For what she put her son through, this woman was awful and deserves no praise. She might have broken barriers, but she was a broken person. Letting your son DIE because you dont want to spend an unbelievably small amount of money compared to your fortune is HEARTLESS. I would wager she would be thrown in jail in todays world for that! Even with her fortune!

There are reports that when she died she had one pair of panties that she wore for at least 60 years. Now that's frugality on steroids! All these millennials drinking their fancy coffees would be rich too if they'd stop with the coffee altogether and just have one pair of underwear!
It's also said she ate oatmeal in cold water to avoid wasting money on cooking it. Another frugality she did was never fully laundering her dress. She'd negotiate a reduced fee from the laundry to just wash the hem of her dress where it would get most dirty. Even though she grew up rich, at her 21st birthday party she was upset that money had been wasted on candles. She removed them, cleaned off the icing, and returned them to the store for a refund.

I was a little down (for about a day) because I was one of those people who did the right thing over the last 30 years. I'm now retired and love it. my assets being supervised for 8years plus has impacted a lot of exposure in nest egg (in excess of 2.8m), I say that because over those 30 years I was a personal finance junkie and listened to all my mentors (John Bogle, Warren Buffett, David Bach, sometimes Dave Ramsey) haven't spent any of my 401k, Roth IRA, or brokerage cash account. I don't want for anything, anyway. My kids will get my swag.

Hetty Green inherited approximately $7.5 million from her father and aunt in the mid-19th century. This sum is roughly equivalent to $185 million today. Through astute investments, she expanded her fortune to an estimated $100-200 million by the time of her death in 1916, which would be approximately $2.7-5.4 billion in 2024 dollars. So born rich, but she was one the most skilled investors among these already rich people.

she was a beautiful and great woman, i always read about finance and ive never heard about her, which is such an injustice to her and to the financial community, i would be so proud if i had a daughter like her, i would rather have a daughter like her than some spoilt brat princess that just spends money like it grows on trees buying jewelery and going on vacations and partying wasting it all, i hate that.

Of what i have read she took the interest of her father's fortune, which was given for her living and turned it into over 100 million by the 20s and 30s. Those managing her father's estate increased the capital value of her trust very little.

It doesn’t sound like she was ‘uneducated’ as stated here. She was obviously an autodidact.

A female Scrooge who also could’ve benefited from the visit of three ghosts. John D. Rockefeller saw the light and became the most charitable of the era, if not of all eras.

Is it me or was this story told in a really choppy way? Is there a longer version? All of a sudden she’s trying to steal her aunt’s estate, no explanation of who the aunt is, why she tried to steal it, or who the rightful heirs were. Then she’s predicting market crashes, though, according to her, Wall Street is no place for a woman. Then her son broke his leg, but where did he come from? Who is his father? Until 15 minutes in, I figured she was a lesbian. It is an interesting story, just hard to follow. Maybe I need more coffee.

Dang she was an icon. Her dad must have been a good teacher. Now as far as being cheap when it came to her son’s medical care, I do feel bad for him.

I see her grave every day. She is not held in high regard when it comes to character. First thing I was told was she was smelly and cheap. Then the story of her son and his leg.
