The actual real-life Italian mafia sometimes hosts illegal golf tournaments where they bet hundreds of thousands of Euro and obviously don't pay taxes, they also dominate the illegal car racing scene so idk why a tennis tournament sounds funny to you. In my opinion Junko's by far the most ridiculous thing about Danganronpa.
@@hahmann because tennis isn't the kind of racket (pun intended) people think of when they think of the mafia or one you'd expect to need to be underground, thus making it sound random AF. Extended summery: they then say that bad ppl and good ppl should live together with ppl being sad but happy, this entire story is like losing your arm and getting a new one cuz like you miss ur old mar but now u have a cool metal one like in the winter solider.
Quick addition: Celeste was not only killed in the burning of the witch, Monokuma knew that she wanted to be unique and special, so he made her burn. That's why she was happy, she was being burned-- which is a very unique death nowadays-- in a gothic city. But, because Monokuma was evil, he made her get run over by a firetruck at the end. Getting run over by a vehicle is a very common death, so Celeste was filled with despair for her last moments.

I’m sorry but Junkos backstory makes so much sense to me because there’s so many real life examples of people committing horrible crimes out of “boredom” or “just to know what it feels like”
It is actually quite a rarity, as most crimes have very distinct underlying motives. However, those who have committed these crimes simply out of boredom do exist, and they are some of the scariest sociopaths to ever walk the planet.
An example of this came out recently. A girl from South Korea murdered someone ''Just to see what it was like'' since she loved watching true crime docus.
Yeah it's a true thing, and I think everyone has wanted to at least once, with a small amount actually doing it, so Junko's motivation is realistic in that sense
It's more about the idea of "The smartest people in the world would only find the most unpredictable things as entertaining" and her whole character is that she can predict many steps ahead and felt that despair is the only unpredictable thing in life. The story is her trying to show the world and Hajime that.
if you're ever upset over having no friends simply remember that 90% of the characters in this game's backstory includes "they didn't have a single friend"
I mean if you think about it it makes sense, since they don’t have friends to hang out with to fill there free time they have to fill their free time in other ways, such as pouring everything they have into their passion to become the best at it.
I think the Danganronpa apocalypse is especially disturbing. No nukes or zombies or environmental catastrophe. Just pure human nature and mass psychosis
@@zirus5191 but most of the people she brainwashed died at the very beginning of the tragedy like the original comment said most of the tragedy was human nature

You know how when you get into a new fandom, you start seeing it everywhere? I just got into Danganronpa about a month ago, because I suddenly remembered seeing a certain half and half bear mascot, and wondered which anime it came from. Little did I know there was a whole rabbit hole awaiting
same, in pretty much every fandom ive been in it all started with "oh yeah, i remember seeing this once. wonder what it's like now/what it actually is"
Kodaka actually wrote every character so that they could have their own stories and be the protagonists of their own games. _"When I write my stories, my main goal is to keep myself interested, and write the kind of game and story, and characters, and scenario that I would be entertained by."_ I just now realize after pasting that quote that it's not necessarily about characters but it still fits so im keeping it muahaha
What surprised me was how long the entire video was. Like, 3 hours, for me, wasn’t really enough but holy hell this guy clearly explained the whole series.
In Russia, there's a proverb about that, actually. "Сапожник без сапог" - which can be translated as "Shoemaker without shoes". It's describes an often happening situation, when an expert in something usually lacking in that certain something he gives to other. Like a guy who gives the best dating advices is actually single. Surgeon that can't make surgery upon himself. Therapist that still needs therapy... well, or just poor shoemaker, who don't have time or money to make\buy himself a pair of shoes.))) Pretty good proverb, isn't it?
@@dan_man3087 That doesn't make sense, as everyone needed, yet didn't get, therapy, not just the therapist. She was either a bad Ultimate Therapist, or they were all beyond therapy.

