Testing Welding Methods for Typewriters
Decided to torch some scrap cast iron to create a "worst case scenario" for cast iron welding to see just how bad things have to be before there are issues. Surprisingly, these things aren't as delicate as I had originally believed them to be!

I thought I could do this in about 15 minutes. It took 25, and then another 10 to dial in some fine adjustments. Still wanna go back and adjust the key trip feel. I shall try again another time. If only I didn't keep losing things and having things go wrong...

This is a pretty great wide angle lens for the Hasselblad x system. I don't usually go wide angle, but compact and discreet is my priority. I have long used the CFV back on my 500cm, but that is a large, heavy, and loud camera. I need something smaller, even considering selling the 907x and CFV for an X1D2 or an X2D. I don't want or need 100mp and I don't want to spend so much, but I don't know...

A short video on this lovely restoration. We've all seen a Rem 2, nothing fancy, but I think from rust bucket to showstopper is a pretty neat thing, so I decided to highlight this for just a minute!! www.typewriterchicago.com

The 2023 Rover Typewriter: Worst Machine Ever?
I watched a lot wonderful repairing and restoring video in your channel. I wondered if you have some information about how to remove the platen from a Stoewer Record?
@@ShaoningChen-o8p i am not familiar with that machine sadly :(
Thank you anyway, I‘lol give some more tries myself
Excellent, très bonne vidéo, très démonstratif, très bien filmé. à suivre Bonne suite. Merci pour votre travaille.
I’ve got a Smith Premier No. 2 with a frame cracked on both sides, probably 3” cracks each and see welding as my final option since I don’t want to destroy the paint. My current plan is to make some brass braces to bridge the cracks, but I’m worried if drilling into the machine will just cause more cracks :/ thoughts?
@jonnyswanny4701 cat iron week take drilling well, otherwise typewriters wouldn't have been made. For best results keep it cool, and go slow.
Are you using silicon bronze filler rods?
@AtelierDBurgoyne i have actual cast iron filler rod. Haven't tried it yet
To my previous comment I cannot edit it, I meant “sand blast” or something.
@@ronwood788 i can't see another comment, but I'd only sand blast if I wanted to refinish the entire thing. Since I'm doing such a tiny area, grinding or hand sanding is more controlled.
Never knew I’d learned how to weld cast iron, but I’m glad I stumbled across this
It might help too to brace or clamp the pieces in place first, so that they don't set off-line like this did a little. Here is me giving advice and I know absolutely nothing about any of this. Haha!
Absolutely, I just didn't feel like setting all that up for testing :)
I think brazing would work pretty well, at least for a typewriter. The surface area would likely be great enough, and it's much cleaner than a weld. Great video!
Fun!
The power and contrast of the lonely Nagra playing Floyd in the woods, it’s perfect.
I love your videos, so beautifully done! You do wonderful work.
No commentary 👌
Just finished restoring a 1923 Model 1
A very helpful video which answered all the question I had. I appeciate that you don't hype anything, but also leave out nothing. I fear this video may have cost me a lot of money. As a Leica shooter now and former 500C user I am thrilled that this back works so well. I wish I had kept my 500C...
I'm glad you enjoyed! I've posted a few updated videos since. Really is a great system. I ended up selling my CFV and getting an X2D. The stabilization and better ISO performance makes a massive difference. I do miss the 50mp but it gives good crops!
Good pairing of machine and music; a touch of spaghetti western to go along with this snappy Italian product.
Thank you very much - as you say correctly, most other just show off their machines without demonstrating what they can do. Amazing pair of Nagras you have there. Me, I'm waiting on a Nagra-E, which is the only Nagra that is somewhat affordable.
They are absolutely wonderful, and sadly expensive. My IS cost $600 which is pretty good. The SN cost 5,000 for two units, but I was able to sell one to cover most of the cost of both.
@@TypewriterChicago Something that is just as much Swiss Made and satisfyingly well made are side cutters from Erem. And they cost just 80 bucks. 😄
I'm glad the machine is not truly noiseless. The machine sounds are as attractive as the videography. The best danged typing video I've ever seen. A delight.
curious, does this also shoot video?
@timglover31 yes, only the 50c models though, 2.6k. It isn't the best honestly, so the 100c versions dropped this feature. I have some sample footage on my chanel
Thank you for making this video. I emailed you a while back and still in the market for one.
I didn't recall! I sold it about a month ago :/
your choice of clicky keys kinda ruins it imo, should have gone with soft spongey caps to keep the authentic retro feel and sound.
@hamsticklehq it is significantly quieter than most vintage clicky keyboards like the model m. A lot of portable ones were rubber dome though. Just personal preference, I like clicks.
Thanks a ton man, the videos quite nice and helpful 👍
INCREIDBLE! I just recently acquired my own and I am so excited! I just need to learn how to properly care for and maintain her for now :)
Just got one of these beauties. Needs a few adjustments. Any idea where i can find some repair tutorials
