    That massive $50k one they cut in half was gorgeous. I'd love to make a large pendant and rings out of that.

      I wish they grinded them down instead of cutting straight through to preserve the size of it and getting a "nugget instead of a half cut, but i get it would take a long time.

    Straight up if they didn’t cut all these in half and instead extract with grind stones this collection would be worth ten times the amount

      I'd assume that they cut it because they're processing so much rock with little to no value in it. Grinding slowly through every single one simply isn't feasible if you're going through so many 'duds' with nothing of value in it, or opal of a far lower quality and value.
      Basically, by cutting them, they can evaluate more rocks, and thus increase their chance of finding opal in the first place.

      They explained in another segment that aggressive grinding will cause the opal to disintegrate, so it just wouldn't be feasible to gradually grind each one down to determine if it was even of any value.

    I remember this episode very well. And I must say if I had not seen it I would have never believed.
    I mean this is in my opinion the best haul of opal I have ever seen!
    Really awesome and truly what dreams are made of.
    I can not help being both jealous and envious!

    Its so much happinesses ...I had tears...looking at their happiness... WOW this collection is so beautiful so artistic OSM PATTERN after cut open OPALS...and that one which were green OPAL looks like a coconut shape..This happiness is REALLY priceless...

      @@SlavesWereGood XD except no. I kinda had that similar line of thinking about the Yowah nuts for a little while. The reason they don't lap them all on a diamond wheel is because until you get into it you don't even know if it contains opal at all or to what degree. It would literally drive you insane within an hour.

      The host rock holds the opal together. If you are unlucky, when you grind the rock away it will also break the opal and make it fall apart.

    Why do they cut right through them? Wouldn't you try to keep the opal as big as possible?

      Its a gamble. Cut it and you know what value it has, but you lower it by cutting the opal.
      But if you dont cut it, you have no idea how big and clear it actually is

    I dont understand why you would cut each nut directly down the middle when thats where the opal would probably be.

      couple reasons, the nuts are either going to be specimens or cut into jewellery. In both instances, cutting down the middle shows the most face for specimens and allows more backing for cutting into jewellery

      No choice, can't see the opal in those whole nuts without doing it, just like in the beginning when they found nothing in them, and people don't speculate on opals, it's all about known amounts.