Personally I think the best talent is makoto's luck, because it seems based on survival, in the killing game he was in, so many odd things happened that allowed them to continue, like having a busted door for the bathroom which helped bust leon, makoto also survived a execution that kirigiri didnt. He survived a fall that most definitely should have killed him, in fact I think his luck that got him into Hope's peak because it was the only way to survive with what Junko was gonna do
I feel like she didnt necessarily be less lucky but he was so unlucky it out weighed all luck around him Making every situation unpredictable making hope less predictable than despair hence him being the ultimate hope
Jokes aside, its pretty common for prodigies to have very chaotic backgrounds since they are never completely "normal". And you can't become the very best at anything without having to sacrifice a lot in the way.
Makoto’s backstory involving his receiving his letter of acceptance as the ultimate lucky student is just hilarious. Further adds on to why he’s my favorite character, I can’t help but relate to this klutz
In conclusion Junko is actually one of the most amazingly written characters ever and even if her plans failed she’ll always win in the end cuz that’s literally what she wants
I love how in this incredibly comprehensive and detailed video about Danganronpa's lore, you literally never mentioned the Monokubs even once. I don't even mind them all that much, but it really does go to show just how unnecessary their inclusion was.
I remember starting out the anime , monokuma was such a mystery , after despair arc we all understood it was junko who was the antagonist of the series and monokuma was legit just a robot teddy
Their only purpose was to show off how desperate the in-universe Danganronpa reality show was becoming by continuing to add unnecessary additions in an attempt to stay relevant.
I'm glad this video went over Danganronpa Gaiden: Killer Killer and Ultra Despair Hagakure, as those were 2 pieces of Danganronpa material I knew absolutely nothing about, despite having heard of them
@@izuvincee8495 she's still a love interest, and as it stated in the video it is not said whether leon returns those feelings or not. Either way, cousinly love really shouldn't be a casual romantic subplot.
Legit the only thing I hate about Danganronpa was the fact that Makoto reopened Hope's Peak Academy at the end. Like... did he damn learn NOTHING from everything that happened??? What was the point of re-establishing the exact hierarchy Junko took advantage of? As if everyone is gonna be fine with the elite turning their nose up at the "untalented" again 🙄
The fact that each character has such deeply enriching backstories just clues you in on how much dedication is poured into creating them, it's beautiful.
Even with knowing about Mikans past before this video, actually hearing it be told hurt me so much. She, and all the rest of her classmates, deserved better than what was dealt to them prior to Hopes Peak
Fr and no matter how others could out smart her she always knew what was going to happen... Danganronpa is easily one of the best anime to game series to comics story ever made
@Itz Riyaaaaa I like your comment. and strongly dislike the original comment, saying all the events in DGR are caused just because of Junko, and her boredom, just sounds so dumb and makes the plot sound very basic and all tho it obviously isn't perfect. it has a lot more to it, plot wise and character wise. like the foundation of Hopes Peak and the 4 men steering it from the shadows.
Makoto's background was so weird I am laughing my ass off. Like wow he isn't the ultimate lucky student because he is fortunate, he is the ultimate lucky student because he is the Qrow of Danganronpa.
The V3 backstories seems to be absurd to me compared to the original members of the Danganronpa but upon realizing that being the 53 seasons you will run out of ideas and you will try to "stay original" in the end it turned into something that doesn't feel like it is from the same series (I feel that the original people made up these stories it sounds a bit fanfic-y to me)
Well, I don't really like V3, but isn't it exactly the point? All of them are "characters" and made to please the people watching. They were meant to stand out.
Most of the backstories of the third game were definitely unrealistic and weaker, and I'm glad that the twist in the end explained why that was the case. The boring maid girl being a secret service agent/co prime minister for Japanese Donald Trump had me questioning things.
I’m gunna be honest I loved v3 and I did think some of the characters were done very well but I a So just found out it was a “reality tv show based off the game” I don’t like that. My original thought was that it was years later way after the tragedy and the world was going ok but the ultimate cosplayer found stuff about junko and the tragedy, got obsessed with her and worked hard to continue it lol. I know that has a lot of flaws in it now that I think about it but that was my base thought I can’t believe I missed it being a reality tv show I must have just confused it with like the whole “being broadcasted to the world” thing.
Wait a sec, I noticed a pretty big error in here: Hajime distinctly mentions that "hope" is not the cause he fights for and not the route he chooses to walk on. He pretty much says outright, that both "hope" and "despair" are garbage and that he chooses a third path--> To make his own future independent of those concepts.

