Thanks. Nice overview. I really liked my test of the HG-2MS, but I couldn't justify it separately. Maybe I need to spring for the subscription. You're helping convince me.... ☺️ I watched a review of the HG-2MS where the plugin was compared to the actual HG-2 hardware: there is a difference in the high-frequency aliasing (hardware: none, plugin: some). But, that could be handled by upping your DAW sample rate for printing the mix or with the plugin that lets you put the HG-2MS in an oversampling container (name escapes me at the moment).
When I compared it to the hardware it was just overall depth that it lacked when all brought together. The MS can actually sound better used right but using them the exact same way I found the hardware had that extra 5%.somebody said to me they sorted a lot of the aliasing out in the new MS version but I never checked
@@PaulThird Thanks! I have to say I might have misspoken: the comparison of hardware to plugin was for the plain HG-2 plugin/hardware. The video is here: ruclips.net/video/1dFEXzhvS_g/видео.html The reviewer didn't, I don't think, cover aliasing in the HG-2MS review. So, I shouldn't say for sure they didn't address the aliasing. However, if *I* were the developer/marketer of this plugin and I did address/fix the aliasing, I sure would have made that front and center in all my marketing material, videos, etc.... Nevertheless, it's still an *awesome* saturation device/plugin, at least I think so (I shed a little tear when the demo ran out... :).
Hi Paul, thanks for your video! I read that the SPL d-verb is taken from the transient designer sustain knob. Is that true? Is exactly the same? Would It be useful for me to the d-verb if I already own the Transient designer plus? Thank you again!
Fully LOL'd at PA's latest email, thanking customers for all the support after they had their flood year ago. They thanked us by giving us vouchers for any plugin at basically the same price they sell them every time they have a sale (so like, every other bloody week). Three whole vouchers at $29.99 for 48hrs only guys - get 'em while they're hot 😲😂🤣
Hey Paul I'm curious are you still using any of these since you cancelled your subscription? I guess that means did you purchase any of these? If not, what did you replace them with?
@@PaulThird Very interesting! The cheap bastard in me keeps waiting for a sale on Gulfoss. I don't think they ever come down. Thanks for the reply Paul. Really appreciate your channel!
I think we might be related or share some genetic audio preferences trait haha. Most of the plugins you mentioned I use every project. I also usually pick the audio you prefer in the blind tests. At least 9 times out of 10 haha. I haven’t tried the Elysia Comp yet, still use Fabfilter MB for lowend mixbus compression. So I guess I should try it! The PA sub is definitely the best value subscription in the plug-in world IMO.
I subscribe to their bundle as well. I've ended up using my vouchers to purchase outright the ones that I use all the time, that way I never lose access to them if the business model changes down the road.
Fun thing when PA briefly had the rent to own model, pick pack, they actually gave the plugins for free to those who had active subs. The model lasted i think for around half a year and was for 24 months so was pretty good deal for 10 cherrypicked plugins
How dare you to not open this with "HELLOOOOO". While the video was loading I yelled HELLLOOOOO, with a fine scottish accent, and there you were, just saying "my nehm is Poll Therrd." 🤨 (😉)
I opend my DAW just to see whats in my "GoTo" Folder: elysia alpha (LOVE LOVE LOVE it for mastering), shmc class a (frkn good on the mixbus), vsc-2 (go to for fast vocals), bx_limiter (mainly for individual tracks) and the lindell 80 (my go to character channel strip). i do also use the ssl 4k e. it sounds good enough for me (never touched a real ssl console) for fast eqing
I was using the elysia alpha for a long time on mixbus for a touch of compression, width and the soft clip. Ive been condensing my mixbus chain a lot recently though. Shadow Hills I was using on the print bus up until like 3 weeks ago Vsc-2 was my drum bus compressor of choice for a while but I only use it on kick / snare bus every so often now. The more I started looking about the more I started to become way picker but I'm an out and out plugin junkie 😅
Ivory 4 high band at 27khz and Q factor at the default setting(NOT SHELF) sounds the same as the MAAG 40khz air band IMO. If you put it through plugin doctor you will see that they have a very similar curve as well. Green Zen on 26khz and Q of 1 also does something similar.
I've actually never checked out both in plugin doctor to see what changes were made. I read somewhere they sorted out some aliasing issues in the original but I can't say for sure unless I checked
No, they didn't. At least not initially (maybe they fixed it?). There's a video where a producer compares the output of HG-2MS to the HG-2 hardware with an analyzer and the aliasing artifacts are there with the plugin. Increase your DAW sample rate or get the plugin container that let's you use oversampling just for the contained plugins....
@@briancase6180 I just can't figure it out: is it so hard for such a manufacturer to make such a simple implementation for such a priced plugin (pluginS)??))
