- As we continue our tribute to the legendary Mary Tyler Moore, what better way to do so than to play the opening title sequence from her award winning series, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, on the night that she made famous - Saturday night, 9pm, CBS television.
Simply the best.

Enjoy.
Most people don't remember the backstory. She was from the Iron Range and busted her butt putting her fiance through medical school. He graduated and dumped her. She didn't want the whole town feeling sorry for her so she moved to Minneapolis.
Damn!!! Such a dark beautiful story
That's right
Never knew the back story to this, thanks!
I moved to Minneapolis to go to school after a similarly crappy narrative. Like Mary, I did a lot of self-discovery in Minneapolis. So I feel a sort of camaraderie with Mary Richards to this very day.
I didn't realize this Thanks for sharing
The BEST version of this theme song.
That is an abbreviated. The original was better , longer. Had to be there, watching it live on prime time, 71-77
@@mariocisneros911 This IS the original, Used in Season 1. Seasons 2-7 are a different lyric.
Filthy McNasty Perhaps it was used because they weren’t sure if it wasn’t going to be a hit.

Here's the full acoustic version from 1970.

Mary Tyler Moore was that woman who everyone fell in love with.
God Rest her soul.
One of the greatest theme songs ever. It just encapsulated her character so well.
👍
Agreed, young woman on her own, and discovering new adventures.😊😊
I was a kid when this show aired...too young to remember the first few seasons, but my parents watched each new episode every week. By the last couple seasons, I would lie on the floor, watching it with them and laughing along with them. Never forgot this theme song, or the great characters. I realized after Betty White died that there wasn't a single cast member left alive, and it just filled me with such sadness and nostalgia for a simpler happier time. I've started watching the entire series from the beginning now.
My sister commented recently when I told her I too have been revisiting MTM on Hulu. "I miss that show being current.Amen.
John Amos, who played Gordy Howard on MTM, is still alive as of this comment posting, aged 83. Lisa Gerritsen, who played Phyllis' daughter Bess, is also still around at age 65 (however, I know she was only recurring).
Except Lisa Garritson who played Bess Phylisses daughter and John Amos who played Gordy.
@@VaultMasterDBT I should have specified *major* cast members. Gordy only appeared on about 12 episodes so I don't consider John Amos or Lisa Gerritsen as central characters.
@@VaultMasterDBT I thought Lisa would still be around. Agreed John also.
The innocent years. They always get us right there.
Yes they do yes they do
I know
anybody else feels like tearing up
It's so hopeful and happy.😊😊
One of the best show openings ever, and one of the shows ever. I am so glad that I was around to watch the show when it originally aired, I love the 70's.
Me too! The most memorable years of my life were in the 70s, from the age of 5 to 14. Back then, I never knew I'd miss those days like I do.
I agree .....and it seemed so modern for 1970.....
That wool peacoat and beret really suits Mary
ME TOO !!!!
Hate to rain on anybody's parade, but have a look at this from several years earlier . . . ruclips.net/video/Zoh1LGADKI8/видео.html
@@alanmorris7669 I was born in ‘65 as well. We were lucky enough to catch the tail-end of the good old days. I’ve always thought so, anyway.
You might just make it after all!!
She did it!!
RIP MTM.
I love the way they evolved the theme from season 1 onward. "How will you make it on your own?" and "You might" to "Who can turn the world on with a smile" and You're going to." This show really captured the spirit of the times.
I grew up in Belfast in a super traditional household so for much of my childhood, I assumed I would grow up, get married, and have loads of children like my mum. One night I went to the kitchen for a snack and turned on the television and this show was on and naturally, I had never heard it. It had a confident, beautiful woman owning her own life, dressing to the nines, pursuing a career and doing it all on her own. I've been mesmerised ever since.
Truly lovely comment, Freya. Best wishes to you.
Never knew MTM was aired in the UK!
Well. if this were real life it wouldn't have been that hard for her to do this. Think about it, everyone just loved Mary and she fed off that adoration and attention. Now if she had been fat and homely instead of thin and pretty, this would really have been an underdog story of a single female earning a living with the odds stacked against her.
The real MTM was not really a feminist. She loved being a mother and a housewife. My mother looked just like her and gave up a show biz career for children and never regretted it. Women should be in the home.
@@MeadeSkeltonMusic I agree. The first thing I thought of when I read this "lovely comment" was.... "Aw yes, the programming worked." For her and a generation with her. And the results can be seen throughout the western world.
Mary certainly did turn the world on with her smile and so much more . What a classy lady she was. ♥️😀❤️
I love this opening because you see Mary getting a surprise going away party. People don't do those things anymore. People just send texts or emails. You're lucky if you get a card nowadays. Years ago you could throw a party together last minute and everyone would be able to come. Today people are just too busy and not interested.
You are actually right. When I left my job in 2002, I got a surprise party, a going-away gift that everyone signed and everyone showed up, even people who didn’t work that day, even people I am pretty sure didn’t particularly like me. Where I work now, if someone leaves (even pre-pandemic), that is it. They leave and are pretty much never spoken about again.
Yes, the current world completely SUCKS.
I was at a job 1990-2000. When I got a big nothing burger. Obvious that leaving was the right move.
Back then when you left someplace you were really gone. Now it's like...you're still virtually around with all the messaging and online availability.
@@MensAsses33 And it has since the 90's slithered in. Worst decade of last century to usher in the complete and total crap of now.
I been very lucky to met Mary Tayler Moore in two luxury boutiques in Beverly Hills and New York and help her with her shopping needs. R.I.P MTM
RIP, Jessica.
That gave me goosebumps! Brought me back to a time in my childhood…. Mary was a phenomenal role model for young girls !!!!!!
And gay men like me.

