  • Two weeks in with building the shell - framing and roofing. The goal is to completely dry the Earthship in. Ben and his crew are doing an incredible job, likely to complete in 2-3 weeks. I am so grateful!

Earthships are made from lots of rubber, lots of wood, tons of concrete, lots of old cans, lots of old bottles, and lots and lots of labor. Please correct me if I am wrong. If you want to build a house that is cheap, easy, fast, then use rammed earth. No pounding dirt into old toxic tires.

Stucco a berm? i get it. How about chain link fencing laid on the ground, filled with gravel? Tires laid flat and side by side underneath the chain link fencing, filled with dirt, ready to grow weeds?

Absolutely, stupid imho. As those break down they will turn your land toxic. Those getting properly disposed of is so much better.
Same goes for making buildings out of plastic bottles.
Glass isn't so bad because it isn't inherently toxic but its not just a flawed material...its a completely needlessly use for those bottles.
I personally think this is horribly misguided and just unnecessary. Just use the right or better...the best tool for the job.

@@DCMAKER133 , I can see that my comment made you feel that you were insulted. No insult was intended but, perhaps I should have said that you are lacking some knowledge when it comes to Earthships and the off gassing of tires and plastic bottles. I never called you any derogatory names and I certainly did not insult your family or anything else for that matter. Ignorance isn't stupidity, it's just a lack of knowledge. All of these concerns about tire off gassing and health concerns about living in an Earthship have been disproven. Earthships actually have less off gassing and toxicity than traditional wood framed houses. Off gassing of tires take place around the first 60 thousand miles of the tires being driven. Used automobile tires are not a health hazard (providing of course that they don't catch on fire, in which case they are very toxic). Tires (and plastic) need sunlight, moisture, and microorganisms to break them down, without these elements, there is no decomposition of what otherwise is considered garbage. Even when exposed to sunlight, water, and bacteria, rubber and plastic take many years to decompose. Now, for an example, let's assume that tires and plastic are emitting harmful chemicals into the air and living space of an Earthship home. In order for toxic chemicals to escape into the air, it has to be made physically possible. The tires and plastic bottles are completely covered with adobe mud plaster which is then sealed, making it physically impossible for any toxic gasses (which are not released anyway) to escape into the air that we breathe. I hope this information was helpful to you and BTW, I never intended to insult you. Have yourself a nice day.
