I saw it when it came out in theaters (I'll never forget because my cousin and I dropped our bucket of popcorn on the floor), and it's one of the forgotten and very underrated classics of the 80's. I don't want a remake. I want a sequel. Maybe one where Max returned to Earth to seek help from David who is now all grown up. He has a kid that thinks his dad is just old and boring. He's hid this crazy adventure that he had as a kid from everyone but his brother. Anyway, Max and David go off and get into trouble and Jr. has to rescue them...along with Max Jr. I'd watch that movie.
Yeah a proper sequel would be cool I dont want it to just all be on earth though thats just not all that sci fi'sh too me I'd like to see them actually go to other galaxies or something.
I think Max Jr is pushing it, but think about it they already left it open for a sequel, the little three toe thing I can't remember what he named it, Keep the idea that max comes back and needs David's help, but help with the reconstruction of the home planet that was destroyed and the little guy has some vital genetic make up or something that is needed for the last stages. Or maybe David is in hospital because his brain can't handle the download stuff anymore but his kid can and he goes with him, that would take you out in to the universe into max's worlds and maybe even meet the architects. or something I dunno. But I am in the same boat, if I saw flight of the navigator 2 in cinema i'd be paying full price to see it. I am not totally convinced the majority of directors could handle this sort of movie though. There is a different way of seeing the world now a days. Especially in sci fi. all the big ones are just copies of something else now. Hence why they keep trying to remake this, then quitting again when something better comes along. Yep- I'm 37. One of my Mom's friends gave me a VHS tape that she recorded Labyrinth, Teen Wolf, & Flight of the Navigator on & I wore that damn tape out! I love those three movies SO much.
Not only is the film amazing but so is that soundtrack. Perfection through and through and to me its all as nostalgic as back to the future. The songs and the film takes me back to my childhood.
This ship, the way it moved, the way it changed, went invisible...omg those steps! As a kid I remember watching that and just going, how do they do that, HOW do they do that! It has to be real alien technology 😮
Hollywood has ran out of ideas for new movies and are unwilling to risk financing any scripts that could in their eyes flop. So they reboot and remake old movies cashing in on nostalgia in hopes of raking in the cash, which sometimes does work but more often fails due to too many changes to fit current time such as changing the sex or race if a character.
I like the score. I actually have The Robot Romp (the music that plays when David is in the RALPH robot on the way to the hangar) on a playlist on my phone. But it was designed to be contemporary... the cutting edge of what the 1980s had to offer-especially to contrast with the 1970s-rather than a timeless space opera scored by Jerry Goldsmith, James Horner, John Williams, or Johann Strauss for that matter.
Same. I watched this when I was 6 same year it came out. Towards the end you get a feeling something bad is going to happen but, I think I remember I didn't want him to go home.
This is one of those rare GOOD live Action Disney movies. These days kids movies are all food fights and farts and people acting dumber then they should, doing some thing impossible and / or people telegraphing there jokes making the punchline to predictable and then explaining the joke which kills the mood for me. Nick AND Disney both do this and then they force in pop stars, pop culture, dances and modern pop band song covers of 60s music kids wrongly assume where created recently and also some times a round or too of "All Star". I don't know why Return to Oz failed it was great. But then I love kids movies where no one fart and no one quotes popular game shows. I did get to see the prop ship at Disney World if there is a remake I want to see an 80s kid teleported to the 2000s. and have him be a Star Wars fan and 1st thing he does when he leaves the 80s is go see one of the new Star Wars movies. He might even have some vintage toys on him that he could sell to make money to buy things with.
