    stoves like this were common in germany during the war because germany did not produce any petroleum fuels, but there were lots of farmers growing potatoes so they became a source for making alcohol fuel which was used in stoves, heaters and even v2 rockets. germany also developed a way to produce gasoline from alcohol for aircraft use. after the war they remained a common stove design because everybody was familiar with their use and alcohol continued to be available and was cheaper than gasoline or kerosene.

    Excellent! Practical and simple! Back in the day it would have been worth its weight in gold, say June of 1944 onwards.
