  • Hello You Tube, it’s Rob from Maxwells Grass Cutting Services, based in the North East of England.
Today’s video. My favourite lawnmower is the Honda HRX 537, a 21 inch four wheel rotary. It now four years old and won’t last forever. What would I replace it with? That is the question.
What is the perfect 19 inch - 21 inch four wheeled rotary lawn mower.
I look forward to reading your feedback, in the comments.
Thanks for watching. Please like and subscribe.
    All the very best.
Remember, when the green gold is growing, keep mowing.
    All the best.
    Rob.

Been gardening for over 30 years and all I use is Honda HRX 537. Best all round reliable, mower and it’s great for mulching. Don’t bother with roller mowers as customers are not interested in stripes unless they have a bowling green somewhere in their garden! Looks like your 537 has a few more years left in it still.

Rob speaking from experience here, if you can get another hrx537 then get one. By far the best lawnmower going. I've used them all, maybe not all but a fair few of them. Stihl, hayter, John deere, etesia, toro, cobra, ebrauer, Mountfield etc. There is no lawnmower that's as good an all rounder as the hrx. None. Honestly. On my nicer jobs with easy access I use an hrh 536 or hayter 48 pro and it gives a great finish but the hrx is a great finisher just doesn't do stripes.

If it ain't broke , still does the job keep it . Good mower that. At least keep it for back up,mine is still going after i think 7yrs. Just look after it, and it'll serve you for many years. And sod the stripes, just cut the grass and do a good job. You've been tempted by the saltex sweet shop.😊👍

I got the Makita XGT 40v 480mm lawn mower with 4 swigback hi lift blades. It cut through 2 foot tall Kikuyu like a hot knife through butter. 2nd mow hear in Australia, was close to a foot tall in very wet grass. No issues packing the catcher full. Excellent mulcher. The rear side discharge chute is good but not for overgrown grass. It tapers smaller at exit so will block easily. Got the matching blower and powerhead combo system.
Mower is about 32 kilos. I can manage lifting into boot without the batteries. Its a strain with two 8ah batteries onboard so removed them when loading/unloading.
Beats my dads 140cc rover and grandfathers Victa Classic. No contest.
On max power expect 50 minutes with two 8 ah and self propel under a good load.

It Mulches perfect, cuts high grass great and packs the bag completely full. 46cm cut and weighs 33.8 kg

I own the same mower as you. Knowing what I know now, I would be very tempted to go for it's sister; the Honda HRN 536. It's still 21", still does mulching, but slightly lighter and a smaller, more efficient engine. The height adjustment on the wheels looks a sturdier design too.

Been in the trade 40 years, mainly commercial. The 537 HRX HY is without question the best mower available as an all round machine, we mulch mainly but the convenience of being available to collect with just moving the handle and not messing about with mulch plugs or changing blades is very convenient. We run 2 and we do not service them EVER only replace the blades when needed, we take the view that it is cheaper to fix something when it fails , both mowers are used for around 30 hours per week in the season and are 5 years old with no failures or breakages the no service works for us financially.
Think you will regret buying a Wiebang from what I hear from dealers and contacts in the trade, I would stick with the HRX.

Hi Rob, thanks for the video, as a hrx537 owner for many years I'd agree it's the best 21inch all rounder. But for a perfect medium size mower I would recommend an etesia pro 46 without hesitation. That's the only medium mower I would ever use. The hrx 476 collection is absolutely terrible. A hint of damp/wet it clogs immediately due to the smaller deck and poor volume of airflow. Etesia pro 46 - it's a game changer mate

Good Morning Rob. Tbh the finish isn't as good as the hrx due to not having the rubber strip at the back, however if the blades are sharp and the grass cut at a reasonable speed the finish is definitely acceptable, I've had no complaints from any customers. I would highly recommend you having a free trial at a dealership where you can try them all out. I done that and bought a good second hand one. That's up to u mate but I wish I had bought it years ago. Hope that helps mate

Rob. No such thing as the perfect mower! They’re all a compromise, I’ve run all the top end brands over the years including the Weibang SSD which I’ve mentioned before. I’m pretty much settled on Stihl 19” 4 wheels as my main wheeled mower with the Stihl 21” roller as my stripper but have now bought the Cobra 19” pro roller with the Honda engine to replace that. Great mower now that I’ve increased the revs to speed it up. Superb finish in wet and dry, has the fan thingy that picks up everything. Great post.

