      you act like this is unarchievable... the only expensiv part in this is the amu (if u want it to go with decent mods)... the belt dont have to be perf 20% + t1mods either (even tho 20% would be nice).
      you could ditch the amu and the leech would still be great (95% is imo in 99% of the game overkill)

    Alright, this vid is confusing af, so I'm just gonna give a quick-and-dirty primer of just the important stuff for new players. This will be focused on telling them just what they actually should DO, rather than explaining all the underlying mechanics of how the system works (and needless to say, I'm going to be simplifying a lot, but knowing the system even deeper only nets you marginally better outcomes). Lastly, I'm going to leave out stuff that isn't, imo, all that important to know (such as 'leech duration', for example - just keep killing stuff and you're good). So, without further ado:
    1) Leech - You DON'T need to stack huge amounts of it. Your leech scales with your damage, so even a small amount of it will cover your needs with enough damage. The rate at which you get it is also capped, so stacking 15% of it or something using Eye of Chayula and whatnot isn't as great as you might think (without changing anything else, that is). Get a bit of leech and then just get more damage and more life/ES (as the flat amount of leech you get is also increased by having more total life/ES).
    2) Life Leeched Per Second & Maximum Life Leech Rate - Simply put, screw the first and get the second. Maximum Life Leech Rate increases your leech rate cap (base is 20% of total life/ES per second) and makes far more of a difference than the Life Leeched Per Second stat. Not that that stat is a bad thing, but don't go out of your way to chase after it.
    3) Slayer Overleech - Leech is like life flasks - it stops when you're at full life. This node prevents that, so you'll still be leeching even at full life. This isn't forever, though, which is where leech duration comes into play, but screw that. Just know that even at full life you're still gaining whatever life you were supposed to get back (think of it like pouring into a cup even after it's full, though you can't see the overflow), but once you've got it all back, it's done. Contrast that with 'true' life regen, which is just permanently on. Practically, though, all you need to know is that you should just keep doing what your namesake ascendancy says to - slay.
    4) Vaal Pact - Just think of this as doubling the power of your leech (Note: NOT how much damage you're leeching, just how well that leech tops you up), simple. It affects both the Life Leech leeched per second AND the Maximum Life Leech Rate mentioned in point 2. Both of those are good things, so if you don't mind not having regen, get it.
    5) Soul of Arakaali/Trickster Recovery - Just think of the 50%/70% recovery boost as a 50%/70% aka x1.5/x1.7 boost to your leech rate. The only two things you need to know are that both of them have conditions and that "recovery" is awesome as it ALSO boosts your life/ES (with Zealot's Oath) regeneration AND even your timed ES recharge rate as well. Arakaali is usually procced via running Blood Rage and then having a Cast When Damage Taken + Immortal Call setup interrupting it, and Trickster just requires you to kill shit with a Damage over Time skill. Oh, also another thing you need to know is that this boost won't show up in your stat screen numbers changing - cos this is PoE, a game so hardcore that even the tooltips and stat screens want you dead.
    6) Ye Olde Instant Leech - Only available on Bloodseeker claw (and to some spoiled rich kids on Standard), which sucks. You won't really use this much, but if you do, then all you need to know is that it essentially makes leech simple again. It takes whatever % of your damage you were supposed to leech over time and just straight up gives it instantly. So a 10k hit with 2% leech would give you 200 life back - no duration, no worrying about rates or rate caps or anything. Make those hits 5 times a second on a 5k life char and you'll begin to see why Vaal Pact no longer does this, as well as why conventional leech in PoE is designed in this complicated fashion. In fact, I'm mainly mentioning it so you guys know why this headache is the way it is - practically, you'll never use it.

    • @ArawnOfAnnwn
      @ArawnOfAnnwn 6 лет назад +1

      Obligatory inb4 nitpicks. Example: "Trickster just requires you to kill shit with a Damage over Time skill" - NO!! It only needs you to kill something that's AFFECTED BY your DoTs, the DoT doesn't need to be the thing that kills em'!
      My answer - Yes, I know. The point is, you don't need to confuse new players with these minor distinctions when they're new to the game. That node is a DoT node, which means they'll mostly take if they're playing a DoT build. Which means it'll work for them. This post wasn't meant to be for the 1% of edge cases where a new player might take that node when he's not playing a DoT build (hopefully by this point he already knows that in aRPG's "on kill" buffs are terrible). Hence why I wrote it like that.
      And ditto for all the other simplifications. If I've got anything completely wrong above, of course, feel free to tell me. Stay sane, exiles! :)

    • @ArawnOfAnnwn
      @ArawnOfAnnwn 6 лет назад +5

      I'm hardly the only one who found it confusing, and I'm an old player who's used to the leech mechanics in this game. Just read the other comments on here, as well as on its reddit post, and you'll see plenty of people felt the same. Hence my comment to help out. If you're someone who regularly works with stats, formulae, etc., please note that there's plenty of other folks who don't. And certainly don't expect to in a video game.