10:55 With respect to SJP: Danny Trejo has been in so many movies that sometimes he just catches something on cable in the afternoon thinking, "oh hey, this looks cool," and then he sees his own face 10 minutes later. "What? I was in this movie too?" He literally cannot remember the majority of his work.
Minty I just found your channel about three weeks ago. As a 70's baby and toddler and 80's little girl I am sooooo thankful to find a kindred fellow spirit of how amazing cartoons, movies, and toys were. I had forgotten about this movie. The memories heal me with all the shit the US is going through. This brings a huge much needed smile on my face.
Despite what you say about the prop ship being degraded to being on the backlot Disney Hollywood Studio's tour... when I saw it on that tour, I got seriously excited (didn't know it was there).
A Very underrated movie. I remember seeing this on the Village Roadshow promotions on vhs for Australia in the trailers that's how I found about it in the early 90's. Now I own it in my movie library and love to watch every year or so.
@@adamdavies1068 Really that would have been a great cinematic experience I would have loved to have seen it when it first came out at the cinema but I was 5 in 1986. I discovered it at my local video store in about 1991 or 1992 and have loved it ever since.
One of my favorite movies growing up. The kind of movie I could watch and rewatch. The liquid metal entrance to the space craft was way ahead of its time.
Hey man, I like that kind of music. Synthpop is undergoing a renaissance of sorts right now. The new retrowave/synthewave/outrun genre really scratches an itch for me.
Bad remakes don't really matter. At the time they seem like the end of the world, but a few years later and history quickly forgets about them and they fade from people's memory. Only the classics are remembered.
Because popularity != quality. It is neat to see big name blockbuster movies' popularity fade while under-appreciated movies get discovered and become more loved over time.
Philip Dunne I don’t see how this movie did poorly at the box office. I seen it as a kid in the theater and I remember the theater was pretty full. I instantly loved it and it had me captivated from beginning to end
This was definitely one of my favourite movies as a kid. I don’t think a remake can live up to the blend of practical and CGI that this pulled off perfectly. Such a magical charming movie 🎥👌
Never say never, if the Jim Henson company have rights to the movie franchise and do move forward with another, of course they'll use CGI but I would wager that they would also use some pretty slick modern practical effects.
Maybe. Just maybe. The Alan Silvestri 80's score was supposed to sound that way on purpose because, maybe, just maybe; it was for a film that took place in the 80's from the point of view of a boy from the late 70's. There was even made up exaggerated 80's music in the movie made for the movie. Like the song in the Punkers' car. They were probably told to exaggerate it to make it sound "alien" as if the audience was listening to it as a culture shock too.
Also think about Australian vs American musical culture. This predates the internet so musical genres were slower to travel across the world / had more opportunity to morph and adapt. I am by far not an expert, but 80s American pop music and Australian pop probably were a bit different... but I do really like your take on it. Making the "current" music sound both familiar and different at the same time. This is probably my favorite movie growing up.
You have a lot of cool stuff from my childhood on those shelves, I actually had a lot of those toys / games myself. We really did live in magic times back then. Long live the 80s/90s. Nice vid.
@@jokerace8227 It WAS cheesy. I know some people get really put off by cheese- so maybe that is why it didn't do well. You make me wanna go back and binge a few 80s sci-fi movies. I liked them.
@@kirkjohnson9353 Was no more cheesy than loads of movies at the time, I personally think it's the fact that the character has a more adult context and yet the idea of "comic book character" at the time was a "kids thing" and it was one of those films that was hard to know who to appeal to in the limited marketing of the 80's, comic book fans complained of the cheese, yet I think most folk, young and old who watched the movie at least once thought it was a decent film, certainly compared to that days standards.