I always play this theme song on the day I’m moving house to a new city alone just like Mary did in the show, it’s like a tradition and it always perks me up and motivates me 😊
Thank you for the comment... we agree. For whatever reason, every time we hear this theme song and watch the opening credits to the MTM Show, we get a good feeling inside. This show was/still is a very special show. - staff

Um. I'M DOING THIS FROM NOW ON!
@@viccolantonio1691 Do you remember when John Amos came back to visit the news room? He left to work on a national news show. Ted was bugging him so John started bragging about all the perks he received working on a national news show. Ted nearly passed out. That was so funny.😊😊😊
@hmm-zoolol yes i remember it was very funny but i can top that one. Go to youtube and type in the search engine ted baxter greatest moment. Ted Baxter flipped a cake to a TV critic face played by eric braeden.
No other TV theme song touches my heart❤ like this one😊👍
Indeed...😉
This one along with The Bob Newhart Show opening theme.
Me too!
I love this show because I grew up in Minneapolis in the early seventies and it reminds me of my youth.
The theme from "Gidget" ...
The woman with the scarf behind Mary Tyler Moore (at 0:50) was Hazel Frederick who was shopping that day and got into that scene just by chance. Mary Tyler Moore referred to her as "her co-star."
It just never gets old and it seems to be everybody's theme song the way we go through life
This original opening is hopeful and wistful in a way that the better known version is not. I loved discovering this some years ago in the earliest days of the interwebs, and wish MTM had kept it.
I like both versions, and I think each suited its time during the show. The original needed to set the story of Mary moving to the big city to start a new life for herself--and ends with "you might just make it after all." Later on, as she had established herself in this new life and new career, it was updated to reflect her success, and the ending line of "you're gonna make it after all" reflects her success in this new life. I think both are great and each one lets the audience know where she is on her personal and professional journey.
God take me back and do it all over again !
Best theme song ever! In the 1960s and early 1970s, she sure was beautiful!
It's great, but Hawaii Five-O has the best theme song.
Hey....you might be right. I forgot about the Hawaii Five-O theme!
Inside and out. She faught her demons and came out squeaky clean. Sadly she's gone but she left us this treasure that will inspire millions for years to come.
She looks like my mom
@@MeadeSkeltonMusic Your mom must have been very pretty then!
This is my life theme song, and the song I'm Every Woman is my battle cry. That and Peace Train. Lol 😆😁👍
Played this for our older daughter at her sister’s sweet sixteen. Fast forward and she’s been in the Navy nine years. This song always reminds me of my brave kid.
When I was a little boy in the 1990's I would watch this on TV Land every night. I had quite the crush on Mary Tyler Moore.
Best TV theme song ever. One of the best TV sitcoms as well.
Whoever cast this show is a genius! MTM, Ed Asner, Ted Knight, Betty White, Doris Cleacmen,Gavin McCloud! Greatest cast for a show of all time! Hands down!
Ethel Winant was the CBS exec. in charge of casting... she was an incredibly gifted, smart woman who was key to putting in place that stellar cast of The Mary Tyler Moore Show.
We have a series of videos here at Television Vanguard from the past year or so that provide more detail on the important impact Ms. Winant had on the MTM Show. Hopefully these additional videos will provide you more details on the casting of the show. Thank you for watching. Television Vanguard staff
Don't forget the fabulous Valerie Harper as Rhoda. I loved her.
Still my theme song since I was a kid and I dont care what anyone says.
Me too. This song has never left me at 46. And I still cant sing it all the way through without getting choked up. I will sing this to my daughter's when they are starting their own lives. I hope it will give them strength when they need it.
Me to a kid that loved that song
It had such a feel good factor and of course it quickly became the 'must watch' tv show, which we all loved. I wish I could go back to those times.
I absolutely love the last 10 seconds where she runs across the street and then her twirl in slow motion before she throws her hat. The joy on her face just makes one smile and we get to see it longer. In the later seasons they jammed in so many other scenes that the famous hat throw looked rushed.
Man, just watching this opening with the mono sound and old looking film makes it feel like what 1970 was like.
Better for sure
I love this version and intro of this song Mary was a good role model for young ladies growing up in this evil world because growing up and being grown is tough in this world and everything motivational and positive we all need us women and men