Geez... for me the most disturbing part of the entire series has to be the lobotomy of Chisa... It literally made me feel sick to my stomach and I can't watch that scene whenever I rewatch the series.
I can handle that scene, but the student council killing game nearly broke me. I can’t mentally withstand watching that scene and have to skip it everytime. Even thinking about it makes me uneasy. The English voice acting is so well done that it gives me a visceral reaction that no other media like that can. My favorite series is a battle manga full of gruesome deaths but dear god the addition of the voice acting is incredibly powerful as a scene
Imagine being that girl that was originally the lucky student. “Hey so you WERE gong to be accepted to this school, but a thief exploded a motorcycle thanks to a can that a boy dropped onto the road and it was burned so now we gave your spot to the boy that accidentally destroyed the motorcycle, likely killed a man and burned your letter ☺️”
think you missed the point there, they saw the letter being burned as an unlucky incident and decided to reconsider her acceptance as the Ultimate Lucky Student, so they re-held the lottery. The second time, the winner happened to be Makoto.
A few years later: "turns out going there would have got you caught up in a horrible place, but you would have at least lived until the killing game but it might be safer in there and also the kid who replaced you did live and become the Ultimate Hope."
My theory on V3 is it's an alternate reality where Ryota Mitarai succeeded in airing the hope brain washing video. Thus the events of Hope's Peak and the tragedy were believed to be mere fiction. The people being brainwashed by hope quickly grow bored as there's no struggle that doesn't diminish there hope. So they revive the despair based "fiction" Danganronpa in the form of a reality show. This would also explain the audience always choosing hope in their votes, until the very end when the hope brainwashing finally starts to fade.
@@jotarokujo4727 I would assume so if this theory is ever proven true. Though to be fair I don't even give my own theories too much credit as there's little evidence for it. I just thought it was an interesting idea.
I'm so glad you took the time to explain everything, after Ultra Despair Girls, I was starting to get confused 😂😂😂 I desperately NEEDED to know why Nagito Komaeda was the servant to a bunch of kids all of a sudden.
I believe it was after he became a Remnant of Despair and took Junko's arm after Trigger Happy Havoc. After Komaru meets him, you can see one of the hands covered with a glove. That is Junko's. I think the reason he became a servant in UDG was the Warriors of Hope planned to kill him due to him being an adult, but decide to spare him. Even as a Remnant, his luck saved him.
@@Speedstreak actually his main reason is to help Monaca to make Komaru (sister of Makoto who is now known as the ultimate hope and he's kind of salty about it) as Junko's sucessor, remembering he's a remnant of despair, Nagito believes that the bigger despair that's happening the bigger hope will shine later, though in reality he's just wants to see the real despair. That's why in the ending he's dissapointed (since Komaru didn't choose either hope or despair) and decided to make Monaca as the successor instead, but because of his way of thinking Monaca became bored of despair and hope so she decided to go to the moon instead.
facts that I have learned abt mainly just DR V3 from comments: - Angie started a cult to try and save everyone - Junko started the killing game to show her love for her class - Korekiyo was gr00m€d and s€xu@lly assaulted and more by his own sister, and yet he still wanted to be with her - Kokichi framed Gonta trying to save him and everyone else from the killing game - Kaede died thinking she killed Rantaro - Kaito wanted to get to space as quickly as he could because he knew he was dying - Akane was abused, s€xu@lly @ss@ult€d, and witnessed murder during her childhood
what if nagito got lucky that he recovers from his lymphoma and dementia but the consequences is that The Biggest, Most Awful, Most Tragic Event in Human History will happen?
it could have gave way for dr3, because I didn't like how it was an alternate universe "lol izza prank it's just tv" since I felt like the characters were wasted opportunity...
dementia probably got cured by the neoworld project which restored class 77's memories most likely, not sure how his lymphoma was cured, but yeah unintentionally fulfilling his hope after the despair of the biggest...something something... tragedy edit: could've unintentionally have been junko's hand donating the necessary immuno-respone to cure his lymphoma, but all of this to say it's a stretch on scientific terms and a factor into Nagito's pendulum of hope/despair
No matter what, Trigger Happy Havoc will always make me the saddest. Those who die will never know about The Tragedy along with their school year and their loved ones. It just makes me sad to think about it tbh.
what really kills me is that Hifumi remembered. he remembered when Celeste knocked him over the head, and he really tried to tell the others about all of it, but he was already dying and only had enough time to say her real name. I can't even imagine how agonizing that must've felt in his final moments

@@jotarokujo4727 thank you, I totally forgot about that. I still assume that most of what was done was committing by the remnants since we never actually get any true insights into the other “Ultimate Despairs” or allusion to their actual identities and it seems kinda boring to attribute those actions to random others that just all killed themselves after Junko died. Plus, it’s canon that Junko made the 77th class more “like her” than she did with anyone else. They got the Despair Junko Brainwashing vs the regular brainwashing she did to the masses in general and the Remnants were the tool she used to spread despair so it makes sense they’d be the ones slaughtering people in the streets or starving themselves (Akane specifically) or mutilating their bodies to put her body on them (Fuyuhiko, Nagito, and Mikan). The other stuff like sacrificing their parents (which I would say makes sense for Sonia or Teruteru) or defiling her corpse could be attributed to the other Ultimates that were out there.

