I'm Brazilian and the team that I support here is Corinthians, who is also sponsored by Nike, since 2003, and this, alongside the deal with Brazil and players like Ronaldo and Ronaldinho, made me desire products from Nike, I used to play in the streets wearing nike football boots and I still a consumer to this day. Great video!
I like the channel, but this time some information was misleading and the rest was pretty much surface information. Having elections in the same year as World Cup is mere coincidence and in no such way "Nike made Brazil internationally famous". Marketing sure helps, but sympathy comes from decades of success and disruption - the Seleção showed the world how a developing country was able to beat richer rivals again and again (and again, and again, and again). This hits close to home. I started following Brazil and football in general after I came across the Nike ads featuring Ronaldinho. My first encounter with Joga Bonito ❤️.
Jesse Owens didn't have a deal with adidas but with the Dassler Brothers who later founded adidas and PUMA respectively. When Owens was active (in 1936), adidas didn't exist yet.

Great video The advertising campaigns that Nike does with the Brazilian team are always a big thing in Brazil. Everyone watches and talks about them. Especially during the world cup, we re-watch again all the ad-campaigns because they are great
Wow.. That is absolutely incredible. I'm in my 30s and I always thought Nike was big. I grew up around it as I was getting older. But to think back In 94 there was no nike sponsor seems so shocking to me. My first memory of the world cup was the 02 Japan & Korea. Great work on this video. More educational than I thought
I'm Brazilian and I confirm EVERYTHING! all of us here in Brazil think that that match against France was bought so that our team would be champions in the next cup, but what makes Brazilians angry is not the question of the match against France being sold, which makes us angry and the fact that we would win the 2 world cups if the Zidane x Ronaldo World Cup wasn't sold. 🇧🇷 Ah a video suggestion: talk about the Brazilian clubs that started to be bought by European companies, Red Bull bought Bragantino, John Textor bought Botafogo, Ronaldo bought Cruzeiro and rumors that an Italian company is going to buy a club in the interior of São Paulo. ❤️
All of us ? ahahaah Most people don't think much about it. I would even grant the possibility of Nike pressuring Ronaldo to go in since he was their main product, but saying they bought it its just silly. The doctor said he could play, so he did. You can't even say they lost because of it, France wasn't weak either and I doubt they wouldn't be studying the curret World Champions upgraded with the best player in the world even before the torunament started.
I was a young teen when the 98 World Cup happened and I remember that there was a big story about Ronaldo, something along the lines of how he didn't feel well before the final and that it was rumored that Nike made him play. (I made this comment before I watched the video btw, I wasn't sure if this incident would be covered in the video :D)
He actually did have a seizure the night before the match. It scared the whole team to a point where some teammates were crying and no one was able to sleep. Doctors couldn't find anything wrong with him so he begged the staff to play the final. As a brazilian, I recognize that France was the better side during that World Cup and would probably win it anyway, but a 3x0 win over Brazil can only be truly understood when you take into account what happened the night before.
I'm from Brazil and I see some weird things about Brazil because of Nike. I watch videos in English and Spanish and it is common people saying that "joga bonito" is a popular expression in Brazil. The 1990s is when the national team players all played in europe - I used to say that it was no longer the Brazilian team, it was the European team of Brazilians. Never was. The song was used in the Nike commercial for the '98 World Cup. The commercial thing creates a collective imagination that does not relate to the real world. Crazy stuff.
As a brazilian I remember this game and the controversy at the time. It was never properly explained what happened to Ronaldo for him not to play the game and I remember the team not playing like the usual in the final.
One of my first futbol shirts was the Brazilian one in 1997. The one they used for the Copa America and Confederations Cup of 1997. It was Nike and it had Ronaldo’s name and number 9. Also had a Italy Nike shirt used in the Euro 96. Back then Italy didnt show the brand on their shirts, but they were Nike. This one didnt have no name or number. I wished it was Paolo Maldini number 3. From those days when i was 7 or 8 Nike became my favorite brand. Air Force 1’s, Jordans, Futbol shirts. Crazy memories
Around that time, Nike signed three south american powerhouses: Chilean club Colo-Colo was the first ever South American football deal that Nike did in 95, just to test the waters. Then Brazil came, and around the time Maradona retired for good in 97, Nike signed Boca Juniors. Nike's association with Colo-Colo was cut in 2002 when the club entered administration, and Boca's ties with the swoosh ended just a few years ago. Now both teams are signed with Adidas on way less money. Also, Nike wanted to conquer the South American market with very aggressive moves: In the middle of Wimbledon 1997, they signed Marcelo Rios, the first ever South American world number one from Adidas, and put him with signature footwear straight away.
Brazilian here: 1:37 that part happens because our Constitution says when our nation team is in the Word Cup, everyone has the right to watch. So basically, when Seleção is playing, no one can work (and schools can't have classes either). Just the essentials services is allow it to continue working.
u better hope, by 2026 its been 24 years since brazil get into a wc final. they dont win it next time, they r well on the track of 36 years like that of argentina before they get their 3rd world cup
who else was sharing those videos throught infrared using their phones back then... you couldnt move the phones because they lost the infrared signal xDDD... btw the pepsi and coca cola football ad were OP too
I clearly remember the deal was 400 millions or 40 million per year…at the time was a lot of money…most national teams were getting between 4 to 10 per year..and that was big news.Romario and Bebeto were the stars at that time…Ronaldo came around 97..in 94 he was playing for cruzeiro and moving to PSG following Romario steps.
Just a nitpick, the Brazillian national team is not called "A selecção". That's just portuguese for "selection" aka "team". It's not a nickname like "Die Mannschaft" for the German NT. The nickname for Brasil would be "Seleção Canarinho" I think. But other than that, amazing video. I miss a strong Brazil team like in the early 2000s. Definitely the golden era of football for me. Nobody played like Brasil, it was a joy to watch. Cheers from Portugal.
Lol, even I had no clue as a Brazilian about the whole congress thing but here's how I think it went: "Should we try to come up with solutions to our country's unbelievably high violent crime rate? Try to help lift the poor out of poverty??Reform the economy??? Nah, let's investigate why our country lost a world cup that occurred three years prior lmao"
Another amazing video! I'm Brazilian and I think it's important to point out who was very essencial for the investigations: Andrew Jennings, who unfortunately passed away a few days ago. Besides, it's interesting how Nike managed to put in the mind that Brazilian football is beautiful, but the truth is very different, even more talking about the titles of 94 and 2002... Congratulations for the incredible work!
The picture that Brazilian football is beautiful comes from waaay before. It comes from 1970, just when Brazil won dominantly his third World Cup and had a great national team. Many do believe that it was the best national team ever in the world, in any generation

