The reason in the past Indonesia did not fight Japan like the Netherlands was because Japan propagated itself as an old Asian brother with the same characteristics of Indonesia and they made the Japanese Indonesian education and political system also helped Indonesia in regards to its independence example = house of admiral maeda was used as a place for proclamation negotiations
I think the genocide committed by the Dutch should be an essential part of Dutch history education. This genocide changes the narrative of the Dutch as victims in WW2 to the Dutch also being perpetrators of genocide. The awareness that such horrific crimes have also been committed by your fellow countrymen is essential if we really do want to be prevent genocides from ever happening again, because it makes us more aware of the severity of the problem.
First I believe we should adres the meaning of the word genocide. I don't think you can call the Dutch war crimes in 1945-49 as well as the Indonesian Bersiap period (1945-6) genocide. Furthermore you will put the Dutch on a par with the nazis and that is not the case. What the Dutch did was unacceptable, but they never aimed to whipe out the 'Indonesian people' or people group as a whole. Do understand that.
@@HistoryHustle Yes, I do understand that we (yes, I'm Dutch) never tried to wipe out the Indonesian people, so if that's how you define genocide, then no, it wasn't a genocide. But some Dutchmen did willfully massacre groups of Indonesians in retribution for the acts of other Indonesians. If that isn't genocide technically, I'm fine with that, but I still think it's morally very close to a similar massacre motivated by pure racism. The problem I try to address is that we would like to think that our fellow countrymen are better than the predominantly German Nazis, but we are capable of doing the exact same things and have come horribly close to actually doing those same things. That is fundamentally why I think history lessons about the "police actions" are important : to teach us that every country is capable of doing what the Nazis did. We're just lucky that it hasn't happened. If we don't learn that lesson, we haven't really understood how the holocaust could happen.
You're pointing out something important here. First you can argue that any circumstance can lead a people doing terrible acts. In other words: you don't have to be German to do such. This is also based on the theory written by Christopher R. Browning in his book: Ordinary Men: Reserve Police Battalion 101 and the Final Solution in Poland. That massacring towns is an unacceptable crime, I couldn't agree more. That we need to teach further generations about this (WW2, and Indonesian War of Independene) I'm all in favor. I do have a problem when people put the Dutch in Indonesia on a par with the nazis. The nazis acted out of an extreme racist ideology that was passed from top to bottom. I do believe most Dutch war crimes were in reaction to Indonesian (armed) resistance, not out of extreme racism. Yet, we can argue that by today's standards people back then were racist. That is another discussion. I am repeating that people that lump the Dutch ánd the nazis simply lack historical insight.

The same questions should be asked in British & Irish schools about the dark side of the British Empire from Kenya , Indian partition, Malaya , Irish war of and decolonisation. The facts need to made available to all pupils and students.

Anytime I read of 'police action' my first instinct is to assume harsh measures, not gentle peacekeeping. Precisely because I studied this part of Indonesian history extensively in school.
Something must be wrong with the Dutch history education. A Foreign Policy article ( The Dutch Are Uncomfortable With Being History’s Villains, Not Victims A refusal to confront colonial atrocities persists in the Netherlands.August 10, 2020) says that a 2019 poll in The Netherlands shows that only 6% of surveyed thought Dutch colonial rule was a shame and 50% were proud with it. Dutch history education is a failure. I think the BlackLivesMatter movement gave hope that soon or later countries will end-up face their crimes like slavery or genocides like in Indonesia etc.
Interesting article. I'm not sure about the numbers. And by therefore stating Dutch history education is a failure is a little bit exagerated. I do believe that because history isn't a mandatory subject any longer and we have too much to cover in too little time.

Just want to say sorry that some of the Indonesians here might seem a little bit salty/confusing by giving you rude comments, some of us still hold grudges against the Dutch & Japanese because of what they did to our ancestors. Most of my friends great grandparents (and so on) who participated in war told their story about the things Netherlands did back in colonization era from generation to generation, so some Indonesians might've still carry the trauma they had to face back then. Still, the current generation are more forgiving and open than others, I hope you'll understand.
yeah the books portrayed the Netherlands as pure evil, but the Japanese not. We were helpoed by many japanese troops anyway. It was also Indonesian war cadets in japanese academies that won the war.