This game as weird as it is means a lot to me.
I think the one thing that should be clarified is that v3 is *incredibly* vague about whether Tsumugi was lying or not, it heavily alludes to the idea that the whole "danganronpa is a popular tv show and we're all fictional characters in it" might be her lie. It asks you specifically to return back to the beginning of the game to confirm what she says, yet when you actually do that, nothing actually proves her point. The flashback she gives you and the actual event dont match up, because the students have no idea who the monokubs are and are genuinely scared upon seeing them, whereas her claim is that they all signed up for it and thus knew beforehand what it all meant. Kodaka himself has said this was entirely intentionally kept vague, and it's up to the player to decide what the truth of the situation is

Now knowing about Yasuhiro's little side adventures during Despair Girls I am really starting to question whether he is an ultimate clairvoyant or just another ultimate lucky student that made a few good guesses.
Slight Correction: Kokichi didn't just hate that fact he was forced to play, he hated the idea of murder all together. The entire purpose of his plan was to stop any deaths that would come after Chapter 4, not just to pull one over the mastermind.
@@softsylvie5770 That's why his character is a tragic and confusing one. He gave up everything in order to paint himself as the mastermind and to end the killing game, including his morals. Also, where's the "severe guilt" coming from Kokichi after Gonta's death? He again knew it would happen but went along with it anyways instead of taking matters into his own hands and leaving the simulation/not meet up with Miu?
My word, some of the danganronpa V3 character backstories are so ridiculous it’s a surprise that it was a surprise that this wasn’t actually canon in the timeline. Like seriously we have a maid being such a good maid that she became the prime minister of Japan, a tennis player who had his entire family killed by the mafia except he then killed the entire mafia because he was so good at tennis, and an entomologist who was raised by reptilian dinosaurs that went into hiding and are a complete secret to all of humanity except this one guy apparently. The other backstories are crazy too but those three are so absurd that they should’ve made the twist ending obvious.
To be fair, none of those things are that outlandish when you factor in that 15 highschool students were enough to pretty much cause the end of the world.
Pretty sure a good few of those were meant to me hyperbolic statements by the students that were at least partially fake. They were trying to intimidate each other with whatever info they let slip after all But either way yea, it could technically be canon to the other stuff but their back stories were all written for them without actually happening probably

That could be the case for Kaede's twin sister, but it could also be a way Tsumugi could make Shuichi suspect someone else, not to be found out straight away as the mastermind, and also reference the events in the original DR.

Despair Arc in general gets obscenely dark pretty fast.
Sounds like something that’d happen in a smash trailer
A few years later: "turns out going there would have got you caught up in a horrible place, but you would have at least lived until the killing game but it might be safer in there and also the kid who replaced you did live and become the Ultimate Hope."
@@UnuUO as fair as that is, i think hope's peak should have been more, not less, interested in studying her after that lol
That girl went on to dodge a lot of bullets
My theory on V3 is it's an alternate reality where Ryota Mitarai succeeded in airing the hope brain washing video. Thus the events of Hope's Peak and the tragedy were believed to be mere fiction. The people being brainwashed by hope quickly grow bored as there's no struggle that doesn't diminish there hope. So they revive the despair based "fiction" Danganronpa in the form of a reality show. This would also explain the audience always choosing hope in their votes, until the very end when the hope brainwashing finally starts to fade.
So that means that all the main cast of Hope's Peak saga is dead?including Hajime?

