Fully agree with Teeling. I loved it for a while, but that rum finish is too sweet for me now lol. Definitely a good option if you like sweeter whiskey, or are already used to rum.
Bill, great job with all those options and detailed information. Tried the Tulamore DEW a few years ago for a St Pats flight and was very surprised how nice!
Just getting into Irish whiskey so this video is a great help. So far I have added Glendalough Double Barrel (a gift), Knappogue Castle 12 year ($50.95) and Red Breast 12 year ($69.95) to my whiskey collection. Your lower priced suggestions will be on my list the next visit to my local store, Warrenton OR.
I recommend Red Breast 12 usually. I vastly prefer single malt Scotch but if someone is asking for a beginner Irish Whiskey this is the one I often recommend. I sometimes recommend Jamieson Black Barrell. I dislike Paddy's and never buy it anymore (tried it twice - gave away the bottle) so I don't recommend it to friends starting out. I like the Powers and this is an easy 3rd recommendation. Cheers!!
Hey Bill. Love me some Powers Gold Label. It's not a single pot still though, its a blended whiskey. Maybe you were thinking of the Three Swallow and the John's Lane, which are single pot stills. Have you tried Powers Irish Rye yet? It would be interesting to hear your thoughts if you have.
Teeling is amazing. I also love sherried Irish: Sexton, Black Bush or Slane, for an average Friday afternoon, just give you that "well done, you survived another week" comfort..
Surprised to see Knappogue Castle 12 year not getting a mention. It’s a single malt Irish whiskey, very smooth, good taste, and relatively inexpensive.
I used to be a jack&coke drinker and then slowly got into islay peated whiskeys. I basically drank only lagavulin and laphroiag, but what really got me into smooth whiskey is the bushmills black bush. For beginners, you can really enjoy it with an ice-cube to make it even smoother, and it's cheap enough that it's not "ruining the whiskey" to put ice in it. It's basically the same price as regular Jameson and just tastes sooo much better. With Jameson it always feels like you're just drinking shots at a college party. It's not bad, but it doesn't really feel like drinking whiskey to me. The black bush is really giving you a whiskey experience.
@@TheWhiskeyDictionary not so much with scotch, but the Black Barrel tasted like bourbon to me and the only bourbon I really like is Frey Ranch Uncut. I didn’t know those 3 Irish were sherry finishes.
@@revolvermaster4939 Absolutely agree with you! Didn't like Black Barrel at all, but I always have a bottle of either Sexton, Slane or Black Bush. Out of this list, I really liked Teeling as well, would recommend..
Most enjoyable review. Personally I have found that some Irish whiskeys have changed flavour profile over the years. Used to like Tullamore dew. But not now. Loved the gold Powers before the rebrand exercise. Had a particular taste which is now not there for me. Jameson always fine. Ditto bushmills - any expression . In that price bracket though not Irish I cant see past Auchentoshan American Oak.
I'm interested in trying Powers Gold Label. I noticed that the price is extremely low (around $24 for 750ml). To me this would imply that it's a "cheap whiskey" and usually a cheap spirit will be inferior in quality to a higher priced one (but not always). What's the deal with Powers? Is it just a good 'inexpensive' Irish whiskey?
Hey late comment obviously because I just watched. PGL's price fluctuates above or below Jameson but I'd consider it a more premium product with better flavor. It's still a blended whiskey like Jameson and they're produced in the same distillery, but it has a higher percentage of Single Pot Still whiskey in the blend and it's 6 proof points higher. So you're getting more flavor. It's my go-to for Irish coffee but I love it neat as well.
I might be willing to try Tullamore Dew if they didn’t have a top 1 worst commercial song I’ve ever heard, an Irish drinking song about memes 😂 cheers Bill!
@@TheWhiskeyDictionary ruclips.net/video/i4X7XSL9fSU/видео.htmlsi=EKO9OkPF7LNibKUt The whole thing isn’t terrible but the first line always makes me cringe lol
Jameson Black Barrel was a bargain at $28 5 years ago, it was fairly priced at $37 3 years ago, and it's very overpriced at $49 now. These are prices local to me (northeastern Texas).
Black Barrel is good. But I like the Crested better. Paddy and Powers are wino whiskeys. And Red Brest is massively overrated. For my 20-30 bucks. I’d go after a sweet cork or a black bush.
Always hated regular Jameson, the 18 is great, but severely overpriced. I do love the Teeling Small Batch and The Sexton. Hated Redbreast 12. Love the flavor profile on Slane, but its too ethanol-y for me. Seems like it would benefit from some more time aging.
I laughed when you called Proper 12 junk. I would say artificially flavored vanilla 💩 , but junk is more RUclips friendly. It’s terrible!! I like Jameson reg or black, Slane, Bushmills reg and black, Teeling and I will try some you recommended. Thanks!
Powers Gold Label is NOT a Single Pot Still. It's blended, and has a higher percentage of SPS than Jameson, but it's fairly similar as they're made by the same company.
I'd have to go back and watch the video again, but I must have misspoke. It's a blend of Pot Still and grain, so maybe I misread or just misremembered what I wrote down. Thanks for the catch!
Anything is better than Jameson .. Redbreast 12 is the finest affordable Irish whiskey you can buy and leagues ahead of it. If you want a starter whiskey then bog standard Tullamore is outstanding.
Redbreast 12 is my favorite Irish so far, but that Bushmills Prohibition recipe is very good. Tommy Shelby would approve!
Wait till you try RB15!
Fully agree with Teeling. I loved it for a while, but that rum finish is too sweet for me now lol. Definitely a good option if you like sweeter whiskey, or are already used to rum.
I was introduced to Tullamore Dew by an Irishman who ran a pub, so... (Admittedly: later on I was able to treat him to some Yellow Spot!)
Yellowspot. Mmmm
How could you not include Slane?! That's my #1 budget Irish whiskey.
I wanted to put it on here, even had it on my table, but it would have been the only finished whiskey on the list.
@@TheWhiskeyDictionary Ok, understood.
For the budget $35 - $40 price range, it's Powers Three Swallow for me. Slainte!
Bushmill Black Bush is my favorite Irish Whiskey. Great video Bill!!!
Also love that! Give Sexton or Slane a try if you can find them around the same price.
Bill, great job with all those options and detailed information. Tried the Tulamore DEW a few years ago for a St Pats flight and was very surprised how nice!
It's such a solid, inexpensive whiskey
Slane has always been one of my favorite budget Irish Whisky's.
I didn't add that one to this list because it's finished and I didn't think that fit what I was going for, but I agree
New subscriber. I've enjoyed your Irish whiskey journey this month. Any thoughts on The Sexton?
Underrated whiskey! Hard to pour. I did a review on them a few years back. Thanks for the sub!