Associating our country to imperial japan will make our history looks evil to the west, which is no good with liberal countries. Indonesian war effort kept the Japanese army well armed, fed, and fueled. Sadly our "team" lost the war.

i am dutch and i have had at least two tests about VOC and colonization and two about indonesian war and my teacher made sure we knew what happend there (Molukse eiland uitmoorden bijvoorbeeld) but i think they still kinda pushed the opinion of the dutch being kinder then the japanese. sadly enough i chose sience and have had history for only 3 years(vwo, so 6 years)
Thank you for your videos, there doesn't seem to be much info like this readily available, especially in the West. I'm Canadian but my father was born near Jakarta in 1947. My Opa was a marine and fought the Japanese after he fled to Australia. My Oma was captured by the Japanese and survived 4 years of being in the camps. Afterwards WWII my Opa fought until 1949. My family first moved back to the Netherlands, but only stayed for a year or so and then moved to Canada. My family was in Indonesia for more than a hundred years. We're also part Indonesian, my great Oma was biracial. I feel connected to the country and I hope to someday go there. As for my family's history, I don't know what they were involved in specifically during the colonial period, but I can assume it wasn't good. The only stories I have are from my Opa who would tell me things as a child, and they're not something in this day and age I am proud of. I can see a lot of comments under your videos from people currently living in Indonesia. If any of you are reading this, sincerely from me, sorry about my dickhead ancestors.

I grew up in Maluku island which has strong dutch influence since pre-independence. my grandfather was also a dutch. As far as I admire dutch culture and their football team, dutch colonization was still a criminal act and military aggression. They (dutch) had contributed to form the first communist party in Indonesia which once divided our nation and turn our people to against each other. whoever Indonesian who think that they came to Indonesia to support our country and still deny their aggression, he/she must be a communist descendants or some idiot who has inferiority complex problem.

Still, everytime i watch video about the genocide in surabaya, i always cry.. so idk about we have to forgive them.. The way i learn about our history is our people is too kind to foreigners thats why its easy for them to doing "divide et impera" in the past..
In my 70s, was in the Vietnam war, and was a history major before and after my time in the military. One of my gripes about history books is the rewriting of history by people with no connection or real experience in the events they write about. War is brutal, I know, I spent 5 years in it at a time when we had WWII like causalities.There's a lot that goes on that is hard for people to understand that have never experienced death on a grand scale. History can only be understood when looking thru the eyes of the people that created the history. Most of those people that do later write, don't put down their real emotions. What were their social norms and what they faced controls many of their actions and reactions. Few Dutch or any other civilian have any idea of what their soldiers went thru while fighting an insurrection. I'm not defending unnecessary killing.
It is pretty surprising that in the Dutch textbooks all of the pre-20th century resistance against the Dutch colonialist (fights that were conducted by various old Indonesian kingdoms/indigenous groups against the rising power of VOC or the Dutch-Indies government) are left out. The Dutch are always potrayed as pretty much the devil in most textbooks who have invaded Indonesia for 300 years and all of the people who fought against the Dutch colonials even before the conception of a united Indonesia are considered national heroes here. Also, surprisingly the Dutch war crimes during the military aggression of the Dutch isn't taught that much in the Indonesian textbooks ,they do teach you that the Dutch does attack the republic again after WWII in an attempt to retake Indonesia but they only highlight all of the fights being done by the Indonesian troops. I think this is a downside to the Indonesian perspective on history because most of the time they only highlight the heroes, important events, and the fights between the Dutch and the Indonesians but things like war atrocities by the Dutch are rarely brought up.

Essentially when the Kingdom of the Netherlands fell to the Nazis, the Dutch queen fled to Britain however she ended up in Ottawa and Pregnant at the time. IOT have her child officially "born Dutch" she was allowed to have some Dutch soil, (somehow transported with her) placed under the bed in the Ottawa Civic Hospital where her daughter Princess Margriet was born in 1943. Further it was Canadians who were largely responsible for liberating the Netherlands in 1945 as "Juno" the Canadian wing of the Normandy Invasions ended up in the Netherlands. It is for this reason that the Dutch thank Canadians each year by supplying us with thousands of Tulip bulbs which we display in our national gardens in Ottawa. They're on display now! Another fun fact about Dutch-Canadian relations is that there are approximately 1.1 million Canadians of Dutch descent as of 2016,(yours truly included) or about 3% of the total population of Canada. In the Canadian Armed Forces Canadians of Dutch descent make up a whopping 15% which is massive and the largest non-British, non-French contingent there. Again I chalk this up to Dutch pride in Canada for what we did during WWII.