    • @ArawnOfAnnwn
      @ArawnOfAnnwn 6 лет назад

      Ex: "Not even leeching life is simple in this game", "Stuff like this is what turns off brand new players", "My head hurts", "information overload. still too dumb to understand", "This means nothing to me I'm sad to say", etc. And those are just from here, not Reddit. Yes, there are some who were able to follow it, but there's also enough who weren't to justify simplifying it.

    • @ArawnOfAnnwn
      @ArawnOfAnnwn 6 лет назад

      "leech is a confusing mechanic" Indeed, yet we've been able to figure out how to work with it all these years. Hence I posted that explanation of how to work with it above. They can still consult the video itself to understand exactly what all the various parts of it do, but at least this avoids them just choosing to give up in frustration as to what they should do to make the most of it.

    • @DeJayHank
      @DeJayHank 6 лет назад +3

      I don't really get the point of multiple Leech Instances really.
      Couldn't they have achieved the same result with just a "% of damage leech" and a "% maximum leech rate" stat pretty much, and then just have one single big "instance" of life leeched that keeps getting filled by your damage?
      i.e. One single big "bucket" of leeched life that can always be filled with the life you leech from damage.
      and then the valve from that bucket into your actual life is the "Maximum leech rate"

    Dear Engineering Eternity
    - please do a compairison between life leech and life gain on hit.
    My personal opinion life gain on hit is way better with fast attack charakters then the more slow regenerate life leech mechanics.

    Had to watch most of the vid twice and its still a tad confusing. The bucket analogy really did help though, and this does explain why i've had a character perish when i was sure i should have been able to out-leech the damage i was taking. So thanks for that and the vid, i know its not really a fun topic to try to tackle. See you all in Incursion!

  • @Karvarousku
    @Karvarousku 6 лет назад +6

    Great video!
    Very small thing though;
    In 6:20 Soul of Arakaali you have "50% increased recovery of life & energy shield" - It's missing rate. It used to be a like that in game (incorrect wording) but was corrected in the next league after pantheon released. If it was just recovery, it would also apply to instant leech like Bloodseeker's leech and things like life gain on hit/block/kill.

    • @ZockerPost
      @ZockerPost 6 лет назад

      The wording on that is rather misleading in the first place - it should be called recovery over time, not recovery rate.
      In every instance where recovery rate refers SPECIFICALLY to flasks, it also decreases the duration of said flask so that it doesn't increase the total life gained.
      General recovery rate doesn't do that, it actually makes you recover more life.

    • @Karvarousku
      @Karvarousku 6 лет назад +2

      Can you show me a case where you have "recovery rate" speficially for flasks, since the flask mod is "increased/reduced recovery speed", not rate. So it's clear it just cuts the time needed to recover that amount.
      Then you have mods like "increased life recovery from flasks" and "increased flask effect" which actually just increases the life (or mana) recovered without altering the duration.
      And then mods like "increased life recovery rate" will be another way to scale the amount the flasks heal you.
      EDIT: I guess there is one specific case: Herbalism, which has both Life recovery from flasks AND Flask recovery rate.

    • @ZockerPost
      @ZockerPost 6 лет назад +1

      Yes, multiple cases.
      i.imgur.com/9IuxOYy.png
      i.imgur.com/nDTQVBm.png
      The wiki is outdated on that. The mod used to say recovery speed, but that doesn't exist anymore afaik.
      Ironically it would've been more consistent if they kept it that way.
      How you should interpret "rate" is arguable (apparently even to GGG), but as it stands it's one term that describes two different things.

