- Journalist, author and freediver James Nestor visits Google Mountain View to discuss his newest book.

Nestor's book and presentation focuses on how freediving is more than just a competitive sport or a hunting technique - it has become a vital tool in marine mammal research. The final chapter of DEEP takes place on the Schmidt Ocean Institute's R/V Falkor (Google CEO Eric and Wendy Schmidt are founders of the institute) with a team of scientists who are searching for life in the planet's deepest waters. Nestor, along with a documentary film crew, is currently working with big data specialists to see if they can crack the sperm whale click communication code (which researchers believe is a digital -- not tonal - language.
Very interesting talk. I heard James Nestor on Ocean Currents radio program. I appreciate this information presented to main stream. Mr. Nestor doesn't claim to be an expert. He begins his talk telling the audience that he was hired to write a piece for 'Outside' magazine which put him on an 18 month quest for information and learning to freedive himself. I like the theory that science is based on ignorance. No one is truly an expert in any subject . . . we're always learning, always discovering.
Brilliant , I work with children, young adults, with ADHD use the yawn all the time. The breathe changes everything and one thing for sure I notice is most are mouth breather. The science is clear and the brain is lite up when we nose breathe. Thank you so much for a great video.
The freediver video he has shown at the start of his video was actually collaged from many separate dives and does not resemble how a freediver achieves such depths recreationally.
The diver who did that veio admitted that himself.

Can anyone provide more detail on the last question asked about the sailor who followed his dream to find a white sperm whale and started a project based on it? She said there was a movie being made about traditional sailing vessels.

There sure are a lot of people calling bs in the comments but no one being specific about what it is that he is wrong about.
Armchair experts. Mr. Nestor's information led me to research freediving and I've been illuminated and would never attempt more than modest depths without proper training. Schools abound. Be smart.
This is what happens when some one that does not know what he is talking about gives a lecture. Outside Magazine should have sent some one else to do the story.

Oeiantate your body "upright" and click once for yes, oeiantate your body perpendicular to gravity and click twice for no. When they are hunted they will yell NO NO NO NO NO.
Free divers should carry a device that will click the names when they see that whale Edit THEN click while upright for yes and turn perpendicular and click no..
Actually, during repetitive dives freediving one can get the bends. The misinformation here is dangerous.
Take a freediving course, don't be a dumbass.
The Japanese are trying to study them..with Kikoman and Wasabe...seriously I am sure they are way way more advance than us emotionally

His lack of knowledge on freediving and sports in general is impressive.
It's not very well researched / misinformed / trying to impress with false numbers. Lots of what he says points at the fact that he either doesn't understand the physics or physiology of freediving, hasn't actually done his fact-checking or is deliberately misinforming the audience.
The guy is a fraud and doesn't deserve the spot on Google.
I've rarely ever heard such a conglomerate of misinformation, flawed logic and BS.
+Richard Wonka Thanks Richard, I too cringe when people who are presented as experts, talk such bs, and bring confusion by taking too much liberty with mixing and cherry picking.
Next time you hear a presentation about freediving, ask first if the person about his personal bests. Usually the people with national or world records talk very honest and truthful, and do not confuse their audience. Look up Herbert Nitch, Guillaume Nery, William Winram, Annely Prinsloo, Tanya Streeter.
I can also recommend doing a freediving course yourself; then you'll be able to ask fine instructors such as Richard Wonka how things really work, and experience how to get your mammalian dive reflex going, in a safe and fun way.

Richard Wonka, I can't see too much misconception and other thing you accuse James Nestor. Actually I've started to learn freediving myself, read a lot of animals and I've heard a lot of the stories about how whales and dolphines are coming to humans while with scuba they just swim away. What about the pioner research about Sperm Whale communication that is a subject to invastigate and serious research. For me it is extremely interesting subject and really don't understand what is your problem about his speech.
Have you read his book? I've been freediving and PFI certified for 7 years and it's incredibly well researched. Sounds like you're making some strong statements and not providing any evidence or examples to back up your point.