Launching a EUR4,0m study about 1942-1949 war atrocities would only work if you answer the basic question “ Why Dutch returns to Indonesia in 1945 after Allies defeated Japan?” ... The Dutch tried to reinstate to its Indonesian colony, while Indonesians tried to defend its proclaimed independence.....anything that happened during that period should be seen in that context.

I'm from Dutch heritage. My father, having just come out of the second WW was drafted and sent to Indonesia as well as one of my uncles. Both of them tell a story of them fighting the English for a good part of it. They told me that the Dutch had agreed to pull out of Indonesia and hand it back to the Indonesian Government as they could see the writing on the wall for the Dutch. It was supposed to be a controlled pullout. The Indonesian Govt were concerned that it would leave a power vacuum which would encourage the English to try and take over. The Indonesian Govt did not have the capability to repel the English. However, the English noticing this wanted to colonise Indonesia for themselves. The Dutch were fighting both the locals and the English. Some wanted the Dutch to stay, most wanted the Dutch to leave, some wanted the English, others wanted none of it. From my family's perspective it was a very messy war with no clear sides defined and/or aligned. It appears no one clearly 'won' as every group lost something. So your story books are just that.. story books.

@@bicanoo_magic3452 My grandpa fought Brits in this battle. He was a simple farmer from Sidoarjo (near Surabaya). Battle of Surabaya (November 10, 1945) is still commemmorated as Heroes Day.
In Canadian history classes in high school, we discussed the use of (racist) propaganda and the internment of Canadians of Japanese descent during World War 2. Although I learned this over 40 years ago, I do recall a reasonable discussion of this period, even if some would argue that it did not go far enough. It should be noted that Canadian men of Italian descent were also arrested, and, taken to labour camps in the Canadian interior. This was not taught in schools, and, is rarely acknowledged openly. Canadians of German descent were not arrested; the economy would have ground to a halt, if 10% of the population had been removed from their homes, and, placed into camps.
I was in secondary education and I remember that even back then, we talked a lot about colonialism and the Indonesian war of independence. Both viewpoints were addressed. And both viewpoints were the truth for both sides. The Dutch back then had to restore order and safety. They were made responsible for that. And yes, that implied also that colonialism would be restored, which is of course bad. But both things were real. There was anarchy and murder on a grand scale and there was an independent republic declared. Independence, by the way, cannot be declared according to international law. Independence needs to be recognised by the rest of the world before it becomes "real". So strictly speaking the Dutch were right is saying that that was a non event. Having said that, the Dutch should just have gone in, round up all Europeans and leave. Hindsight is 20/20.

Honestly, I don't understand the meaning and different between Politionele Acties and Military Acties? Does it have cross-border areas? Does it also have a limit regarding weapons? Does it also have a limit regarding the target? Politician? President?
In short: it was a military action. The Dutch called it a 'police action' by making it look like a limited action (only police units were involved) so the US wouldn't complain. In the Netherlands the word 'Politionele Acties' isn't used that much in recent publications any more.
If you ask this question for when I went to secondary school 1980s, the answer would have been nothing, were it not for a diligent history teacher who thought it was essential that his pupils received at least some information about this period. I still admire him for having the courage to do so.
History text books in Indonesian school needs to be improved. It's always about the black and white. Dutch is always potrayed as colonizer who brutally killed our ancestors, control the system, monopoly the economy and take all the resources. No one mentioned about how corrupted the native Indonesian tyranny, royals and politicians. Ah also, let's called it "Agresi Militer" as it is. It was an aggression (Operatie Product, Operatie Kraai, etc) did by the Dutch military. Forgive but never forget.