I looked up to her as a kid watching this show every week on tv. Rest in peace Mary.
Song brings back very fond memories. I remember the Mary Tyler Moore show. We gathered around the TV set to watch it. So wonderful
This was in reruns when I was a child and I never realized what a beauty she was.
These 70's intro songs remind me of the good ole days.......that I missed because I was born in 75'.
I love this original opening theme!...and seeing the details of time gone by..the 1970 Minneapolis skyline; the mailboxes with the old Post Office Department logo....
Wonder what happened to that lady with the kerchief over Mary's right shoulder when she throws her hat in the air.
@@andrewunjo158 I have wondered the same thing about the old lady with the kerchief for years, too! But then I found this incredible RUclips video. Watch this awesome link because it just might answer your question! ruclips.net/video/iPDEIyOweQo/видео.html
@@andrewunjo158 She was IDed years ago. She had no idea what was going on and why this woman was throwing her hat into the air.
Mary Tyler Moore had a brilliant cast. Everyone was a star in their own right. The show was so rich in human content that it generated spin-offs (i.e. Lou Grant, Rhoda, Phyllis). The writers were superb. The musical themes were excellent. The specifically-timed musical interludes were equally outstanding. Listen to the one on season 1 episode 3 (Bess, You is My Daughter Now) 8:40- 10:17. Incredible!
Wow, Minneapolis looked so vibrant. This made you curious and wanna visit back then. Now every city in America is the same Ole Story. .
One of the most beautiful girls ever.
You really did turn the World on with your smile. Godspeed, Mary.
Damn hoss
This was a Saturday evening past time for me and my sibling. Great times.
I love when the orchestra kicks in 👍
Definitely touches the inside
Nostalgia is a Beautiful thing
It copies the opening of "That Girl", with a hidden camera following the heroine around a city (New York in "That Girl, here Minneapolis) Always interesting to note the reactions of the bystanders, especially that of an old dame with a kerchief and possibly curlers underneath staring at Mary in the final freeze frame..
I live close to and/or work near where a lot of the opening scenes were filmed over the years...alot has changed but quite a bit of the scenery is still recognizable
Yes, the old Nicollet Mall. I sure miss the days of the big, downtown department stores: Dayton's & Donaldson's in Minneapolis, Field's & Carson's in Chicago, Hudson's in Detroit, etc.
Mary Said she hated that big heavy wig but I thought it was her hottest look lol had no Idea it was a wig!
No way, really? I just thought it was her thick hair grown long.
CBS (and, Mary I think) didn’t want her looking like Laura Petrie thus the fall (wig). Mary hated it & got rid of it before Season 2. Wise choice.
@@jad8123 - she wore the fall for 2 seasons
I actually thought it was her best look as well…such a beautiful and classy woman…..incredibly sexy without having to strut around half naked like so many women today.
Mary admitted to wearing hair pieces on the Oprah reunion episode. I always thought Mary's hair color seemed tinted far too dark and flat in tone in the first season, or maybe it was the lighting/film quality of the time.
Currently watching the entire series 50 years later
I love it when she throws her hat in the air i remember watching her when I was a kid
I've always loved the old lady in the background, who stops to watch just as Mary throws her hat up.
Her name was Hazel Frederick. Mary called her her co star. They met up in the mid 90's at Mary's book signing. She died in 1999.
My life right now...thanks Mary..for the Inspiration ❤❤
Yes beautiful woman. Great show and never gets tired of watching it.
Love this woman!!!!! Rest in sweet heavenly peace, wonderful lady.:-)
I grew up with her! That's how much I miss her.
I remember when I saw this Opening Sequence and thinking how brave she was to go halfway across the country on her own without Family or Friends. I realized she was just moving to a New Part of Minneapolis. She and Prince are probably it's two most famous Citizens.
I meant to say Minnesota. I live in Canada and sometimes I get the States mixed up.
Who can turn the world on with her smile?
Who can take a nothing day
And suddenly make it all seem worthwhile?
Well, it's you, girl, and you should know it
With each glance and every little movement you show it
, no need to waste it.
(You can have the town), why don't you take it?
You're gonna make it after all.
This song reminds me of childhood sitting in front of the tv at my grandparents house in the mountains. I now have that old tv at my house that no longer works but it's a beautiful tv. Love this show even now. ❤️More than 50 years later.
I always Loved this show. I've had a crush on Mary Tyler Moore since I was 5. And at 47 it hasn't diminished not 1 bit.
I was four years old at the time. I am proud to have been around for that era.

