  • This is the Aluminum Hammond Multiplex with the rare four row mathematical shuttle. It has been fully cleaned and serviced, and types like new!

    As a former pro typist I always wanted to learn the Varityper. I did learn the IBM Selectric Composer back in the seventies though my concentration was on word processors. It was, and is, such a great concept, just like the Blick. Astounding how much mechanical genius in design and manufacturing we saw in the area in only a few decades.

    Do you know why this type of mechanism didn't catch on?

    • @TypewriterChicago
      @TypewriterChicago  Год назад

      It did, it lived on though the 1980s as the Varityper. Very popular for newspaper mockups. For general consumers though, it wasn't the most convenient to use.

    Lucas, a wonderful machine, I had never seen one, it appears to be a fore runner to the golf ball and Daisey wheel as well as the spinning disc

      Not particularly, the shuttle is a unique mechanism. After Hammond's death in 1917, the company was bought out and eventually renamed the Varityper which became a newsroom staple as a cold typesetting machine until the 1980s.

    Hi Lucas,
    I don't know how I missed this video when it came out. I am glad it popped out as a suggestion.
    Your restoration work is fabulous! This machine shines everywhere and looks great with new key legends.
    In addition, the music is so soothing, with your typing in rhythm. I also want to say that your camera work is beautiful. The details, the zooming into focus and the framing angles are fantastic.
    This is in my saved list.

    I have a multiplex (not a folder like yours) but for the life of me, I can't figure out how to get to that fourth row of symbols. None of the keys seem to raise up the anvil high enough. (Yes, I have the Num and Den keys and all the symbols on the keyboard, so it isn't simply a mismatched type shuttle.) Hints?

      The four row hammons are insanely rare. Only a few were made.

      @@TypewriterChicago No, I meant I can't figure out how to access the bottom row on the four row type shuttle, where all the math symbols are. None of the controls raise it up above row #3.

      @@bwhogI see, it may be possible you have a four row shuttle on a 3 row machine. I can swap it for you (the shuttle)

    Hey Lucas, I have a question about the Short Story Competition for this year (2022): I understand that entries do not have to be typewritten, but if they are, will “points” (you get what I mean by “points”, right?) be taken off for misspellings or typos (EX: The quickk brown fox jumps over the lazzy dog) if the typewriter cannot correct? Also a specific question for golf element typewriters (EX: IBM Selectric III), daisy wheel typewriters (EX: Smith Corona DeVil 450), and digital entries: are there any specific fonts NOT allowed, like the Olde English FONT or any cursive fonts? POST SCRIPT: I do realize that on your website it does say that all entries must have “polished grammar and spelling”, but will a small exception be made if it is typewritten and the typist tries to cover it up (EX: Putting a slash or over-typing, like putting a star and dash over a typo)?

    • @TypewriterChicago
      @TypewriterChicago  2 года назад

      Anything that impacts readability will be detrimental. As far as a point system, there is none. Correct your errors properly, either corrected on the machine or with white out or x's. Don't just fill in another word with an asterisk, make an effort to correct the mistake. Any type style is fine.

    • @msms5435
      @msms5435 2 года назад

      @@TypewriterChicago Thank you for the answer, I will try my best to correct or cover up any typos. Just one more question though: would a note to the judges (that is separate from the story) be acceptable? Like if I were to add a little note after the story ends for the judges, would that be ok? If not, then would it be taken into consideration when the story is being judged?

    • @TypewriterChicago
      @TypewriterChicago  2 года назад

      @@msms5435 what kind of note? I mean, you can't bribe the judges in any way lol. Stories are being judged solely on the content within, not any extraneous variables so a note would likely be redundant. If your note is to clarify things within the story, then the story needs work. Good stories don't need to have separate material for the readers to be able to understand them. I hope that makes sense?

    • @msms5435
      @msms5435 2 года назад

      By “note”, I mean something essentially saying apologies for any typos, mistakes, etc. It’s something strictly for the judges and NOT the readers, and it would not be about the story itself. And yes, that does make sense.

    • @TypewriterChicago
      @TypewriterChicago  2 года назад

      @MS MS i would refrain from apology notes. You should try and create a work as polished as possible, and let the work speak for itself. Don't shed light on your mistakes unless they are brought before you.