I usually tell people to drink RB 12 as well. But the price isn't really "entry level" for everyone
@@TheWhiskeyDictionary True. Right on Bill. Agreed.
I love how Irish whiskey is cheaper outside of Ireland 😂
Mad isnt it

Definitely could be on this list. Good suggestion
I'm a fan and had some KC 12 yesterday - nice crisp, lightly sweet not overly complex whiskey but very enjoyable. It's under $40 where I buy it.
About $45 here in PA. Still a bargain, IMHO.
Agree Knappogue 12 is very well balanced.

I always get a little bit of green apple from Jameson Black Barrel which makes me think of it as a cross between Jameson and Green Spot & yummy.
I recommend you do a review on the new triple triple offering of Jameson they just released in the states..
Kavanagh is my go to budget Irish
Awesome list Bill!!!
Been wanting to try something else cheaper. But i keep coming back to redbreast 12 😂
That is how I am with Green Spot
Couldn’t stand that Black Barrel, but the Sexton, Slane & Black Bush are tasty cheapos, IMO!

If you can get ur hands on a Powers 2 Swallows…like $40 and head and shoulders above most budget Irish.
I have one behind me actually, the three swallow. But it's old packaging so I didn't want to confuse people

Irish whiskeys I tried but rarely see reviews of:
a. Limavady; and
b. Knappogue Castle.
Please review!
I did Knappogue Castle years ago. I remember I really liked the 14 and 12 but was less into the 16.
Haven't had Limavady
@@TheWhiskeyDictionary OK. I will look for the KC review.
FWIW, the Buena Vista at Fisherman's Wharf uses Tullamore Dew in it's Irish Coffee.
Black barrel is a good call 🤙
My personal favorites
Green spot
Red Breast
Knappogue castle
Teelings
Bushmill 12
Crested
Agree with teeling. And their single malt is second to none.
Any thoughts on the Jameson Stout Barrel Aged? I just think it's magnificent. (The coffee version, though, is awful.)
Very helpful insight! Cheers 🥃 🍀
Glad it was helpful!
Oooh,i know a few whiskeys better than jameson :) Jameson black barrel is good tho
What would you say are your favorite Irish Whiskies?
@@TheWhiskeyDictionary Redbreast Lustau and Readbrest 12 CS are my favorite :)
The Black Barrel is miles better than the other Jamesons. I have that at home, together with Redbreast 12. Both amazing!

Tyrconnell Single Malt Irish Whiskey for $26. 43% ABV.
I don't love Tyrconnel as much as some other folks.
With Jameson you're just paying for a lot of their advertising. Kind of like with Grey Goose vodka.