    • @ColorAgent
      @ColorAgent 6 лет назад

      Karvarousku I feel like the game could simplify the amount of mods available (cuz there are Tons), without decreasing diversity. Just seems like there are different mods that do basically the same thing. Maybe I’m wrong tho

    Basicly, life leech has 3 main components: a pool, a funnel and buckets. Every 'hp' can be applied to Energy Shield in exactly the same manner.
    Buckets:
    These are your instances of life leech. Each time you do damage that you can leech from, you make a bucket. Each bucket has a hole on the bottom, which can be altered by life leech rate. More life leech rate, bigger hole. Bigger hole, more healing/s. More healing, less duration (the bucket empties faster).
    Funnel:
    This is your max %hp leech cap. Each bucket pours into this funnel until it gets maximum flow, based on your max hp and increases and decreases of max hp leech. This is very important cause this funnel limits how much you can heal from leech to your hp! If the funnel gets bigger you heal faster to full.
    Pool:
    This is your max hp, your life line, every hope and dream from every hardcore player. Guard this precious resource! when you take damage, the pool empties with that amount. Life leech is the fastest way to replenish that, but as mentioned before, it needs some math to figure out the perfect ratios between max hp, damage, life leech, life leech rate and damage taken per second.
    Life leech is not an exact science so it doesn't have to be perfection, but having some over-leech doesn't hurt anyone.
    !IMPORTANT! Be careful with increasing your %hp leech cap too much, considering you didn't took the slayer ascendancy, once your hp is full every bucket deletes and the funnel is wiped clean. This can be very nasty if you get fully healed and then get hit with a savage hit! Manage your leech so you heal the damage but almost never fully heal so you can benefit the most from leech. However if you are a slayer with the ascendancy or you equip the 'soul tether' unique belt, you won't have many problems with this mechanic.
    GO LIFE STEAL TEAM!

    How would leech instances work with instant-leech from items such as Bloodseeker or Legacy Acuities?

    • @eliecrushyou
      @eliecrushyou 6 лет назад +1

      if im not mistaken, instant-leech from bloodseeker makes it so that the total life that was supposed to be leeched over the leech instance duration is instantly added to the life pool. So in the example where he had 100 life per second for 5 seconds because of the 500hp leech hit, he would instantly receive 500hp per hit.
      That's why old vaal pact was so overpowered. Anyone with a decently large dps or even just one heavy hitting skill could just leech all their hp back instantly and would be invincible unless they got completely one-shot.

    • @magisch430

  • @lolleonlolable

    did they change how leech works?
    in the passive tree u get about:
    100% total life recovery per sec (+maybe carnage heart +50%)
    55% maximum total life recovery per sec
    + vaal pact so both double ?
    + soul of arakaali 50% = 50% MORE.
    + slayer leech ? how long does the overleech last ?
    from what i understand/assume:
    base cap is 20% of ur hp per sec
    +50%max total life recovery per sec
    + soul of arakaali 50% = 50% MORE.
    = 40% (or maybe even 45%) idk if its the same so +100% or +50% / and another +50%
    than vaal pact doubeles that
    =80% max per sec ??
    and about 8% per instance ?
    is leech really that good ? that sounds kinda too good to be true

  • @Morti76
    @Morti76 5 лет назад

    It has lots of errors in math, please check as it misleads people. Ex: 7:43 -> 5000 life 2% max life per sec--> 5000*2%=100 life per second (5 sec instance) This is the correct, you wrote 5000*5% which is the leech amount, but then you come to the same 100 life per sec result??? You miss-typed the 5%. Then on next slide you follow again with the wrong 5% and at 8:17 -> you say 1000 life recovery which is totally wrong as you have 100% increase which means 100 life per sec*2=200 life per sec (as 500 total will be recovered this will create an instance of 2.5 sec long)... pretty simple math with % please check as almost all of your videos has those type of misleading calculations... Otherwise nice and I like all your explanations, Thanks! :)

    All life leech should be like slayer leech because why should I be punished for having full life?
    The unnecessary complexity is done for 2 reasons 1. To appease the hardcores/minmaxers 2. To Keep people with insane DPS from becoming invulnerable.
    This is why I use life gain on hit with molten strike.

  • @Mr-qt4xr
    @Mr-qt4xr 5 лет назад

    So basically, leech is capped at 20% max hp per sec. You can get leech capped with a small amount of leech because player damage compared to player hp pools is enormous. With Vaal Pact it boosts to a maximum of 40% max hp per sec. Am I right in thinking that? Also if something doesn't hit does that mean it can't leech?

Luckily when I got stuck some guy gave me a ring that gives gain +50 life per attack but that is different wording than life leech and has enabled me to survive but if I didn't have that say at the beginning of the season how would i survive without it especially because I've been told life leech doesnt work with abilities.

    I put a necklace on anointed with Martial experience Giving me a modifier of +80% to life leech recovery rate as shown on the character sheet But it is still showing my maximum as 20%?? What do I need to get the actual life I get back persecond higher past the 20% cap?

