    Ever since Sony did the last firmware update which had “performance stability” that pretty much fixed the overheating. I’ve used mine in Mexico and san Diego both on very hot days and never even got the warning light

    Thanks for showing this option to others but who in their right mind would even buy a zv body with plans to rig it heavier than an a7s/fx3 haha. I sold my caged a7s3 got zv and I'm LOVING the smaller/lightweight footprint. I now want to sell my 24mm gm f1.4 and buy the 24mm f2.8 you showed just cause of how compact it looks!

    Which fan level did you have it on for your tests? What was the ambient temperature of the room? Basic details would help a lot.

    Hi Phillip,
    Thanks for the video.
    I have this for the R5 and have made extensive tests with all the overheating issues from this cam since it came out in 2020. I won’t get into it but Canon two years later removed some of their crippling except the 30min recording limit which can’t be more annoying.
    Anyhow, the latter drove me to add Sony but learned to enjoy both system. Just have to switch off my muscle memory when switching system.
    Firstly, the lack of 1/4” threads on bottom of full cage is probably due to them wanting to stay slim design at bottom because the plate that holds the active cooling fan is taking up this place and I assume if you drill a hole there, it’s not going to be stable enough.
    Alternatively, I am waiting for the 1/4” plate that Tilta sells for the R5 that if you go with no cage, you can use this and it acts the same because the way they made the design is the 1/4” plate has a swivel and you just adjust it and it also slides in and out as you’ve shown.
    The only thing I’m not sure of is the Sony active cooling fan has additional height to this fan because Sony ZV-E1 and other newer models designed the LCD with a bevel on the bottom so when you open it (from lower right hand side to left), there is a carved out space for your fingers to open the LCD screen from bottom right side, instead of the Sony A7S3 where it opens the LCD screen from the top right side.
    Anyhow, wasn’t sure if the 1/4” plate used for the R5 would work so I bought the Sony ZV-E1 half cage instead as it looks like it has 1/4” mounts on bottom and not on sides without adding the additional ARCA-compatible plates (based on DJI standards as they specify).
    The advantage I see with the half cage is: 1) it curves to the full length of the bottom of the camera so you don’t need that additional hand grip (more weight) but also now your pinky finger is not hanging like the full cage; 2) the cold shoe is not on top but on the side of the top left side. Therefore if you add a Smallrig cold shoe adapter with wind muff (when outside and windy), this wind muff doesn’t look like a toupee, more normal but the hot shoe has the wind muff covering the speaker grill on right side and left side is the cold shoe. This allows for adding lights or external shotgun mics without hitting the cage frame on top; and 3) it’s lighter and cheaper than the full cage but functions even better (at least for me)
    As far as the overheating results on the R5, I got roughly double the recording times published by Canon and probably because it has the magnesium alloyed body which dissipate heat better in theory.
    You can also improve the recording times if using a dummy battery or open up the ports on a run and gun pinch or for long form. I will need to see if adding an external recorder that it can run for hours as it did on the R5. But for run and gun shoots, this is better solution than the one I got on Aliexpress using velcro which you cannot close the LCD screen without removing the active cooling fan.
    As far as small footprint and keeping things light, I am waiting for Power Junkie v2 power adapter using Sony’s NPF batteries. It has one advantage over the Tilta is that the USBC port can power 9V and 2.5A so on my R5C, to shoot 8K60fps raw, it needs 9V and 3A which at 2.5A, it still works. It is a PD port like Titlta but exceeds the power output of 18W to 22.5 which is enough for my needs.
    Lastly for the Tilta active cooling fan (the R5 version), it’s weird that I can only power it with an external power source that had a USBA male (to power source) and USBC (to fan). I tried all power sources (PD and non-PD, high-end and low-end powered cables) that was USBC to USBC and it simply doesn’t work. So not sure the supplied USBC to USBC cable that Tilta provides, doesn’t show anywhere what is the power required and what type of cables. Generally, engineering and products driven companies are good at designing electronics but poor at communication and this is one of them. But they deliver great and innovative products and always late and/or delayed though. The prices has also gone down to earth for both Sony and Canon as originally I paid $165.00 and it didn’t look like many people bought or reviewed it thoroughly. Good to see them adjust their pricing to more accessible position

    • @nomad0714
      @nomad0714 Год назад

      Well if continuous shooting on a cold start yes this is overkill, but when you have everything else on and shooting for awhile then you’ll want to have that additional headroom and peace of mind to not have to worry that it shutdown and be SOL.
      Also, it’s not overheating technically (for consumer protection, getting hot to the touch and dropping it, preventing lawsuits, and also for longevity of the electronic components inside), as reason why Sony has two modes: 1) default standard handheld mode; and 2) tripod high temp mode which they assume is not held held as the hand touching more than 40degC, depending on if a person has callus on their hands or not, he/she may drop it on the touch.
      I want to see once the “overheating warning” comes on, how long Sony will allow before forcing full shutdown. And what would be the recovery time allowed and/or needed.

    Thank you sooo much for the video. It solved my problem. I was looking into zve1 or a700 for specific one reason: auto-framing during recording symposium presentations. No other Sony camera has this function. Only downside was that both cameras have overheating issues obviously these were not built for long recordings. It would have been great if fx3 or fx30 had autoframing function but they don’t. This fan will solve the issue when I purchase zve1 with it. 👍🙏❤️

    Ty for the fairly objective review!
    This is a hard sell imo now that you can get used A7SIII for under $3,000, investing in this system gets your ZVE1 closer to this price and weight of the A7SIII/FX3, takes away from the compact nature of the camera in the first place...... (cage + fan + external power source).Oh, and you get a loud fan that is picked up on audio. and for only 7 more minutes of 4k 120? and your numbers with the fan matched the numbers that other users got with no fan in similar room temp.

    • @PhillipSkraba
      @PhillipSkraba  Год назад +1

      Oh no, I did tests before and this basically doubled run time in most circumstances. I did this for fun and educational reasons, I'd personally NEVER use it. I did it to show others that there is this option. The cage though, if it had a 1/4 20" in the middle, that would make it perfect. As for 120fps, who in the world films in slow motion for more than a burst, you plan, you film, you don't just let it fly for 10 minutes. So my test on 120fps is just to show that if you forget to turn it off, it'll still work for 20 mins.
