to "strive" for something, regardless of the outcome. That striving for a goal is what gives us that sense of completion, achievement, and joy. So go for it. ❤️
Once you do, you may satisfy or modify your perspective and surprise yourself about what you want next in life. Either way.... That itch may finally stop coming back.

I was in the hospital with perforated bowel for 5 months. I was getting a horrible itch from one of the medications, I forgot which, they had me on antibiotics for so long because of the sepsis and peritonitis, and I know that kills gut bacteria, and I had to be on benadryl for the itching. But that's all a sing of gut dysbiosis. I'm sure also my loss of mobility, I had to relearn to walk and after a year I'm off the walker and canes, but I still feel like I'm falling forward.

Have had fear paralysis withdrawal most of my life. I had become associated (feel my body/ feel touch) over the last decade but I still keep withdrawing out of habit. Ifu means aware while ra is the short form of Ara which means skin. Ifura means awareness of the skin and other means of perception is the Great Might of the Enlightened or Elderly. Elderly not in terms of Age alone but also based on life experiences. A young person might be considered an Agba because life has thought the person so much.

Just a thought on the disembodiment part - when you separate yourself from the body, which includes the skin, the job that you just described is performed by the skin, that ability also separates. Reason being, its this separated entity which supports the skin to behave so intelligently. That intelligence is different from the body. Skin by itself, without this entity, cannot display any of the characteristics you described. Same applies for all the senses. However, as long as we are destined to stay within our skin, some expressions of our minds continues to display because of the close contact.

Well skin is the largest single human organ as well. This our first line of defense against bacteria and viruses. So it's good not to act against it and to take good care of it. People who have burnt majority of their skin are unable to survive, even if their vital organs such as the brain are intact . It's too much of the shock for the rest of the human body to get in touch with our environment without enough protection from the skin. It's good to be aware of it.