As dated as the music sounds in this movie, I appreciate its ability to make me feel like a kid again. This was one of the few that I got to see in the theater with my best friend and his Mom. I love it. To this day, every once in a while, I will run into someone who responds with, "COMPLIANCE!" when they are asked to do something. Lol.
I was very excited to see this film discussed. Can Cloak and Dagger be discussed as well? It would even be a good tribute to fellow Australians who worked on the film; director Richard Franklin, and composer Brian May (for fellow youtube comment readers out there, this is not to be confused with English guitarist Brian May).
This was my favorite live action Disney movie growing up! The Spaceship in this movie was the awesome-est Spaceship ever! I love the shape and design of it! This movie is among my favorite 80s family movies along with The Neverending Story, The Goonies, and Short Circuit! Also when I went to Walt Disney World when I was 12, I saw the Flight of The Navigator Spaceship on the Backlot tour ride and it was awesome to see! I just wonder what they've done with it since they put Star Wars Galaxies' Edge where Backlot tours used to be.
I absolutely loved the music even the score. I have caught myself multiple times listening to the start of the movie a few times before continuing the movie. The music was perfect for hte movie. It was a futuristic type of movie and the synth pop style music matched the movie.
I always thought this movie was a gem. Rarely has it been done where a kid not only travels in time but also in an alternate universe. When I was young it was a little disturbing thinking what that would be like.
Aw, the score is one of my absolute favorite things about this movie, and precisely *because* it sounds locked in a certain time period. "Robot Romp" is pure bliss for me, and I don't think it sounds like an Aerobicize video at all. (Not offended, just wanted to offer a counter opinion.)
6:47 Panasonic tape recorder, eh? Panasonic was also the name on some computer monitor closeups during the NASA brain scan scene and on the Freeman family’s television in 1986.
Funny story... When me and my brother was little, about me around 11 or 12 and my brother around 4 or 5. We loved this movie. He called it Flight of the alligator. Lol
This movie had such an impact on my childhood. I seen it in the theater in queens ny when I was 10 and it was just magical. It’s inspired my imagination and literally helped make me a better person and appreciate life so much more. That may sound cheesey but I’m not ashamed to admit it. If you have children it would be a sin to not bless them with this amazing movie
My son was 7 when we rented this movie back in Maybe 1990. I love this movie just like he did. When it came to the part where David decided to go back to the spaceship and leave his family, I turned to my son and he had tears rolling down his face. David was going to leave his family and be sad. It was a great movie I think about it often.
My father in law was the SPFX coordinator on this one. I am so glad it is such a family favorite. He's passed away now, but it is a great spot in his career.
@CareBare Hair Maybe hot was the wrong word. I should have used the term that 'Philie Spiess' used, which is more accurate. But I realize not everyone liked the way she looked, even way back then.
Story goes that when Amazing Stories was cancelled, much work had already gone into shooting Batteries Not Included. Producers didn't want to shelve or waste it, so it was rolled into a feature film.
I loved this movie! I saw it as a kid back in the 80's. I recorded it onto videotape. I now have the DVD. I liked the synthesized music. Thanks for showing the shell of the spaceship. In 1994 I was at Disneyland in LA and when we were on the tram touring the backlot I saw two of the spaceships just sitting on the ground next to each other. I can't believe they just let the beloved prop just rust away like that.
I actually saw a space ship like that fly over Newmarket, Canada when I was 9 on my BMX. Me and my buds chased it through town into the woods in broad day light. It wasn't going fast. I'll never forget that. Me and the boys still talk about it
The same Transformers Shrapnel toy is in two different shots. You first see it on the bed then in the next shot, you see it on the chair next to the television.