There are none that I know of for these models
Cuz they never need repairs? How do i get the ribbon out? Seems to be a catch of some kind on both sides but i see no lever or button
No, they're just not common enough, and typewriter repair tutorials are very scarce to begin with.
Heh, are you recording your audio on the reel-to-reel in the background?
Nah, that's just playing me some music while I work and customers shop 😊
Nicely done!
I need to upgrade my lighting. I already have zero space to work so I'd need something I could pack up quickly
Yeah, I got a cheaper light from godox and just keep it set up in a corner and drag it out when I need it. Ideally I'd have one or two more
Such great information, thanks for a great video!
I just came back from The fox maintenance My 1930's and 1950's typewriters and they have this one all dusted away!!! These are young kids that inhereted their parents shop now the sell computers but Also fix electric and manual typewriters though not often they do not know the Museum typewriter they have. I told them that if it works I Will Buy it better than it be all dusted away.
The OG keyboard, hands down
Very nice. I like the bling of the machine!
Magnífica!
Budget and reality conquers all. I got a used X1D II for $5,000 less than the X2D and initially got and used 45P for $1K more. Love that it uses SD cards which I had. Two days ago, I received the 75P and that is a fantastic lens. Then there is the reality of the size of files these cameras produce. a little over 100G for the 50mb and over 200G for the 100mb sensors. I do not have the classic 500c so having the 907x does not make sense right now, however, I do lust for it. Everyone has to make their own decisions on which model fits their needs and their reality.
@chrisbogart687 you're absolutely right. The prohibitive price tags makes these super difficult to achieve. I've been looking at the 75p, it's very nice but even at its "budget" cost it's more than I can afford right now. I just sold my 907x for 4k this week, also selling my Sony and several other things for an X2D. Made up my mind. Bought it used so I saved a bit, but it still requires a LOT of equipment to be moved. I do worry a little about file size since my pc isn't the best, but the IBIS and the tilt screen are important things for composition and the things I like to shoot.
I always look forward to the moment when you type the text👍
It looks like it just rolled off the assembly line.
Nothing beats black and chrome! I have 3 Underwood 4 banks, a green finish, a red finish, and a later model year in black and chrome. I mostly write on the black, but I love them all. 😊
Huh? I wonder how I missed this video? 🤔
Love these short films 😍
Upcoming thesis defense got me feeling real pessimistic, it's due in 3 days. I'll update after 5 days
Good luck, dude. You got this!
Update: It was a proposal defense, our group got grilled on the specifics of our study but somehow got Minor Revisions. We as a group have to reconsider if we want to go through with the project, since it might not be achievable within the time frame + it costs too much money. The initial process is so exhausting.
Half of typewriter repairs just feel like trying to thread a screw in and then proceeding to drop it, over and over and over again. Not to mention having to find the screw each time, but it's still fun.
I recently bought an SG1 from 1963. It has a font that Olympia called 'narrow diamond' ('schmale Diamant' in German). It has 17 CPI. So the typewriter is practically useless because the font is almost illegible.
I have an SG1 with this exact typeface that I use to write up invoices. You can fit a lot into small boxes. It's more legible with clean type and a crisp ribbon.
@@TypewriterChicago I can imagine that a video from you about this exact machine would fascinate not only me. And clean types are not a not only a good tip, for me they are essential.
I really love this think it vary elegent
Debating between an earlier and a later Royal 10; the earlier one is in better condition, with all the decals preserved, while the later one has its decals basically erased. The later one, however, has the basket shift. I was wondering if anyone could comment on how heavy the carriage shift is in the earlier models. I actually don't mind carriage shift, and even prefer it at times, but I've never typed on a standard carriage shift, and was wondering if the extra heft of the carriage makes the shift that much heavier. Thanks for the video!
Its actually about the same between the two.
@@TypewriterChicago thanks! Does your shop ship internationally?
Sometimes, ya just got to get the frustrations out, so they don't turn into demons.❤
What a sad wastem. I was hoping hed repair them
I'm sorry :( due to the construction of the element, they can't always be fixed. It's a high impact piece so when the plastic body is compromised (the element is plastic with a metal coating) nothing can be done. I have tons of dead elements.
@@kuzadupa185 ruclips.net/video/2XZBX7v-mVY/видео.htmlsi=13giP3JaRifjZE45 This one might make you feel better!!
Impressive… And yet all I can think about is how the lettered elements could be used for tabletop games…
Ooh that's a good idea
@ Right!? Letters, numbers, and symbols on one „dice“ A few modifications and I think the possibilities are endless. ^^
So some of them have broken latches. So let’s break this one and Look.
