Cool mini lesson. Pour melted clay on a board.....nice.

I own at least 70 how-to DVDs from SWSCA, and I will say that Don is, by far, the most passionate instructor I have seen yet. Don exudes a true and unique desire to help us succeed. It is sincere and heartfelt.
I agree he is amazing.
Don. WOW what PASSION YOU HAVE. I wish all teacher's were like you. Keep spreading the love love.
I love the passion that you demonstrate for this medium and for the course. It really shows how much you love what you do.
Thanks for the input and the kind words, sickphyschotic. And please keep the course ideas coming! It's this kind of community-involvement that has made Stan Winston School possible. Long live practical effects! Matt
I just ordered some oil clay this morning! Thank you so much for these videos yay
Such a pleasant and passionate guy, must've been a fantastic class!
not the best jacket to wear while spreading liquid clay, Mmkay?
Hey Christopher, We agree. Don's a captivating teacher as well as a brilliant artist. We won't be reposting the LIVE Q&A from last weekend, unfortunately. But we're glad you were able to join us! -Matt
Don is an inspiring human being.
hey Don you got a very calm and passionate way of talking
looks fascinating! What can you do with the end product? Will this be a hardened relief that can be painted or work of art than can be sold? I have used oil based clay in the past to create the model for poured molds. Thanks.
I love your enthusiasm, so many times you listen to an instructor and you can almost feel their animosity at having to teach someone.
do you plan on running this again ? if so when? thanks
I learned so many things from you and thank you
Do you not use a crock pot for heating clay?
Don Lanning. His enthusiasm is infectious. Are you going to post that live webcast Q&A you did, with him?
I was glad to join you, too. I'm only sorry I can't pony up for the classes. You guys have been teaching me a lot, though. Thank you for being here.
@Andrew B!
Yes. Chavant is oil-based and yes, you can. Watch the mini lesson for free here and do what Don does! That's how it works, brother! - John
Great idea....I have something simular....freaks my grandson out...🤣🤣
Really wished I was able to afford to take these classes and learn from the best truly amazing work guys, keep it up hopefully one day I'll be able to take a class or two.
Great lesson!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks Sandra Davis. - David
I think a character sculpture/paint class would be really awesome! Just my two cents. I love this channel, and the SWSCA website. Thanks for all that you guys do for the effects community!
My OCD is kicking seeing the clay on the sleeve of his jacket. Great video!!!
Great tutorial, thanks.
Cool, thanks for the teaching 😃
Our pleasure. If you have any other questions, please let us know. And be sure to check out our website to browse our entire tutorial library from the masters of monster making and special effects. (Links in the video description above). Thanks, Matt
Hello!
how can know when will be the next course?, i'm really interested!
I'm late to the party! I've actually started using monster clay. Would it also be suitable to get a little toaster oven for melting and keeping the clay soft and warm whilst i'm working? Thank you!
Thanks! Good lesson!
i do appreciate for the demo, keep it up
Great teacher.
ImClayMara, The course cost doesn't include materials, but fortunately all you need is clay, a flat wooden board to spread it across & a few simple sculpting tools.
If you can't get your hands on Chavant clay locally, you can order it through our site by clicking on the Materials link in the video description above.
We hope you can join us! The 8-Week Course starts THIS Saturday.
-Matt
ps No face to face classes yet. Our main push is ONLINE.
Is this something i could take if i have never worked with clay before? i just want to learn
i've been doing digital art and sculpting for years. i'd love to sink my teeth into this. very cool.
Oh I already have several of the DVD lessons at home and plan to buy more soon.... :)
Awesome video, thank you very muich :) x
sickphyschotic, You will be missed! Don't worry though, many more LIVE Online Courses are on the way. What sort of class would YOU like to see us put together? -Matt
I love Don Lanning! Don Lanning just makes me happy! I feel better for having watched and listened to him! I wish it were his voice in my head instead of the nasty, critical voice I have in my head that's always so negative. He's healing! He's the sculpter and I am the clay, a big fat stupid lump of clay that's been microwaved :(
Very good lesson,keep doing it.
