I remember vividly begging my parents for this very expensive set for them at the time !! I finally got it for my birthday, learned so much about differentials, gear box, etc. A few years after I got the fantastic 8851 Excavator and discovered pneumatics. 15 years later I passed my engineering degree :D

My dad wanted this set really badly as a kid, but when he finally saved up enough money to order one (via phone, because 80s!), they told him they’d just sold the last one. So a few years ago I bought the set for him on BrickLink, assembled and disassembled it in secret to make sure all the parts were there, and gave it to him for Christmas. So 8860 is special to both of us, and I look forward to seeing how this project turns out!

The 8860 set was released in 1980. Say the designers were in their 30s then, which means they are now in their 70s and probably many of them are still alive. I really hope some one points out this video series to them. It must have been amazing to first experience that the set they designed became one of the most iconic Lego sets of all time, and then to - 40+ years later - find out some one is building a 500% scale replica...

Something to keep in mind might be how many small pieces are in this build. I suspect the added surface area of so many pieces is going to make it weigh much more than your initial calculations, since you can't reduce infill of the exterior surface. The outside of each print has to stay solid.

The 8860 is beautiful, 8865 is bit more complex but the 8880 is too ugly and modern in its looks, but it does pack a lot of functionality especially the gear box and double steergn mechanism are delightful. But the newer ones are too difficult to motorize due to their weight and the complexity of the shafts involved. Always test your designs on a flat stiff surface. A carpet is very large surface area of resistance when testing motorized design, puts enormous strain of the gear assemblies.

My first set was the #9 Go Kart, received for my 8th birthday. My cousin at the same time had the tractor. I recently managed to build the tractor with parts on hand.
My friend got the 8860 as his first Technic kit a few years later. I was jealous. A year or so later we were shopping for a present for me as a reward for a good school report card and I had my eyes on an electric motor set. But my Dad suggested I add some of my own savings and I came home with the car chassis.
Great memories. Going to be following this build with great interest!

This brings back christmas memories with my uncle, he bought me many of these kits, after presents we built these on the kitchen table together
I ended up with this 8860 car, the 8859 tractor, the 8845 dune buggy, the 850 forklift and the 852 helicopter, If i am lucky most of the pieces
still exist with my parents, thank you for the refreshment of memories :)

If 882 was the yellow helicopter, I built that when I was a kid, by reverse engineering it from Lego brochure photos. You know the components and can count holes and hey presto! The rotors turned and changed pitch.

@@markfryer9880 I was lucky enough to spot the yellow helicopter on a flea market about 15 years ago. I'd never seen that set before then, but recognised it must be fairly rare and snapped it up complete with box for very little. I was amazed when every piece was present. It was a surprisingly good set for its time.

This was my present when I was in primary school. My dad said if I could be no. 1 in the exam he would buy this for me. And I worked really hard and eventually achieved it, and he kept his promise. This was a huge set in the time! I kept it for a very long time, but somehow after many moving homes it vanished and I don't even remember how... What a shame.

I was 7 the first time I saw that marvel of technology that was the mighty red Lego tractor in a local toys shop. I started dreaming about it but the huge cost put it out of reach. So I decided with my parents that I somehow would pay for it. Small home duties, pocket money and asking all the people I knew to give me money instead of birthday and Xmas gifts. After almost one year I managed to cover 80% of the price tag an it was Christmas time. Imagine my disappointment when going to the toys shop I discovered the red one was gone forever... but it was replaced by the 8859 kit, the blue humongous tractor (to my child's eyes) and after some shameless begging, it became my first Technic kit ever, still on display to this very days. One thing blew me out... I discovered too lately that with a few more money I could get the Car Chassis... it remained my holy grail for years. Needless to say that in those years in Italy, no internet and small toy shops with limited choice, didn't help to feed the need of a small but greedy Legohead. That said, you Sir have a new subscriber.
