Thanks so much for this talk. It’s been very insightful. If you have read The Master and his Emissary by Ian McGilchrist (a book about the different roles the left and right hemispheres of the brain play in awareness), the thoughts in the room example of Dan’s seems to speak of greater right brain activity and a quietening of left brain activity. After reading that book it seems to me that most meditation techniques involve a training of predominantly right brain styles of paying attention. It’s an interesting read with many case studies cited of various people who have had brain injuries such as strokes or procedures that cut the commination between the brain’s hemispheres. There’s not much talk of meditation in the book however I can definitely see potential for a cross over.
Thoughts arise but they don’t snag you.. but I don’t think the kind of thoughts about what ppl think or why they did whatever somehow relating to “me” or the why things are happening as if they are happening TO me.. I can be self conscious but the value or weight of it is nothing and doesn’t effect me emotionally or in an incessant way
11:26 the pcc might have been activated. It's the BOLD fMRI, which measures the contrast, so it might have lost it until deactivation of the presence in the room.
No matter how much u don’t identify with you..or your physical… the world does so you can’t escape recognizing that view as part of your circumstance either way
I have aphantasia as in if I think about an apple I don’t ‘see’ and an apple, but I get a sense of an apple and I’m definitely thinking about an apple. Maybe the people that don’t think they have thoughts don’t have gross auditory monologue thoughts but they have a settler sense of thoughts so they’re still having thoughts and thinking thoughts but they’re not just as loud or clear as other people thoughts. So like my Apple is still on Apple, even though I don’t see it maybe there thought is still a thought even though they don’t hear it.
I suspect you're right - thought shouldn't need a monologue, which is merely a representation of the mental movement in symbols, but those symbols are not in and of themselves the thought, which should be obvious because you can have the same thought in different languages.
I think they've met. Unfortunately, Daniel doesn't seem to believe that Gary or others are really experiencing this. Which is a shame since no internal monologue is something that can show up even amongst a non-meditating population. People seem reluctant to believe that others are experiencing things that they haven't
Yes. It is pointless to discuss mahamudra or dzogchen without bodhicitta. Without that essential point of mahayana buddhism, one'll keep misinterpreting and misunderstanding what is meant by the basic state or buddhanature in mm or dz.

Thanks!
The "thoughts in the room" insight was extremely valuable.
wow this thing with detuning the room was really insightful
Fantastic interview. You asked some really great questions.
Loved the question and answer about body identification.

GOOD PODCAST!
Wonderful conversations (parts one and two).
Oh, there's part three! Just noticed :)

Daniel should meet Gary Weber. Gary has no self-referential thoughts.

I had no self reference for awhile ..?
the no-self is still essentially a self, it's simply the nondual self.
people will notice a change

He has very limited understanding of Dzogchen/mahamudra it seems!

I've heard him go into more detail in other podcasts and found it insightful