I have one question?
Do You made the video about woman body sculpture?
Hey Christopher, You've been a member of the community for a while and we totally appreciate your support. There'll be plenty of opportunities to connect LIVE with us again even if you can't take the course. Not to worry. - Matt
He makes us happy too Jerry. (By the way, we noticed you caught our little stream test today. Not meant for the fans, just making sure everything's perfect for Don's first live lesson on Saturday.) - David
been using chavant medium for decades. small tip, get one of those electric heating pads from the drug store, wrap your clay and put it in a soft cooler bag..It sits at your elbow and never gets to hot or cold.
I love how he said M'Kay after every sentence. I felt like I was getting a lesson from Mr. Mackey. lol
OK thank you for the quick reply!
MAY the 4th BE with YOU

Hello, I just wondered if it's ok to use a toaster (like the one in the video) for cooking food in after it's been used for heating Chavant clay, or should it be strictly used for clay and nothing else? Thanks!
great teacher...
We sure think so, Michael R, but thanks for the feedback. - David
Man, I really wish I could do this class. I'll be taking tests when it starts though :(
Don lanning course is he still doing courses somewhere .
Your work is amazing
Thanks. - David
Cool love it.
I hope he does another one.
I know, and thank you for acknowledging that. As time goes by and my own film making career continues to gain momentum (look for Live Forever: The Ray Bradbury Odyssey) I know I'll be able to participate more and more.
Hey, I just came across your video and its pretty interesting. What kind of clay is that?
Hi! It's Chavant Clay NSP Medium. - Balázs
this is the coolest stuff!!!
I will go ahead and like this video. mkey
super baddass don, u make a difference dude!
I used those black picture racks he showed to hold face casts weighing up to 10, 12 lbs each, just so they looked better being stored on the shelves, and so I could easily see which one I needed
will this lesson work with natural air drying clay?
To some extent you could practice the techniques, but not really, no. Chavant NSP is a special mineral oil clay which never hardens so your work drying out during or between sessions is not an issue. The end work can be moulded in Silicon rubber then cast back into resin though!
The current live course is already underway. 8-weeks, every Saturday. But Don's video tutorials are available from the website. And Don is going to be offering an in-person (not via web) class coming up. Check his website for details. - David
hi sir ! I think u know the right Technique making oil based clay. so plz u make a video on it .
Lesson I've learn -How to melt clay and spread it like sht in a rectangular board in 15 minutes.
Haha! Wasted my time as well.
If that's your take away from this invitation to learn from a master like Don Lanning then I feel sorry for you, he is an amazing artist, this was just to prep students for class. I suggest being more open minded an absorb and appreciate any free information the masters are willing to offer, you'll be better for it.
@@Ibaneddie76 The deal is it's advertised as a lesson, but that's not what it actually is, it's a preperation for his students, which is fine, but that's not what the title says :)
I love Don
cx Hello. I am only 13 but I hope to me a SFX Cosmetologist when I grow older. Your Videos are nice to watch, to give me a feel on what College will be like.
Zoe Lilly great to hear that! Keep working to pursue your dreams and share your art and artistry with us on our Facebook wall! Good luck! -Maggie
Thank you so much cx for right now I ust draw in my sketch book but I will try to share it with you :)
I Love your Jacket.. and the Video is Awesome, thank you for the Lessons :-)
geat lesson mr mackey,mkay?
Im doing the same but is my clay board cracking when it dries??
Barbara, Don is a tremendous teacher. If you want to interact with him live online and learn a ton of new techniques, visit our Website to check out his upcoming 4-week webinar, starting on Saturday 10/26. Just go to stanwinstonschool(DOT)com and click on the WEBINARS tab in the navigation bar. -Matt
We do too! -Matt
Happy to hear it, Jason Y. Way better than scrubbing toilets! ;) -Matt
Hey Jenny-Li, Unfortunately we're not familiar with any Makeup FX Schools in Sweden. But have no fear, our Live Webinars allow you to interact with our instructors from wherever you are in the world. Please check out our website and see what we have to offer. Links in the video description above. -Matt
how did you do that.