Funny that you pick the cleanest ssl channel (in real life at least). Most studios i know that had one were classical and jazz, so in my mind its really associated with these genres
I honestly dunno what it is about that 9000J. Just has its own vibe to my ears. Almost like a bit of a bounce to it. Even when I compared it to slate, CLA Mixhub & AA sand in the video i made near the start of the channel I preferred it. I do hit the THD quite hard though when I use it though. Also remember it was modelled after Brauers 9000j console and he mixed countless genres BUT his heavy lifting was done by his ABCD chains
Are there actually any people who can guess the spelling of your surname from the way you pronounced it at the beginning of this vid? But seriously, can you still love the Maag after you've seen the curve it actually produces?
Thanks for the video, but for your own domestic economy's sake, if that's all you use from the uber-mega-super blah blah, I would spent $60 on KVR and own all those plugins straight away. I just sold the bettermaker and the ssl J for $30 each and all the other ones sell for peanuts (maybe not the neold saturator... yet... I give it a few weeks until it hits the $15 with voucher threshold). Anyway, thanks for the video again!
Its the options for me though. That's just 10 I use in every mix guaranteed. I like to have the option of the guitar and bass amp sims, vsc2 for occasional kick snare bus, shadow Hills, Lindell 80, elysia alpha, opticom, purple 77 and stuff. Plus it means I get all the new plugs that come out which have been pretty stellar tbf. I don't mind paying the money for the options. I'm an absolute plugin slut and I'm always experimenting haha 😅
Could you do a video in English? It seems like you have a lot of useful information and I'm not from whatever dungeons and dragons faery land you come from. I concur about the J console plug-in. Beef right on the d&b.
Just slow me down man. There is a button on youtube that changes speed. Put it to x0.75 and it should make it easier for you. Scots speak naturally faster than other nations
@@PaulThird I'm just having a bit of fun at ya! I like that you gave a legit solution like I was making a real request. I'm a fellow Scotsman, at least partially, but I grew up in Texas and Louisiana. We are known for having mysterious/unintelligible accents if you aint from round here, as well. Difference being instead of Harry Potter and Guy Ritchie, when people here Southern accents they think racism and incest. Im just Italian enough to agree with you that AA is multo bueno, and still drink erryday...
There is a button on youtube that allows you to slow me down. As I'm Scottish I probably talk at x1.25 compared to others normally but if you choose x0.75 you'll find it easier to understand. It's more the speed of the tounge haha
I personally don't feel that I'm the right guy to be asking people to pay me to teach. If I had a lot more experience as a working engineer and mixed a few big records then possibly but it'd just make many more analog luddites and engineers despise me. Not worth the hassle at this moment in time
@@PaulThird well, here is an idea: Instead of asking people to pay you to teach, think about one thing, that you've missed for a long time when it comes to mixing, but finally figured out. Make a 10-15 min video about it. Name it: "One secret trick for silky smooth highend" or "the secret of passive-EQs" or "why most de-essers suck" .. and watch the response. If people hate it, you can always delete. If people love it, you can wait for people asking for a second one.. and that's when you can TELL them to pay you, instead of asking for it. Or disregard the stranger giving you advice on something he probably knows nothing about.
Oh I see some like-mindedness. Agree on the SPLs (almost every mix), agree on the Maag, agree on the Metric A/B, don't own the Mpressor - may test it because of you, gonna charge you if I like it, hate the Bettermaker - tried it, hate everything about it.. just looking at it..disgusting, the Blackbox (standard edition) is beautiful though, use it more often than not. Also hate SSL.. every SSL plugin, no exceptions! Only Plugin Alliance Plugins I own that you didn't list are: Elysia Alpha Compressor (sometimes great, not often) and bx_subfilter (never use it). My shortlist is several Bx eqs and saturation, rooms reverb, opticom XLA only for its color, HG2 and Purple MC 77. I sometimes reach for the SSL E for its color.
I wonder, do you use any PSP plugins?
Not tried any PSP tbh 🤔
@@PaulThird To me they are close in quality with PA. Some of their effects and EQs I still grab often cause there is nothing like them. Their comps don't get much love from me (their FET has an interesting character bit the rest I've tried mushed transients too much), also I got hold of their super complex mastering limiter recently (Xenon) but its very challenging to use so far.
thanks for the vid , u didnt do that hello thang u ok ? yeah they make great plugins i think u missed many out but all ill say they're on sale all the time think i have 72 of them, cost me a bit 2 buy , so buy on sales only not like i did cost me crazy to much . they are class if anyone don't have any try them b4 u buy , some are mega mega ,others are not so good . i should list my top 10 but i have no time got to record in a mo THANKS AGAIN PAUL keep helping the kids out U ROCK

All the ones I use!
