  • A weekend of riding in Seoul.
    In light of the ongoing genocide, the Gaza Sunbirds para-cycling team has reverted all its resources to providing community-led aid to Gaza. To date, their athletes and staff have distributed over $45,000 USD worth of aid.

    Donate:
    www.justgiving...
    Some notes I found useful from my sister-in-law on what to consider when donating to an NGO. A non-exhaustive list that I found useful:
    Are they on the ground delivering support? Some NGOs utilise their strong brand names to receive donations and regrant to smaller organisations on the ground.
    Do they have access to the affected community?
    Better yet, are they part of the community? Being community-led reduces the risk of wasteful services.
    Do they have an established history of working in the area? What works in one country, doesn't always work in another.
    What services or items are they providing? Cash assistance, sanitary items, toys for children are important items alongside food, medical support and women and children protection services.
    Are they providing duplicative services?
    Will the donation go to this current crisis or be diverted to another one? Some NGOs run emergency funds. Once the donation target has been reached. Any additional donations may be used for other emergencies.

    Hello again from SF. Another great video. Your last few video minutes were especially thought provoking. In another video you shared your love for the "Cheers" theme. Your video at the end reminded me of another great theme song. "Get together" by the Youngbloods,1967. It was a popular song in the states during the Vietnam era. Refrain "come on people now, smile on your brother, everybody get together, try to love one another right now". I believe evil and darkness are always a force. We must combat it with peace, in our thoughts and actions everyday. Peace ✌

    I watch videos like yours, and many others, for a snapshot into the on-the-ground perspective of other places in the world, that I'll probably never visit. I search for bike riding ones because even on motorcycles, the perspective and mindset is different. Laid back cruising on back streets and bike paths around new places is fascinating. I like the little coffee shops, foods, and hidden views that many other people miss, or just won't see. It's really something. I watched all your videos in order, and will keep watching.
    I'm currently building up a 1986 Miyata 710. I'm converting from 2x6 to 1x9. Drop bars to flat. Down tube shifters to indexed. I've done thousands of miles on it in stock-ish form, so this major overhaul will really be something. I'm primarily a motorcycle mechanic, so learning bicycles is new to me.

    • @probablyriding
      @probablyriding  8 месяцев назад

      That sounds like a fun overhaul. Working on a bike is probably a breeze after motorbikes.
      I like to watch similar videos of places I’ll never visit. My favourite channel is Bald and Bankrupt who visits places in the depths of the former Soviet Union that I know I’ll never go to.

    I have that GT frame! (Possibly from a different year). Repainted green and adapted to single speed & disc brakes. It's a joy to ride. Retro mountainbikes are having a bit of a moment in cycling culture it seems, I've seen a lot of them recently (or is it just the algorithms?) -- They are great fun for upright city riding with a short BMX stem and comfortable handlebars. I dare say they make for better chill/allrounder bikes now than they ever did mountain bikes (due to the lack fo suspension, but solid build, fun wheel size, external cables and standard specs).

    • @probablyriding
      @probablyriding  8 месяцев назад +2

      Sounds like a sweet bike. They’re definitely better commuters than mountain bikes and it’s nice to see them going through a renaissance. Can’t see current new bikes being around in 30 years!

    What's the frame pump you have on your Romulus at the end?

      It’s a vintage silca pump that came with the bike.

    I really admire Seoul as a cycling advocate. I live in Singapore and don't get me wrong, the cycling infrastructure here is excellent but the availability of quality (non-road) bikes is very limited. I even had to get my mamachari (i.e. the bike I don't really care about which I park outside the train station while I'm at work) secondhand off a Japanese guy because the ones sold here are so poorly-made, they start breaking after 2 months (not exaggerating). The Japanese mamachari is 9 years old and still running smoothly. Would really love me a nice Rivendell or Crust some day if I had the shipping budget.
    Oh and really appreciate the genocide awareness! 🇵🇸

      Here is the same really, mostly carbon road bikes but more practical bikes are appearing more frequently.