That was strong relevant with what happen on 17-Agt-1945. Just try to find out what happen in that moment and what the content of the Agreement. Try to understand deeply what happen in that moment
I have an important question that nobody asks: When Roosevelt stopped selling oil to the Japanese and seized their assets, the Japanese came to the Dutch in Batavia hat in hand to purchase the oil, rubber, tin and other materials they desperately needed from the Dutch East Indies. The Dutch refused the sell them oil or anything else knowing full well that war would come as a consequence. The choice was clear: trade with the Japanese and make a lot of money or go to war with them and lose it for sure and then wind up losing their lives and the Dutch East Indies colony. I believe this stupid decision was made by the Dutch government in London which was being controlled by Queen Wilhelmina who was being pressured no doubt by Roosevelt. Nobody ever talks about it. If the Dutch had supplied the Japanese with the resources they needed then the Japanese most likely would not have attacked Pearl Harbor or the Dutch East Indies or the other colonies and there would not have been a war in the Pacific. I understand that Roosevelt wanted war with the Japanese and wanted to destroy the British, French and Dutch colonies and he succeeded and made the US supreme in the Pacific. Have Queen Wilhelmina and her ministers ever been criticised or held accountable for their disastrous decisions?
Providing oil to the Japanese would give them the power to continue their destructive war in China and eventually they might've expanded to south east Asia anyway, therefore prolonging the war.
May 1940 The Dutch were invaded by Germany. Sept 1940 German and Japan had an alliance. Aug 1941 Oil exports to Japan stop. Dec 1941 Pearl Harbor. Mar 1942 Dutch East Indies attacked by Japan. I think that explains why we did not sell oil to Japan.

It is a folly to review history through the lens of today. As if we say from a platform of postmodernist perfection that we can judge the past. All humanity is guilty of territorial conquest since the Fall of Man. It's happening today with Iran's intrusions into Lebanon, Syria and Iraq. Russia's invasion of Ukraine; Indonesian occupation of West Papua. China's belt&road efforts in Africa. The 'invitation' to set up a military base and 'unarmed' police force on Malaita in the Solomons. At the same time they are trying to put a 'guilt' trip on the old colonials. Yet if you visit those countries (like PNG) while they proudly wave there flags of independance the degradation to infrastructure is disastrous. Some countries like Fiji have done much better (although their love for Britain almost matches that of Gibraltar) trendy lefties would find it hard to stir any desire for independance in Tahiti because the native Polynesians have a very high quality of life. So no, the Dutch do NOT need to apologize to Indonesia who suffered so very much more under Sukarno than they ever did under the Dutch.
After we declared independence we start nationalisation and decolonization so we rarely learn about that from that time, and also the battle of Sumatra really sour relations of Indonesia and the west for a decades that's why we almost got communist coup in the 60's
Sadly, Indonesian education has oversimplified this complex conflict into a one sided, black and white, narrative of 'purely good Indonesian vs borderline satanic Dutch', completely ignoring the overarching grayness of the conflict. Yes, what the Dutch did was horrendous and unacceptable, but what Indonesians did against Europeans, Indos, and even other Indonesians should also not be overlooked. The Netherlands doesn’t have a dark History, they were taking revenge in Indonesia not being wicked, this doesn’t excuse anything but The Netherlands is set apart from these other colonial powers and should be very proud of this fact. The Dutch didn’t colonize like England and other European Countries did, if they did colonize it was for reasons like needing stability and to feel safe while setting up a trading post for The Dutch East India Company. The colonies Nederland has presently are colonies by their own choice.
It’s a parliamentary constitutional monarchie, it’s not at all like the monarchies from back in the day. A constitutional monarch in a parliamentary democracy is a hereditary symbolic head of state who mainly performs representative and civic roles but does not exercise executive or policymaking power.
The reason in the past Indonesia did not fight Japan like the Netherlands was because Japan propagated itself as an old Asian brother with the same characteristics of Indonesia and they made the Japanese Indonesian education and political system also helped Indonesia in regards to its independence example = house of admiral maeda was used as a place for proclamation negotiations