🤓🤓
Hi Paul, thanks for your video! I read that the SPL d-verb is taken from the transient designer sustain knob. Is that true? Is exactly the same? Would It be useful for me to the d-verb if I already own the Transient designer plus? Thank you again!
Can you do a video on the better maker? It was hyped up to me I don't even use it would love to tho
ruclips.net/video/n-7u1jcWeVI/видео.html 🤓
Are any of these plugins doing anything that isn’t covered well by the Izotope Mix & Master Advance bundle?
Tbh only one I still use now from PA is spl drum replacer
Fully LOL'd at PA's latest email, thanking customers for all the support after they had their flood year ago. They thanked us by giving us vouchers for any plugin at basically the same price they sell them every time they have a sale (so like, every other bloody week). Three whole vouchers at $29.99 for 48hrs only guys - get 'em while they're hot 😲😂🤣
Hahaha no such thing as a free lunch
@@PaulThird Apparently so mate XD
Hey Paul I'm curious are you still using any of these since you cancelled your subscription? I guess that means did you purchase any of these? If not, what did you replace them with?
I used 2 years worth of vouchers so I got spl deverb & drum xchanger, black box hg2ms, magnum k, maag eq (🙈) & Lindell de-esser
@@PaulThird Thanks for the reply Paul.
The one I was most curious about was what you’ve replaced the Bettermaker with?
I stopped using a pultec on the mixbus. I use a combination of bassroom, mixroom & Gulfoss
No other plugin subscription comes close 🙌
BTW.. Audio brothers 👊 haha!
I subscribe to their bundle as well. I've ended up using my vouchers to purchase outright the ones that I use all the time, that way I never lose access to them if the business model changes down the road.
That's what my plan is but I don't think I've had my big voucher yet and I've been at it since it started haha 😅
@@PaulThird weird. Me too, and I’ve had 2 so far
Fun thing when PA briefly had the rent to own model, pick pack, they actually gave the plugins for free to those who had active subs. The model lasted i think for around half a year and was for 24 months so was pretty good deal for 10 cherrypicked plugins
That said would not assume them to hand over their whole catalog in the case they choose to change it 😅
How dare you to not open this with "HELLOOOOO".
While the video was loading I yelled HELLLOOOOO, with a fine scottish accent, and there you were, just saying "my nehm is Poll Therrd." 🤨
(😉)
There was a hello everyone but I can't remember why it was taken out haha there was a reason but I'll never remember 😅
Shadow Hills I was using on the print bus up until like 3 weeks ago
Vsc-2 was my drum bus compressor of choice for a while but I only use it on kick / snare bus every so often now.
The more I started looking about the more I started to become way picker but I'm an out and out plugin junkie 😅
@@PaulThird shadows hills sound better on drums
@@PaulThird thanks for sharing your techniques too paul
🤓🤓
Ivory 4 high band at 27khz and Q factor at the default setting(NOT SHELF) sounds the same as the MAAG 40khz air band IMO. If you put it through plugin doctor you will see that they have a very similar curve as well. Green Zen on 26khz and Q of 1 also does something similar.
There's a free plugin called luftikus that attempts to be the maag. For free, it's not too bad.
its ease of use for me though. super easy to use, super low on cpu as well. I genuinely dont even need to think haha
@@PaulThird Yea that's true
I strongly suggest the purple mc77 for vocals
I was using it for the longest time as my 76 over every other 76 but I just prefer the neold but I can see why others still use the purple
@@PaulThird I'll give that a try too
I suppose Brainworx did not implement an oversampling in the Black box?
It's about the gui bro...that's where the sound lies.
I've been very disappointed by the SPL Transient Designer actually; the UAD version is better same for the Kiloheart version imho
I'm now using oeksound spiff. That thing was a revelation to me haha
Not after I was able to deeply null it with kirchhoffs modelled curves
@@PaulThird ah yeah, missed that. Thanks
SPL E-Vérrrp
Im just Italian enough to agree with you that AA is multo bueno, and still drink erryday...
man cool vids but you talk too fast..where u from?
Scotland. BTW there is a speed button on youtube where you can slow me down 🤓
@@PaulThird HAHAHA ITRIED, BUT SOUNDS WEIRD,,,,YOUR ACCENT SOUNDS LIKE RUSSIAN
Is it only me or anyone finding it hard to follow his accent? And btw what accent is this?
There is a button on youtube that allows you to slow me down. As I'm Scottish I probably talk at x1.25 compared to others normally but if you choose x0.75 you'll find it easier to understand. It's more the speed of the tounge haha
Well bruh😄
Any interest in teaching classes to beginner/home hobbyists? You could probably make some nice $$$$

Why are you subscribing? Why not owning? Owning is better, join the good side! Don't be a slave, be a capitalist.
I'm gonna start buying now I'm only using a set amount of plugs where years ago I was using WAY more