Dude the music fit the type of movie it was. That Mr. Roboto from Styx with the 80's tech style. I've got the scores on my playlist on my phone along with Twisted Sister, BeeGees, Beach Boys and the songs from Grease. 🤣
Thanks Minty, I love FOTN, the score, the backdrops, the story. I think Sarah Jessica Parker's character should have been the girl David had a crush on in 1978, would have made a fun little aside to his past
That's actually a really cool idea! I always figured Carol was born the same year as David, and the (none dodgy) chemistry between them adds to the tragedy at David getting on with a girl his age, but she is an adult, while he's still a kid! For her to be Jennifer would be an extra bit of poigance. Maybe adult Jennifer admits she had a crush on David back then, and she kept kept wishing he'd ask her out. Which gives him the confidence to talk to her when he goes back to 1978. Also it would mirror how David's relationship with Jeff improves after meeting his older self. Would also give more reason for why the Carol character risks her job and freedom to go and tip off David's parents.
@@davidjames579 Yeah it seems like a missed opportunity and like you said could have given David the confidence to as Jennifer out in '78, plus the dynamic of her being older now would have given them a bond and, as you said, would better explain 'Jennifer's' reasoning for helping David, an act that surely would have got her in a load of trouble. She could also say something like "Kind of a shame you never asked me out" and wink at him as he escapes and when he gets home he sees her at the lake and asks her on a date. Shame the producers never thought of making SJP's character Jennifer in 1986
@@RNC200711 Some good ideas there! Although it would be a coincidence her working there, and looking after him, it's plausible as the base is near Fort Lauderdale, where she's from. Also, NASA wouldn't know she knew David in 78. Unless they were going to check the school records of all staff aged around David's age at the base, but unlikely, and they were in a hurry to get him in for examination. "Oh my god! It is you! This is so weird! When I saw the name, I thought it can't be! But there you are. You don't remember me, do you? It's Jennifer, Jennifer Bradley" "Jennifer! You can't be! Jennifer's the same age as me, we're in Mrs Fisher's History class together" "David, that was 8 years ago. Where have you been? Why aren't you any older?".
@@davidjames579 Those are also very good ideas, the conversation between David and Jennifer is very plausible and would be good seeing them interact with her 8 years older and David still the age he was in 1978, like stated earlier if Carol's character was Jennifer it make sense she'd help him
@@RNC200711 Thanks! I can only think maybe they thought it was too similar to the situation with older Jeff, and it might dilute that, if they had a similar thing. Or weaken the end scene where David's obviously going to be buddies with young Jeff. I was always quite struck by David having to leave older Jeff, as they seemed like they'd built up a friendship. Maybe it'd be too much of the same with older Jennifer as well. But I like it. As another commentator on here said, what if when David got back to 78 he met Carol, now David's age, and they potentially hit it off (without her knowing the potential future they'd spent together). Pushes Jennifer out of the picture, but she never returns anyway. Although it's hinted David's changed enough, to do something. Maybe Jennifer was the fantasy, but now he's got to know Carol, she's the one?
I remember taking the "Backstage Tour" at WDW when I was 15, and seeing the Navigator-ship rotting away in a storage-yard (with a hole in the top of it, BTW.) was positively heartbreaking as a former 80's kid... =(
Several thoughts come to mind while watching this video about the very first film that I ever got to see in a theater... 1.) I didn't know it was released on the same day as Howard the Duck and Friday the 13th Part VI. Cool... 2.) Why hasn't Disney put some serious efforts into remaking this film or making a sequel? It would certainly have been cheaper (and more original) than buying/ruining Star Wars. (It hurts me to say that about Star Wars, but it's true.) 3.) The soundtrack is PERFECTION. I must get a copy of it on some form of physical media, preferably CD or Vinyl.
I don't think you want disney to remake this film at its current political landscape. Maybe like before 2014 would that be a viable thought but as of right now? Nope, its best that it stays as it is.
Loved this movie & the Explorers. I hope to have a kid where I can show them all these great 80’s movies. ALSO, Pee Wee’s clubhouse were amazing. ALSO, SJP is iconic NOW!
A couple of other fun facts: Max and the other puppets were made and puppeteered by the same effects team who created Johnny 5, one of them is also the voice of Johnny 5. There is a documentary called After the Navigator which talks about the movie but, also the life of its primary actor Joey Cramer Joey Cramer also had some brief moments as an extra in The Neverending Story