I think the genocide committed by the Dutch should be an essential part of Dutch history education. This genocide changes the narrative of the Dutch as victims in WW2 to the Dutch also being perpetrators of genocide. The awareness that such horrific crimes have also been committed by your fellow countrymen is essential if we really do want to be prevent genocides from ever happening again, because it makes us more aware of the severity of the problem.
First I believe we should adres the meaning of the word genocide. I don't think you can call the Dutch war crimes in 1945-49 as well as the Indonesian Bersiap period (1945-6) genocide. Furthermore you will put the Dutch on a par with the nazis and that is not the case. What the Dutch did was unacceptable, but they never aimed to whipe out the 'Indonesian people' or people group as a whole. Do understand that.
@@HistoryHustle Yes, I do understand that we (yes, I'm Dutch) never tried to wipe out the Indonesian people, so if that's how you define genocide, then no, it wasn't a genocide. But some Dutchmen did willfully massacre groups of Indonesians in retribution for the acts of other Indonesians. If that isn't genocide technically, I'm fine with that, but I still think it's morally very close to a similar massacre motivated by pure racism.
The problem I try to address is that we would like to think that our fellow countrymen are better than the predominantly German Nazis, but we are capable of doing the exact same things and have come horribly close to actually doing those same things. That is fundamentally why I think history lessons about the "police actions" are important : to teach us that every country is capable of doing what the Nazis did. We're just lucky that it hasn't happened. If we don't learn that lesson, we haven't really understood how the holocaust could happen.
You're pointing out something important here. First you can argue that any circumstance can lead a people doing terrible acts. In other words: you don't have to be German to do such. This is also based on the theory written by Christopher R. Browning in his book: Ordinary Men: Reserve Police Battalion 101 and the Final Solution in Poland.
That massacring towns is an unacceptable crime, I couldn't agree more. That we need to teach further generations about this (WW2, and Indonesian War of Independene) I'm all in favor.
I do have a problem when people put the Dutch in Indonesia on a par with the nazis. The nazis acted out of an extreme racist ideology that was passed from top to bottom. I do believe most Dutch war crimes were in reaction to Indonesian (armed) resistance, not out of extreme racism. Yet, we can argue that by today's standards people back then were racist. That is another discussion. I am repeating that people that lump the Dutch ánd the nazis simply lack historical insight.

Anytime I read of 'police action' my first instinct is to assume harsh measures, not gentle peacekeeping. Precisely because I studied this part of Indonesian history extensively in school.
Something must be wrong with the Dutch history education. A Foreign Policy article ( The Dutch Are Uncomfortable With Being History’s Villains, Not Victims A refusal to confront colonial atrocities persists in the Netherlands.August 10, 2020) says that a 2019 poll in The Netherlands shows that only 6% of surveyed thought Dutch colonial rule was a shame and 50% were proud with it. Dutch history education is a failure. I think the BlackLivesMatter movement gave hope that soon or later countries will end-up face their crimes like slavery or genocides like in Indonesia etc.

Just want to say sorry that some of the Indonesians here might seem a little bit salty/confusing by giving you rude comments, some of us still hold grudges against the Dutch & Japanese because of what they did to our ancestors. Most of my friends great grandparents (and so on) who participated in war told their story about the things Netherlands did back in colonization era from generation to generation, so some Indonesians might've still carry the trauma they had to face back then. Still, the current generation are more forgiving and open than others, I hope you'll understand.

yeah the books portrayed the Netherlands as pure evil, but the Japanese not. We were helpoed by many japanese troops anyway. It was also Indonesian war cadets in japanese academies that won the war.

i am dutch and i have had at least two tests about VOC and colonization and two about indonesian war and my teacher made sure we knew what happend there (Molukse eiland uitmoorden bijvoorbeeld) but i think they still kinda pushed the opinion of the dutch being kinder then the japanese. sadly enough i chose sience and have had history for only 3 years(vwo, so 6 years)

Thank you for your videos, there doesn't seem to be much info like this readily available, especially in the West. I'm Canadian but my father was born near Jakarta in 1947. My Opa was a marine and fought the Japanese after he fled to Australia. My Oma was captured by the Japanese and survived 4 years of being in the camps. Afterwards WWII my Opa fought until 1949. My family first moved back to the Netherlands, but only stayed for a year or so and then moved to Canada.
My family was in Indonesia for more than a hundred years. We're also part Indonesian, my great Oma was biracial. I feel connected to the country and I hope to someday go there.
As for my family's history, I don't know what they were involved in specifically during the colonial period, but I can assume it wasn't good. The only stories I have are from my Opa who would tell me things as a child, and they're not something in this day and age I am proud of.

As far as I admire dutch culture and their football team, dutch colonization was still a criminal act and military aggression.
They (dutch) had contributed to form the first communist party in Indonesia which once divided our nation and turn our people to against each other.

The way i learn about our history is our people is too kind to foreigners thats why its easy for them to doing "divide et impera" in the past..
In my 70s, was in the Vietnam war, and was a history major before and after my time in the military. One of my gripes about history books is the rewriting of history by people with no connection or real experience in the events they write about. War is brutal, I know, I spent 5 years in it at a time when we had WWII like causalities.There's a lot that goes on that is hard for people to understand that have never experienced death on a grand scale. History can only be understood when looking thru the eyes of the people that created the history. Most of those people that do later write, don't put down their real emotions. What were their social norms and what they faced controls many of their actions and reactions. Few Dutch or any other civilian have any idea of what their soldiers went thru while fighting an insurrection. I'm not defending unnecessary killing.

