I remember crying in the cinema while watching this movie as a kid. My parents underestimated the horror depicted in this movie. I remeber it being great though.

@@تكوينجمالالكون it’s about a Scottish dude who just became a doctor and wanted to go to Uganda to do good there. While there he befriends the new Ugandan president Idi Amin. He becomes Amins personal doctor and advicer. But over time he learns that things are not as they seems.
Idi Amin was a dictator who ruled Uganda from 1971 to 1979. He was responsible for many massmurders and economic ruin in Uganda. He was finally overthrown when Tanzanian forces invaded Uganda and Amin escaped to Libya. He died in Saudi Arabia in 2003
This was such an amazing film. Great acting by all involved. One of my favorites!
James McAvoy and the fantastic Forest. Whitaker is great in this role. No wonder he won an Oscar brilliant film as well
When I've 1st seen blood diamond i thought Leonardo DiCaprio should win the oscar and I've seen persuit of happiness i thought that will smith deserve that oscar that year today after looking this movie i realised that why they never had a chance that year. Mind blowing acting by forest

I'm 54 now and I remember that, as a child, I was terrified of Idi Amin, because I saw a very graphic documentary about his violent regime. And I've never forgotten one of the shots of Idi Amin's private torture rooms. There was old blood splattered on the floor and walls, but the thing that really got to me was a man's hand print in blood on the wall.

I'm almost 62, and I'm the same. I heard things about him that made me desperate for him to be brought to justice. He never was. He ended up in Saudi Arabia, as I recall. He haunted me for the longest time

All of these years I thought the character of Dr Nicholas was based on a real person smh I should've known that it's wasn't & many the event's in the movie would've been fabricated to garner more excitement.

Yes, one of my all time favourite movies but it's based on a work of fiction 'inspired by true events'. Forest Whitaker is awesome, as is James McAvoy as the fictional Dr Garrigan.
Always love some Forest Whittaker content. He was, as always, adequately energetic for this role. Enjoyed this film quite a bit!

Idi amin is potrayed as bad even was n't that bad.
1. Asians owned most rich bussiness and ugandans were labourers and workers in them with asian bosses making huge profits. So he expelled asains. It would have been better had he made an agreement with asain bussiness owners to pay more taxes,better wages etcs, better rules for ugandan workers.
2 In this movie an assasination attempt is made on idi amin. He faced 8 coups in real besides countless assasination attempts. He survived like power rulers do by eliminating those who wanted to eliminate him. Iron cuts iron and in africa at that time violence had to be dealt with violence.Their is not footage of people fed to crocodiles and the killing numbers are exaggerated
3. This doctor was clearly a big fool,he had sexaul affair with president we was working for.What did he expect amin will do when he finds out that his wife is cheating on him with his person doctor.
4 Western media demonized him because he harmed western interests in uganda and did not let them exploit uganda

I also can’t believe he wasn’t even nominated for this performance. i think his skills measured equally to forests but, obviously, forests character was arguably more intriguing and interesting. Shame

Thank you for sharing your opinion on this. As an Australian, I've read many conflicting takes on both the movie and the history of Idi Amin - including the foreign interference by the British and others. It's difficult to separate the propaganda from the reality of what happened. That said, the movie itself one of my favourites for its stand alone value as a compelling visual and emotional drama.
I want to watch this movie so bad, but I dont know where :/

Of course he's American but his Nigerian and Ghanaian descent and superb acting make up for it.

He wasn’t but he is based on 4 different people who had had very close relationships with amin. Everything that happened to Nicholas happened to one of those four people and they squished the experiences of each of the them into one character to, I’m guessing, make the storyline easier to follow. For example, if I’m remembering correctly, there was a Scottish man, and there was a doctor who slept with his wife (Kay) but they were two separate people. The film was actually quite clever in that sense