@@Speedstreak Oh, thank you very much for explaining 😁😁😁
@@keyonalyles2267 You're very welcome! 😁👍
That's why in the ending he's dissapointed (since Komaru didn't choose either hope or despair) and decided to make Monaca as the successor instead, but because of his way of thinking Monaca became bored of despair and hope so she decided to go to the moon instead.

what if nagito got lucky that he recovers from his lymphoma and dementia but the consequences is that The Biggest, Most Awful, Most Tragic Event in Human History will happen?
That is a really good theory, and by good I mean phenomenal. Because it makes so much sense.
it could have gave way for dr3, because I didn't like how it was an alternate universe "lol izza prank it's just tv" since I felt like the characters were wasted opportunity...
dementia probably got cured by the neoworld project which restored class 77's memories most likely, not sure how his lymphoma was cured, but yeah unintentionally fulfilling his hope after the despair of the biggest...something something... tragedy
edit: could've unintentionally have been junko's hand donating the necessary immuno-respone to cure his lymphoma, but all of this to say it's a stretch on scientific terms and a factor into Nagito's pendulum of hope/despair
Interesting how you skirted around the fact that several members of Class 77 committed necrophilic acts on Junko's corpse
One ultimate despair did, we don't know who or if they were from 77
Good grief how did I forget about that
@@mrminecraftcubeable the Ultimate despairs are only people in that class and the second game specifically confirms that one of them did commit those acts. The only canonical ultimate despairs are Junko, Mukuro, Hajime/Izuru and the fourteen members from class 77-B.
Mikan seems to be the one who stole the womb, Peko, Neko, and Fuyuhiko seem to be the ones who killed people in the streets, Akane was the one who starved herself, Sonia more than likely destroyed her country while Imposter probably went around impersonality important figures so they both contributed to wars and mayhem , Teruteru probably killed his mother, Soda created giant machines and probably also contributed to the dead people on the streets, Mahiru, Ibuki, and Hiyoko probably used their talents to draw more and more people towards despair (mahirus pictures making the events to big to ignore, Ibuki and Hiyokos concerts brainwashing people at large), Gundam unleashed his beasts into the streets, and Nagito went off somewhere with the Warriors of Hope.
That said there’s probably plenty of overlap like Akane probably ALSO killed people in the streets, Soda and Teruteru could have been the ones to defile Junko’s corpse, Sonia probably murdered her own parents, etc.
@@mkwhite5054 Class 77 are only the 14 surviving members of Ultimate Despair the other members all commited suicide after Junko's death and Izuru was a member only by name he was just a spectator in the first killing game and during the whole tragedy, the only bad thing he did was installing AI Junko in the Neo world program because he wanted it to be the final battle between hope and despair, and because he wanted to avenge Chiaki by ruining Junko's plans

Kodaka himself has said this was entirely intentionally kept vague, and it's up to the player to decide what the truth of the situation is
Conclusion: "We want to have the option to make a 4th game so we'll intentionally make the final open."
I'm not mad I just feel betrayed ;_;

The entire purpose of his plan was to stop any deaths that would come after Chapter 4, not just to pull one over the mastermind.
but if he hated the idea of murder, why did he gladly cause the death of 3 different students?
@@softsylvie5770 That's why his character is a tragic and confusing one. He gave up everything in order to paint himself as the mastermind and to end the killing game, including his morals. Also Kokichi wasn't involved with three deaths. Kaito died because of his illness which was Maki's fault since the poison she used made his illness much more worse.
@@softsylvie5770 And he didn't gladly do it. During Chapter 4 he expresses severe guilt over Gonta's death and is angry at Miu for trying to kill him and forcing his hand. (It's why he insults her so much after her death.)
He's still wrong, though
@@blehblblehbl7535 Well, he also gave up everything to a plan which he probably knew would drive the remaining students to rot in their dorms/commit suicide.
And Kokichi was very well involved with 3 deaths. Just because he didn't poison Kaito doesnt mean he didn't literally convince Kaito to go through with a plan that would lead to his inevitable execution.
They were trying to intimidate each other with whatever info they let slip after all
But either way yea, it could technically be canon to the other stuff but their back stories were all written for them without actually happening probably
@@pedroportela6476 nah not completely. 17 students, at least 2 of them in positions of power already, and Junko having plans that spanned many years where she’s wormed her way into various businesses and deals, from the 5 kids in the spinoff (with Monaca giving an entire businesses and manufacturing support) to the most prestigious yet shady school system in Japan. That could be the case for Kaede's twin sister, but it could also be a way Tsumugi could make Shuichi suspect someone else, not to be found out straight away as the mastermind, and also reference the events in the original DR.