It is pretty surprising that in the Dutch textbooks all of the pre-20th century resistance against the Dutch colonialist (fights that were conducted by various old Indonesian kingdoms/indigenous groups against the rising power of VOC or the Dutch-Indies government) are left out. The Dutch are always potrayed as pretty much the devil in most textbooks who have invaded Indonesia for 300 years and all of the people who fought against the Dutch colonials even before the conception of a united Indonesia are considered national heroes here. Also, surprisingly the Dutch war crimes during the military aggression of the Dutch isn't taught that much in the Indonesian textbooks ,they do teach you that the Dutch does attack the republic again after WWII in an attempt to retake Indonesia but they only highlight all of the fights being done by the Indonesian troops. I think this is a downside to the Indonesian perspective on history because most of the time they only highlight the heroes, important events, and the fights between the Dutch and the Indonesians but things like war atrocities by the Dutch are rarely brought up.

Essentially when the Kingdom of the Netherlands fell to the Nazis, the Dutch queen fled to Britain however she ended up in Ottawa and Pregnant at the time. IOT have her child officially "born Dutch" she was allowed to have some Dutch soil, (somehow transported with her) placed under the bed in the Ottawa Civic Hospital where her daughter Princess Margriet was born in 1943. Further it was Canadians who were largely responsible for liberating the Netherlands in 1945 as "Juno" the Canadian wing of the Normandy Invasions ended up in the Netherlands. It is for this reason that the Dutch thank Canadians each year by supplying us with thousands of Tulip bulbs which we display in our national gardens in Ottawa. They're on display now! Another fun fact about Dutch-Canadian relations is that there are approximately 1.1 million Canadians of Dutch descent as of 2016,(yours truly included) or about 3% of the total population of Canada. In the Canadian Armed Forces Canadians of Dutch descent make up a whopping 15% which is massive and the largest non-British, non-French contingent there. Again I chalk this up to Dutch pride in Canada for what we did during WWII.

Launching a EUR4,0m study about 1942-1949 war atrocities would only work if you answer the basic question “ Why Dutch returns to Indonesia in 1945 after Allies defeated Japan?” ... The Dutch tried to reinstate to its Indonesian colony, while Indonesians tried to defend its proclaimed independence.....anything that happened during that period should be seen in that context.

I'm from Dutch heritage. My father, having just come out of the second WW was drafted and sent to Indonesia as well as one of my uncles. Both of them tell a story of them fighting the English for a good part of it. They told me that the Dutch had agreed to pull out of Indonesia and hand it back to the Indonesian Government as they could see the writing on the wall for the Dutch. It was supposed to be a controlled pullout. The Indonesian Govt were concerned that it would leave a power vacuum which would encourage the English to try and take over. The Indonesian Govt did not have the capability to repel the English.
However, the English noticing this wanted to colonise Indonesia for themselves. The Dutch were fighting both the locals and the English. Some wanted the Dutch to stay, most wanted the Dutch to leave, some wanted the English, others wanted none of it. From my family's perspective it was a very messy war with no clear sides defined and/or aligned. It appears no one clearly 'won' as every group lost something. So your story books are just that.. story books.
As far as I believe the Dutch never fought the English.

My grandpa fought Brits in this battle. He was a simple farmer from Sidoarjo (near Surabaya). Battle of Surabaya (November 10, 1945) is still commemmorated as Heroes Day.

In Canadian history classes in high school, we discussed the use of (racist) propaganda and the internment of Canadians of Japanese descent during World War 2. Although I learned this over 40 years ago, I do recall a reasonable discussion of this period, even if some would argue that it did not go far enough.
It should be noted that Canadian men of Italian descent were also arrested, and, taken to labour camps in the Canadian interior. This was not taught in schools, and, is rarely acknowledged openly.
Canadians of German descent were not arrested; the economy would have ground to a halt, if 10% of the population had been removed from their homes, and, placed into camps.

