    Cool Forgotten Weapons merch! shop.bbtv.com/collections/forg...
    After looking at the history and mechanics of the VP-70 yesterday, we are heading out to the range to try it out (and thanks to Trijicon for generously offering use of their range!). I am curious to see just what that 2200 rpm rate of fire is like to shoot, and whether the awful trigger is as much of a hindrance to effective burst shooting as it is to simple semiauto. So, in addition to some shooting of the VP-70M, I will also be comparing it to an MP5...
    Thanks to H&K for providing access to bring you this VP-70M!

    As far as the shot dispersion, there is a school of thought that putting multiple shots in the same hole or very near, minimizes the damage potential. The wound cavity encompasses an area larger than the diameter of the projectile so having shots that spread the damage over a larger area can create a more efficient stopping capability. Either way, getting shot is one of the best ways to have your day ruined regardless of the grouping size. Nice video as always and I agree with some of the other comments, it reminds me a lot of a Hi Point.

      More rounds per trigger pull is usually done for hit probability not damage. But this pistol seems to be based on the former not the latter based on these results. More of a magdump really.

    As garbage timer as this pistol is known for being, I’d still love to see a remake but with lessons taken from Glock, Smith and Wesson and Springfield on the trigger design. The overall outer build is a good smooth design that would be ideal for drawing from concealment and the simple blowback operation would make repair and maintenance easy as pie. Blowback obviously has is downside and it effects accuracy but it would be a good starting pistol for the average Joe (again with a better trigger design and lighter pull. Maybe a trigger pack like the TT-33 but reworked for use in the VP?)

  • @sevenproxies4255
    @sevenproxies4255 4 года назад +31

    The VP-70M is a strange contraption... On the one hand machine pistols are a less than ideal invention on their own since recoil makes them so hard to control and remain accurate in fully automatic fire (or even a 3-round burst mode), but you can still sort of see the point of them. Basically you want a pistol that can also function as a semi-auto pistol but has the option of spitting out a lot of lead in a short amount of time, in a small, pistol sized package.
    Whereas a sub machine gun like the MP5, also use pistol caliber ammo, but is more custom made for full auto control and accuracy. In turn making the weapon bigger and more bulky.
    The VP-70M on the other hand doesn't do either... It needs the attachement to get the added functionality of 3-round burst, but also end up making the pistol more bulky, unlike something like a Glock 18c or Beretta M93r. So it kind of circumvents the point of using something pistol sized when you end up turning it into some kind of carbine anyway.
    Can't say I've felt the trigger pull, but let's just say that double action is not my cup of tea.

    I've always assumed that the three round burst capability would best be applied to very close contact engagements!
    Such engagements, up to and including point blank range come down to instinctive firing without use of the sights, and in these contacts the three round burst would be preferable to semi-automatics fire.
    Whilst the shoulder stock may be useful, I wouldn't expect it to be used in close quarter engagements.

      There are actually similarities in construction. The MP5 trigger housing is also polymer with a metal trigger group inside. I don't see why the MP5 would be any more expensive in R&D/manufacturing (I could be wrong). Two more things, this was actually a pretty fair comparison as the VP70 cannot be operated in full auto without the stock, and the group Ian shot with the MP5 was okay, but there are people out there that can cut that in half without a problem.

    The G11 was built around the concept of putting 3 rounds on the same spot through a similar cyclic rate while on burst fire mode. With this much lighter but also much less powerful gun, you already have a significant muzzle climb on the first round. I won't even ask for a range video on the G-11 because the tooling to make the ammo was either scrapped long ago or is rusting away in a warehouse, but it would be interesting to see if it has the same issue.

Also with the obvious fact that the G11 was designed a decade and a half after this pistol.