All good points, vjartafjal. Plus the clay will gum up your microwave. Best to make a simple clay oven w/tin foil and a light bulb. - David
Jason Y, We're flattered. :)
But to start learning from the Legends of FX, without having to clean our toilets, just enroll in this 8-Week LIVE online course or become an SWSCA subscriber by visiting the Stan Winston School website. -Matt
You're the man Don! -Kendra S.
Is there any live webcast style online courses to take with Don or any other special effects artists for International students?
Of course! Our school is online so you can join us from anywhere: bit.ly/SWSCAhomeYT - Balázs
@@StanWinstonSchool Hi, just to confirm I am already part of the school, I am making reference to any live online courses (not prerecorded) which I understand Don was part of. Have you any live online courses by Don or any other Special Effects Artists?
You are so much more better than the otherone I did
Well, thanks Octaviano Barrera. What was the "otherone" if you don't mind me asking? - David
I love this guy. Drinking game- swig whenever he says "go ahead" or "okay" ;) good luck!
Hi great take on clay. I am in South Africa.....what clay type is this
Marian Edwards Don is using Chavant Clay - NSP Medium. It's an oil based clay. An entire list of the materials used in this lesson is available here: bit.ly/1kTbLjw. -Maggie
me too!!
I'm guessing here, but the microwave may destroy the long fatty acid chains in the plasticine, altering the structure and thus the properties the clay has. The infrared radiation is far less destructive than the microwave radiation to the molecules.
Also, you can't really regulate heat in a microwave.
Thanks for this cool, inspiring preview. You sirs have the best jobs in the world.
Of course Don! :)
What is the purpose of a clay board? I've been working on teaching myself as much as I can until my husband and I get stationed somewhere that has a proper school, but I've never seen this sort of thing before.
it's good for the clay to have something on the back to stick on , because when you work on things like he does is like drawing on a canvas (but you will be sculpting instead) , also the clay gets stuck on the wood and it's easier to work while your board is standing without cracking or worse having all the sculpture fall down on the floor , i tried a few difrent boards to work with and the clay doesn't stuck that well as it does on wood unless you add something extra to hold it which is a lot of trouble.
Good info
can you melt oil based sculpting clay in a toaster over?
This video has convinced me. I need to stop stalling and begin. While I am familiar with Lanning's work, and he seems from this video to be an excellent instructor, would this dvd be a good start for someone who has absolutely no experience in sculpting? I may not have the experience, but I have the passion and desire to learn this.
Yes, TheGorknMork, this is an excellent place to begin. - David
Stan Winston School Thanks for the reply! DVD is ordered!
Please, TheGorknMork, let us know what you think. - David
Stan Winston School Will do! I'm sure it'll be great!
what type of clay are you using?
This is Chavant medium. - David
We're an online school. Look for us online. The website is the school name. - David
Likely the clay would gum up your toaster. Best to keep separate toasters for clay warming and actual cooking. Though the clay certainly won't kill you. - David
I actually just finished a creature design workshop that totally blew my cash. Otherwise I would sign up for this in a heartbeat. Wish I had known about this further in advance :/
'mmkay'
We're is this school??
This is a medium Chavant modeling clay. - David
i am from germany same thing here :( if i could afford those 8 weeks in the US i would take the class X(
Why are we using a clayboard? Why is it needed? Can't I use a kitchen counter top or wax paper? Even if its a preference I would like to hear that. Being a novice these small details are not as apparent to me. Thanks I enjoy watching Don.
hey whats the material your using?
also its great that your active throughout the video
nvm got it, still awesome how your teaching stuff
I wish I could find a similar class in Sweden. Any one who happens to know a person over here? no?
What a nice flat clay