I was in secondary education and I remember that even back then, we talked a lot about colonialism and the Indonesian war of independence. Both viewpoints were addressed. And both viewpoints were the truth for both sides. The Dutch back then had to restore order and safety. They were made responsible for that. And yes, that implied also that colonialism would be restored, which is of course bad. But both things were real. There was anarchy and murder on a grand scale and there was an independent republic declared. Independence, by the way, cannot be declared according to international law. Independence needs to be recognised by the rest of the world before it becomes "real". So strictly speaking the Dutch were right is saying that that was a non event. Having said that, the Dutch should just have gone in, round up all Europeans and leave. Hindsight is 20/20.

In short: it was a military action. The Dutch called it a 'police action' by making it look like a limited action (only police units were involved) so the US wouldn't complain. In the Netherlands the word 'Politionele Acties' isn't used that much in recent publications any more.

Dutch is always potrayed as colonizer who brutally killed our ancestors, control the system, monopoly the economy and take all the resources. No one mentioned about how corrupted the native Indonesian tyranny, royals and politicians.
Ah also, let's called it "Agresi Militer" as it is. It was an aggression (Operatie Product, Operatie Kraai, etc) did by the Dutch military.

There were important happen that never telling in history in most of the dutch version. On March 8, 1942 the KaliJati agreement between Nippon and Netherland. That was strong relevant with what happen on 17-Agt-1945.

I have an important question that nobody asks: When Roosevelt stopped selling oil to the Japanese and seized their assets, the Japanese came to the Dutch in Batavia hat in hand to purchase the oil, rubber, tin and other materials they desperately needed from the Dutch East Indies. The Dutch refused the sell them oil or anything else knowing full well that war would come as a consequence. The choice was clear: trade with the Japanese and make a lot of money or go to war with them and lose it for sure and then wind up losing their lives and the Dutch East Indies colony. I believe this stupid decision was made by the Dutch government in London which was being controlled by Queen Wilhelmina who was being pressured no doubt by Roosevelt. Nobody ever talks about it. If the Dutch had supplied the Japanese with the resources they needed then the Japanese most likely would not have attacked Pearl Harbor or the Dutch East Indies or the other colonies and there would not have been a war in the Pacific. I understand that Roosevelt wanted war with the Japanese and wanted to destroy the British, French and Dutch colonies and he succeeded and made the US supreme in the Pacific. Have Queen Wilhelmina and her ministers ever been criticised or held accountable for their disastrous decisions?
Providing oil to the Japanese would give them the power to continue their destructive war in China and eventually they might've expanded to south east Asia anyway, therefore prolonging the war.
May 1940 The Dutch were invaded by Germany.
Sept 1940 German and Japan had an alliance.
Aug 1941 Oil exports to Japan stop.
Dec 1941 Pearl Harbor.
Mar 1942 Dutch East Indies attacked by Japan.
I think that explains why we did not sell oil to Japan.

it is true that indonesian history lesson made for school tells us how horrible Dutch was. But I am sure enough that teachers dont teach hatred.. Dutch/ VOC ruled Indonesia for abou 350 years. Yet the book covers it so little. Little bit dissapointing. However, Indonesian has its own dark history... Post-independece, there were so many false/made up history perpetrated by the second president Suharto which is still used in Indonesian schools nowadays...

It is a folly to review history through the lens of today. As if we say from a platform of postmodernist perfection that we can judge the past. All humanity is guilty of territorial conquest since the Fall of Man. It's happening today with Iran's
intrusions into Lebanon, Syria and Iraq. Russia's invasion of Ukraine; Indonesian occupation of West Papua. China's belt&road efforts in Africa. The 'invitation' to set up a military base and 'unarmed' police force on Malaita in the Solomons. At the same time they are trying to put a 'guilt' trip on the old colonials. Yet if you visit those countries (like PNG) while they proudly wave there flags of independance the degradation to infrastructure is disastrous. Some countries like Fiji have done much better (although their love for Britain almost matches that of Gibraltar) trendy lefties would find it hard to stir any desire for independance in Tahiti because the native Polynesians have a very high quality of life.
So no, the Dutch do NOT need to apologize to Indonesia who suffered so very much more under Sukarno than they ever did under the Dutch.

The Netherlands doesn’t have a dark History, they were taking revenge in Indonesia not being wicked, this doesn’t excuse anything but The Netherlands is set apart from these other colonial powers and should be very proud of this fact. The Dutch didn’t colonize like England and other European Countries did, if they did colonize it was for reasons like needing stability and to feel safe while setting up a trading post for The Dutch East India Company. The colonies Nederland has presently are colonies by their own choice.