Hi rob I got he estesia 46 pro about a month ago after i killed my stihl 650v hit a drain. Its really expensive but i a really liking it has a great cut wide chute awseome collection for wet grass and at the minute the leaves. And one thing you would also like having a small van is it is nice and compact, the speed up kit is a must on the self propel check out Lewis garden services he shows how too fit it. Keep running the Honda for as long as possible then blow the budget on the etesia 46. More intermiten weather next week just do what you can do, everyone wants everything done straight but you cant control the weather i have still got last cuts to do.

@lewisgriffiths694 yes the phts3 with honda engine it not light but I have ramp drop straight out of van side door. I thought the 650v would be lighter than it's was but it is a bigger machine. I have been cutting grass now for 27 years used many different mowers, then in 2009 I bought my first etesia pro51k which I still use regularly. Apart from the usual wearing parts being replaced they will run and run. Early this year I thought about replacing the oldest mower and I thought about a webang mower as a new dealer started up a few miles away from me, as I was unsure about the thing when I was looking at it in the showroom in a bid to get me to buy one the dealer said they had one for demo so I was lucky enough to use it for a couple of days. And it was absolutely rubbish compared to the etesia my 2009 machine beat it hands down. If you are not looking for one as big as the pro51 the pro46 is just as good. But at the end of the day when ever you buy a new mower you get what you want. Keep up the great videos thanks Justin

@@maxwellsgrasscuttingservices Hi Rob, I use it on a lot of domestic lawns and the finish I think is good. But it is not a mower for striped lawns when the grass is lush if you go up and down there is a bit of different shading to it. Also I don't think the wheel mark's are any more visible than you get with other 4 wheel mowers. As with other mowers keeping the blade from getting to dull helps. The blades on the etesia have a little notch on the side and when you have sharpened back to there that's when it is time to replace the blade. I have all ways found it to be good on lawns and just areas of grass. Hope this is a bit of help. Many thanks Justin

Great video, I'm thinking about an etesia pro 46 for next year, not maybe as a direct replacement for the hrx537 but as another mower for smaller lawns and the wet, the honda should be able to be fixed / maintained for a good while yet , but maybe it could be demoted should we say , still part of the team , as I always say you can never have enough back up machines , even new stuff can give trouble or have a break down

I dont do much mowing but I do 2 with a Honda HRH 536. its very heavy (at 58kg it weighs more than my assistant!). As I dont do many I let everyone else choose which mower they wanted and that was the one left as they didnt like the weight. Im happy to put up with the weight as its the most reliable mower we have.

    @trucker9462 9 месяцев назад +2

Rob. Your HRX will last for years. If its not using oil, and the drive is strong theres nothing wrong with it, anything else can be easily serviced/replaced. Give it a full engine service, take the wheels off and grease the axles, replace the cables, and it'll be as good as new. If you are looking at a replacement front line mower to reduce the workload of the HRX have a look at the HRN the top model has a 170 cc engine, blade clutch, only two levers for wheel adjustment, mulching lever, and variable speed, they are priced around £800. Good luck and all the best.

Agree with a lot of these comments. I’d go for the HRX537 again…..but there is a caveat, Rob…..I have a Stihl 756 which is a bit heavy for smaller gardens, especially when the ground is damp and soft. I took your advice and bought a HRX and since then, the stihl hasn’t seen daylight. The HRX is better in almost every way except, there is a live product recall for the Honda engine fitted to some of the HRXs which my dealer apparently wasn’t even aware of (but that’s another story for another day, Honda dealer selling a brand new machine with a live recall outstanding on it!) relating to a compression relief valve. Just make sure that either, the recall work has been carried out or that the engine number is not on the affected list. But other than that….when it comes to a 4 wheel, lightweight, durable lawnmower for the jobbing gardener, I don’t think there is a machine which shines better.

its not the mower its how people use the mower keeping the blades sharp buy 3 blades (like buying pars of shoes ) keep them sharp and rotate regular ,very few people do this , the difference in lawn cut is massive , also the build up of muck under the deck /bag , as per your video Does Honda do high lift blades ? weibang have them, great for cutting in the wet Great video have a great weekend

I'm in the same position, had mine about the same time "Bags a bit turn on the corners" thinking of just getting a new cover for it. It's still a good mower really but sometimes you feel like you need another toy to play with. I was thinking of the Stihl 655VS but you saying the Stihl doesn't quite leave as good a cut Puts a little doubt in my mind. Decisions Decisions🤔😂 My son's got the Weibang & it's heavy , the handle broke on the turning "not sure if it was because of the weight" Who knows, probably just a one off.

