Have you heard of Victoria Woodham? The first woman to run for president? She used fortune telling to get real stock tips from Carnegie and made 20 million in 1 week
For what she put her son through, this woman was awful and deserves no praise. She might have broken barriers, but she was a broken person. Letting your son DIE because you dont want to spend an unbelievably small amount of money compared to your fortune is HEARTLESS. I would wager she would be thrown in jail in todays world for that! Even with her fortune!
There are reports that when she died she had one pair of panties that she wore for at least 60 years. Now that's frugality on steroids! All these millennials drinking their fancy coffees would be rich too if they'd stop with the coffee altogether and just have one pair of underwear! It's also said she ate oatmeal in cold water to avoid wasting money on cooking it. Another frugality she did was never fully laundering her dress. She'd negotiate a reduced fee from the laundry to just wash the hem of her dress where it would get most dirty. Even though she grew up rich, at her 21st birthday party she was upset that money had been wasted on candles. She removed them, cleaned off the icing, and returned them to the store for a refund.
I read a book written about her, railroads were a means of getting her hands on vast amounts of land attached with them. She'd buy up the bonds and wait for the company to fail. Sell off the line and pocket the difference. Brilliant lady
So basically she invested specifically in railroad companies with vast land holdings and other assets and then when the company failed she sold the land and other assets making profit.

I remember reading about Hetty Green in the Guinness Book of World Records when I was a teenager. I think she was listed as the "world's greatest miser" in the book, as you mention. What really appalled me was how she allowed her son, as I recall Guinness describing it, to eventually have his leg amputated because she wasted so much time trying to find a free clinic to get treatment. That occurred at a time when she was worth millions, again as you mention.
A woman in those times was expected to give marry and give up anything she had to her "man" We can't fault her for not being so keen on that idea, rejecting it, and making certain she never "HAD to have a man" just to survive. Hetty Green inherited approximately $7.5 million from her father and aunt in the mid-19th century. This sum is roughly equivalent to $185 million today. Through astute investments, she expanded her fortune to an estimated $100-200 million by the time of her death in 1916, which would be approximately $2.7-5.4 billion in 2024 dollars.