"Reboot" and "Remake" should be dirty words in Hollywood by now.
*STOP 'REBOOTING' 80'S FILMS!!*
Yes, please Hollywood!
The new It was a solid reboot...they need to keep reboots grounded and respectful of the original.
Agreed
In the voice of the commissioner from the beer commercials, AMEN!
The soundtrack is really good, in my not-so-humble opinion.
The single greatest movie of my childhood!
It still holds up, and I will choke anyone who disagrees!
... Force choke? 😉
Yeah, you can’t beat Star Wars
No argument here. And I've got the soundtrack

Compliance.
Sarah doesn’t remember it because her part never happened. The time travel negated it.
I almost kinda think she had to ride/suck some "thingies" on a casting couch to get the part and stay afloat as an aspiring actress.
Mark Brinkman - That's funny... Wait...U have a point...
Best. Explaination. Ever.
When he gets home and his family isnt there. That freaked me out more than a lot of horror stuff back in the day.

I did get to see the prop ship at Disney World
if there is a remake I want to see an 80s kid teleported to the 2000s. and have him be a Star Wars fan and 1st thing he does when he leaves the 80s is go see one of the new Star Wars movies. He might even have some vintage toys on him that he could sell to make money to buy things with.
My fave thing with this film was the creatures in the ship they were very cool and always wanted one as a toy.
B E Dawson Totally 😊
I'm kind of surprised they didn't come out with a playset. Toy spaceship, David action figure, etc.
10:55 With respect to SJP:
Danny Trejo has been in so many movies that sometimes he just catches something on cable in the afternoon thinking, "oh hey, this looks cool," and then he sees his own face 10 minutes later. "What? I was in this movie too?" He literally cannot remember the majority of his work.
That's actually pretty funny
Minty I just found your channel about three weeks ago. Despite what you say about the prop ship being degraded to being on the backlot Disney Hollywood Studio's tour... when I saw it on that tour, I got seriously excited (didn't know it was there).
Good to know it's still recognizable at least.
So did I. Wish they d give it a pressure wash and polish.

1. Failed Remake...….THANK GOD! We don't need them to ruin another good movie.
Bad remakes don't really matter. At the time they seem like the end of the world, but a few years later and history quickly forgets about them and they fade from people's memory. Only the classics are remembered.
Why are all my favourite childhood movies ''cult classics that did poorly at the box office'' ... =P
badly marketed, bad timing for movie release... limited release regions... who knows.
You have taste.
Because, like me, your parents couldn't afford the VHS tapes of better-performing movies? ;p

This was a huge hit in Soviet Union. We saw this movie like 10 times in the theater.

Glad y'all got it too. Was Goonies there too?
This was definitely one of my favourite movies as a kid. I don’t think a remake can live up to the blend of practical and CGI that this pulled off perfectly.
Such a magical charming movie 🎥👌
Never say never, if the Jim Henson company have rights to the movie franchise and do move forward with another, of course they'll use CGI but I would wager that they would also use some pretty slick modern practical effects.

Man the memories one of my all time favorites. Movies nowadays dont have nostalgia .
Maybe.
Meanwhile here I am, a 80s/90s kid happily grooving to that "alien" soundtrack like nothing is wrong XD
Don't forget The Last Starfighter.
@@KalRandom Never forget The Last Starfighter :D
Music is awesome and takes back to being a little boy.

With Silvesti doing the score, it was my other great time travel movie (along with Back To The Future) that I watched as a kid.

Now that he brought it up, I want to see Minty cover "Pee Wee's Big Adventure."
Hell yeah!
I remember taking the "Backstage Tour" at WDW when I was 15, and seeing the Navigator-ship rotting away in a storage-yard (with a hole in the top of it, BTW.) was positively heartbreaking as a former 80's kid... =(

Thank you for making this video. I watched Flight of the Navigator on Disney channel when I was a kid, and it was one of my favorites.
(It hurts me to say that about Star Wars, but it's true.)
3.) The soundtrack is PERFECTION. I must get a copy of it on some form of physical media, preferably CD or Vinyl.
I don't think you want disney to remake this film at its current political landscape. Maybe like before 2014 would that be a viable thought but as of right now? Nope, its best that it stays as it is.
Could you please do "Masters Of The Universe", with Dolph Lundgren.

A couple of other fun facts:
Max and the other puppets were made and puppeteered by the same effects team who created Johnny 5, one of them is also the voice of Johnny 5.
There is a documentary called After the Navigator which talks about the movie but, also the life of its primary actor Joey Cramer
Joey Cramer also had some brief moments as an extra in The Neverending Story
I always found it quite touching tbh. How a family moves on when a child is lost etc. A decent, thought provoking movie