Maybe stick to what you know and like, you know tho I'll say the pro 46. If I've said it once.....they may be expensive but mine do thousands of hours, do tens of thousands pounds worth of work, hardly ever let you down and after 4/5 solid years you can sell on for a couple of hundred quid or keep for rough jobs. Try a demo possibly if they do for that size mower. I've heard mixed reviews on the weibang but should try one at some point I guess. Enjoy the down time 👍

My best mower `ever' was the SABO, both 47cm and 53cm. If you wanted to cut regular in the great British weather, those mowers would cut long wet grass clean. The fan assisted blade and `no spout' design of bag meant no deck blockage till the bag was full. They got taken over by John Deere who then sidelined the non commercial deck ( which was lighter ), only keeping the great deck design on the commercial steel deck lined heavy machine. They also made it impossible to get replacement Kawasaki engines for my existing fleet of aging Sabo's. Needless to say I've never forgiven, or would ever buy John Deere products again. Etesia had a similar deck design, but again it was the weight that put me off. I found the Honda HRX 537 when they came out, liked the design, engines and the mulching option and the weight but knew they were never going to be great on wet grass. But having been in the business for over thirty years I picked up enough knowledge to know how to operate to minimise that failing. Like you said, keep the bag clean, scoop out the deck regularly, alter the cut height and forward speed and the finish is just the same. I'm on my forth machine, I bought another one earlier than planned just in case they became unavailable ( the other three are still working, just not reliable enough for my business, one has a hydrostatic fault, low oil, which i could fix but the one downside of the Honda, like most modern vehicles is to get to that one part you basically have to take the whole machine apart, and that takes time ... and time is better spent making the money ... for a new machine ). My advise for what its worth, buy another HRX while you can as you know what it is capable of in work and not out of a glossy brochure. You can then put off what to get next for at least another four years.

Rob. You know I sing the praises of Weibang. I love my 53ssd shaft drive. But if I where you I wouldn't get the one your talking about. I've owned one and taking that cover off underneath is a pain! It's easy. But it's a pain. Thankfully. I don't have that problem with mine being shat drive. My advice then. Keep what you've got. I'd be very surprised if its really coming to the end of its life. Rust will kill your mower before the engine dies. Even if Honda are no longer producing new machines. Parts will be available for older machines for many, many years to come. This approach is the cheapest and best option in my view.

    • @maxwellsgrasscuttingservices

I wouldn't swap it for any mower but its slowly on its way out , I probably will replace it with a HRX537 looks ideal and similar to my JDeere . I'd stick with the Honda for now if I were you. Its been the worst year ever for the weather never lost so many cuts , my dad been doing it for 40+ years he's never seen a grass cutting season like it.

I mainly cut small to medium size lawns and I have heard the Honda 476 does not pick up well in the wet due to the smaller deck. Should I get the Honda 537 HY or the 476 HY? Any advice would be great?????????????

    • @maxwellsgrasscuttingservices

Do you have the 476 rear roller?
I find that the Honda collects fine as long as the blade is sharp and the bag is kept clean.
Yes it struggles on soaking wet grass. The stihl models collect better but the finish in wet grass isn’t great.

I was told by a gardener whose been in the game for many years that Honda has reduced the revs on their engines as a contribution to reducing emissions. Also by reducing revs this results in the mower not picking up as well as you are not getting the same vacuum effect from the slower engine….does anyone know if this is true?

    • @maxwellsgrasscuttingservices
      @maxwellsgrasscuttingservices  9 месяцев назад

I have heard the same, Honda rpm is usually around 2900, if you increase them to 3200 the mower preforms better. However I am no expert please speak to your local lawn mower mechanic. I hope that helps.
