I’ve always stressed to the parents in youth ball it’s about the process, not the result, learn good basics, learn the game, be confident. The Ws will come later.

Youth ball umpires have the same basic objectives, especially when they are new officials.

This is this umpires first season after getting trained. He umpired a few years without any training (hard to fix bad habits). The video was made of all 11 games he did for review. I'll be uploading several clips over the next month.

@@MJHBaseball RETAIN THIS UMPIRE! If he's trainable, he's got good instincts and decent fundamentals. I wrote that basic critique last night partly because I couldn't sleep, but also to share with the wider audience what umpires evaluate each other on.

8U and 10U are levels of play where an umpire MUST have good timing, good patience, and good game management. In addition, the players barely know what's going on, the fans barely know what's going on, and the coaches very often barely know what's going on. Frankly, these levels of play are a great place for a mid-tier umpire to get better and excel at timing and game management (and call lots of obstruction). Unfortunately, due to the shortage of officials, we usually end up having to assign our youngest or newest umpires to these lower levels of play, and in my opinion, that's to their detriment especially in a 1-umpire situation or in a case where they don't have someone more experienced to backstop them.

This weekend I may work my first game in (I think) two years. If I ring a kid up on strike 2 only once, I'll consider it a success :-).

Something I like to do when I'm working the plate, on a drop 3rd strike, I give the safe motion and yell "play on, play on", it's let's everyone know there's a drop 3rd situation.

    Basic critique of the umpiring:
0:08: Camera angles isn't doing me any favors, but PU looks too much over the center/over the top. Get more in the slot. Stance is fine; a good heel-toe. Head height is good. PU does a very good job staying set once set.
0:14: Good read of the upcoming play and movement from the holding zone to a calling position. Unfortunately, PU ends up in a middle ground worst of both worlds calling position. Depending on which school of umpiring your area prefers, either get one step to the left for a 90 degree angle to the path of the runner for a traditional straight slide, or get two steps to the right to get into the wedge/keyhole for a swipe tag or hook slide. In either position, ensure that you know where the ball is after the tag attempt before calling anything. Nothing worse than an umpire-owned "out-safe", except the dreaded GIANT TOM HALLION BACKBREAKER STRIKE 3 MECHANIC on Strike 2.
0:37: Looks like PU remembered to work in the slot. Much better than 0:08.
0:47: No need to hold the safe sign after a dropped 3rd strike for so long. Don't be an airplane. Good patience waiting for everything to play out. PRO TIP: Either notch your indicator or file the dials flat on one side so that you can reset the count to 0-0 without looking at it. Three seconds after the play happens, PU is 1000% focused on his "clicker".
0:59: I like the 1BLX (first base line extended) angle here. The throw arrives early and the tag attempt is up the line. However, one maxim to live by is 'no ball; no call'. Instead of signalling safe here at 1:02, make no signal and allow play to continue. PU will find additional guidance regarding missed tags and missed bases in the OBR Umpires Manual, as well as other such reference material.
1:09: The plate umpires butt should always be pointed at dead center field when we bend over to sweep the plate.
1:23 Base hit to center. What are we pointing at (and why) around the plate area? Eliminate unneeded and uncommunicative signals.
1:25: Why are we signalling safe on a lollipop fly to the outfield where a runner scores? Don't make a call here even if the runner misses it. That's what appeals are for: watch the play and watch all runners touch all bases, but there is nothing to rule upon until appealed.
1:29: This may not be applicable in your area or your local codes and expectations, but as I have a softball background where all the players are girls: As an umpire, there's no reason to touch a player.
1:38: I don't care where Trackman or Pitch F/X say that pitch was; PU said it was a strike. Why the hell is he doing two separate strike signal mechanics: one point and one hammer?? Pick one and roll with it. Even if the PU thought incorrectly that it was Strike 3, don't combine a point with a hammer on the same pitch. Know the count, and don't stare at your indicator.

1:23 is catcher interference. It appears the batter contacted the catcher's glove, so the ump is indicating (very softly and in no manner that helps anyone) that the play is dead, the batter-runner is awarded 1B, and all runners advance 1 base.

    • @superdupe8214
      @superdupe8214 Год назад

On rewatch, he signaled catcher interference and only the catcher could hear him. The outcome of the play was identical to the outcome of his original call (which should have been louder and more demonstrative to signal a dead ball) so he laughs it off and tells the catcher his error. Mechanics are not great, but this is probably preferable at this level to making a big scene.

Yes, the 1:23 was catcher interference. Technically PU would wait for the play to finish and then call time and give the award for CI. If offensive coach wants result of the play, he needs to request it, but here, both options were identical. Good comments on umpire.

I agree with the out of position, however this camera angle does us no good for balls and strikes. With that said, it's 10U, the zone is gonna be a bus stop. We ain't having a walkathon.

How was he out of position? He has a kid doing the bases and has to watch a lot of things. He was in the wedge both times when he made calls at the plate. Not seeing what you're saying. And what do you mean about the ball being a foot outside? That's a hittable pitch, its a strike.

@@willowbrook2717 The U1 really wasn't 3rd base extended which 9/10 is where you want to be for a play at the plate.