    • @EngineeringEternity
      @EngineeringEternity  4 года назад

      The stats since this video have been renamed again. So Martial Experience provides "Total" Life Recovery rate, which is equivalent to the previous name of "Increased Leech Per Second". To increased the total cap of 20%, you now need to get "Maximum Total Recovery", which was previously "+#% to Maximum Life Per Second"

    Does elemental conversion affect leech at all? lets say I invest in physical attack damage leech,but my build converts physical to ele damage (for example, ice shot has 60% conversion on the gem, id get the rest on the tree) to 100% elemental. Did I just gimp 100% of my leech or is it calculated before the conversion?

    Your comprehension of the game mechanics is amazing.
    While this kind of calculation is normal to D20 and other rpg systems, I belive that video game players will not grasp the steps, order, words and numbers alone.
    The bucket example is key to this kind of concept. You nailed it!
    Would be amazing if you could introduce some animation or just drawings to illustrate the concepts of yours math classes!
    PS.: RIP Vaal Pact Insta-leech =/

  • @Garryl367
    @Garryl367 6 лет назад

    I've found leech simpler to think about in terms of stacking, independent pseudo-buffs with durations, rather than pools of drain-rate-dependent size. It's the same explanation for everything except for the basic leeching instance and how %increased leech per second transforms it. It adds up to the same thing in the end, but I find it to be a simpler, more accurate explanation, if a bit unintuitive.
    1 - Leech%: Anything that leeches for you (typically hits when you have life/mana leech, although also Devouring Totem) gives you one instance of a leech "buff" (not actually a buff, so skill effect duration, Temporal Chains, Ichimonji's buff effect, and the like don't affect them). The duration of the "buff" depends on the amount leeched (damage * leech%) and your maximum life/mana/ES (whichever pool it's leeching to). By default, the duration is equal to the 50 seconds * amount leeched / your maximum pool size. For example, a 1000 point life leech with 5000 maximum life lasts for 10 seconds. Each instance of leeching has its own independent duration, and multiple instances stack.
    2 - Leech per Second: While leeching, each instance of leech causes you to recover life/mana/ES. By default, you recover 2% of the maximum pool per second per leech instance. Your "#% increased Life/Mana Leeched per second" mods affect the amount that each leech instance causes you to recover. For example, with 40% increased life leeched per second, you recover 2.8% of your maximum life per second per leech instance. Note that this does not affect the duration of each leech instance.

    • @ColorAgent

      EE gives multiple examples in the vid which make those parts not abstract, but I feel. maybe re-watch the parts with examples cuz they’re what helped me make the most sense of it. Being able to actually see how specific mods are applied to specific numbers helped me the most. Cheers

    I love this guide and have watched it multiple times and I never knew about the 2% per instance rule! Amazing stuff!
    However, there was one question lurking in my mind.... When you reach the maximum leech instances to reach max leech rate, you said extra leech instances are ignored. Does that mean, for Slayers, they'd have to wait out the entire duration of all leech instances if they wanted to use the super-beefy, minute-long worm leech?
    It would feel so much better if the leech instance granting the least amount of health would be kicked out, but it seems that isn't the case, correct?

      Damage you deal to the enemy, so it would be the final number that is calculated after their mitigations.

    Good video. I think a really good followup would be to show how to leech life for various play styles. There's some things that aren't obvious, like playing RF and still leeching due to using something that makes enemies explode. There's also sources of warlord's mark that people miss, etc.

    WHHHHHHHHYYYYYYYYYYYY would you get Vaal pact. it's not even needed. And it removes the other life gaining ability only to double leech life rate, which has a cap. where as you can get close to the cap without VP and then go on to build armor and life regen which makes you close to unkillable.

    • @EngineeringEternity
      @EngineeringEternity  6 лет назад +1

      Many builds do not have access to a lot of life regen, especially right side of the tree users. It is actually quite an investment to break 12-15% Life regen even on the left side of the tree, where as with VP you can get an effective 20% Life regen for 1 point. It all depends on what content you are running as well, like Labyrinth which makes taking VP much more difficult.

    • @EngineeringEternity
      @EngineeringEternity  6 лет назад

      You will get leech instances on every single hit that deals damage. Vaal Pact is very powerful for any build making use of leech, since it straight doubles your rates. It is most helpful for lower life pool builds, builds that don't make use of any regeneration or that make use of Slayer Leech.