Brilliant! Always brilliant Quality Uploads.🙏🏽
Thanks, Lewellyn! 😁

🧡 We don't mind hearing it 😅
Congrats 🤝 amazing content
Thank you 🙌
Those joga bonito commercials were epic every body wanted a total 90 ball and boots
I still consider those Joga Bonito ads to be some of the best ads of all time.
Happy New Year’s God bless
"I don't know. But whoever it was didn't do a good job" 😂🤣😂🤣 Phenomeno ❤️
Absolutely detest huge corporations like Nike. Morally corrupt, money hungry wolves and nothing more.
Pele is not just statistical friend. Pele has all that makes football exciting.
4:38 the 2002 infamous world Cup was in Korea/japan
Same people.
I feel like we still don't have an answer on the whole Ronaldo interrogation thing, lol.
We really don't
As always, great video
Excellent video. If we win the world cup this year, Nike will be very happy haha
They definitely will 😅
Nice and very interesting video!
Keep up the good work of making videos of things we never knew we want to know about!! Amazing channel!
Really good video... Waiting for more
More on the way 😉
His Inter Milan manager said it well: "They destroyed him (Ronaldo) in 1998 world cup."
I am not sure what he was referring to.
i loved all those ads in the early 2000’s
Joga bonito was my favorite. Ah! The good ol days.
A classic! 🇧🇷
More videos please, love them!!
Thank u Brother..,I love your content so much....Love from Kenya (Africa)
You're so welcome! 🇰🇪
You should come up with more videos frequently plz
You dont have to say it was fake now you have spoiled my childhood
Bro how tf do you edit so well
Had to stop the video to have a good laugh when I listened to McEnroe complaining while you presented him LOLOLOOLOLOL
Laughter pauses are recommended ⏸ 😅
If you can make a video on cricket, it would really make a difference in your channel
Brazilian here: 1:37 that part happens because our Constitution says when our nation team is in the Word Cup, everyone has the right to watch. So basically, when Seleção is playing, no one can work (and schools can't have classes either). Just the essentials services is allow it to continue working.
Wait, so watching the Seleção is basically a consitutional right in Brazil!?
@@AthleticInterest Absolutely not. Amazing video! Keep up with the good work!
You are the THE CHANNEL ON FOOTBALL
Thank you, Devavrat!
Never realised before that Brazil won the two world cups held in North America. Excited for 2026 now.
u better hope, by 2026 its been 24 years since brazil get into a wc final. they dont win it next time, they r well on the track of 36 years like that of argentina before they get their 3rd world cup
who else was sharing those videos throught infrared using their phones back then... you couldnt move the phones because they lost the infrared signal xDDD... btw the pepsi and coca cola football ad were OP too
I clearly remember the deal was 400 millions or 40 million per year…at the time was a lot of money…most national teams were getting between 4 to 10 per year..and that was big news.Romario and Bebeto were the stars at that time…Ronaldo came around 97..in 94 he was playing for cruzeiro and moving to PSG following Romario steps.
Good Research = Good Content 🥰
The effort is worth it! 🙂
Is this narrated by Klaus from American Dad? Glad I found this channel, very interesting.
🐟 Maybe…
Just a nitpick, the Brazillian national team is not called "A selecção". That's just portuguese for "selection" aka "team". It's not a nickname like "Die Mannschaft" for the German NT. The nickname for Brasil would be "Seleção Canarinho" I think.
But other than that, amazing video. I miss a strong Brazil team like in the early 2000s. Definitely the golden era of football for me. Nobody played like Brasil, it was a joy to watch. Cheers from Portugal.
Na verdade nos referimos ao time como "a seleção" mesmo, parece simples mas é a realidade. Abraços do Brasil.
Lol, even I had no clue as a Brazilian about the whole congress thing but here's how I think it went:
"Should we try to come up with solutions to our country's unbelievably high violent crime rate? Try to help lift the poor out of poverty??Reform the economy??? Nah, let's investigate why our country lost a world cup that occurred three years prior lmao"
what program do you guys use to edit your video s?
But I agree that Nike had a huge influence on how a whole generation sees Brazilian football
Você tá doido? O futebol brasileiro é inigualável desde Pelé
@@thguzzo17 Belíssimo argumento.
God bless 1:38
pls also post how these videos are edited in software. i really wanna learn about these creations
You guys are amazing
