This was so lovely to hear at the recent NYC concert! I've long been a fan of John Jacob Niles and the first line of this song has always been a favorite.
this song was first sung by Annie Morgan a young girl in 1933 to John Jacob Nile’s in Murphy, nc he was traveling through Appalachian mountains gathering songs that were being sung by the local people her father was a minister
@@caladam Opinion respected, but "arrangement" implies liberties to be taken, including tempo, since a slower tempo w/ rubato is more fitting for the choral medium to help the unique harmonies be more effective, imho. :)
Fantastic ensemble. I agree a bit too slow. And now I'll really piss off the sycophants...I'm not crazy about the soloists voice or rather the way he chooses to use it on here.
If music was a meritocracy, the world would belong to these men.
This is beyond marvelous and wonderful. They have literally brought me to tears... again! Absolutely glorious.
MY FAVORITE CAROL thanks so much, guys
Beautifully done. And the lyrics of this old Appalachian song resonate loudly. The promise of the ages proclaimed. Soli Deo Gloria.
Stunning.
Surely, this is sung by angels.
This arrangement is the best version of this delicious song. Love.
It doesn't get any better than this...
That was magical! Truly magical!
Simply beautiful. Thank you all.
Sublime.
Agreed, but listen to the original posted below. So satisfying in a very different way.

Too much 'der' Needs to be softer endings to the the 'r's
About 20 beats too slow.

@@tenorislife I think that proves my point about tempo.

I looked at the comments thinking wow your gonna get proven wrong but I was wrong and I got to get rid of this toxic mindset

Still think John Amos' version is tops, but that doesn't take away from this.
Sublime.