Wow .Now thats a real lady .No jewelry nothing fake.Plain jane and simple.Awesome
She was not a Plain Jane
Love this theme song! I was so lucky too, to have seen MANY of the episodes filmed live from the studio audience. So many fun memories.
this song is like a time machine. I close my eyes and it I get all these images from the 70's when I was a kid and my parents loved this show.
Loved the sentimental themes back then.

I see my Mom every time I hear this ! Thankfully she is still here in 2023 and when I do hear this I call her and tell her how much I love her and how much I appreciated her struggles in the 70’s after the divorce. Like this show, back then it was a lot like that for my mom even though in the show Marry was single.
She had to make it on her own without a husband and she did it all very well. Many of the stories written for the show could be applied to real life struggles back then and it was easy to relate to it. I suppose that is a large reason the show lasted so long and is still liked today. I believe we grew up in the last best decades in America as today I do not recognize our country.
I want to go back and do it all over ....The 70’s and 80’s were my decades and they were the best years of my life. America was absolutely a different place back then. It was still a treat then to get 30 cents from mom and walk uptown to the gas station to get a Coca-Cola or Pepsi or to the ice cream shop and get a CMP ice cream. We truly did not lock our doors and stayed out till after dark with our bikes and on Halloween we all went trick-or-treating without our parents at night in the cold and it was great fun.. In the summer we played outside all day and all night, The only way my mom got us home to eat was a big brass bell she had outside the sliding glass doors that she would ring to get out attention to come home for dinner. I remember wonderful 4th of July celebrations when mom took us to the ball park and we laid on blankets to watch the fireworks. And of course Christmas and even though it was tuff for my mom raising us she always made sure we had a great holiday . Even Easter was special in America back then... as we get older we started to go see the movies and we really did have the best movies. ( Jaws, Close Encounters, , Raiders of the lost Ark, James bond, Star Wars, Star Trek, Aliens, Predator, planet of the apes, E.T, The terminator, The goonies, Friday the 13th, Batman, Back to the future . ...To name a few.....The TV show line up on the networks were fabulous ( this was before you got 500 channels like you do today and still nothing on is good) we had Dallas, knots Landing, Falcon crest. And every night of the week a network would compete and have for example, Monday night at the movies! Tuesday night at the movies ! and they would show a major movie release. we had real holidays were we all got together and enjoyed each other’s company. We had great stores that are all but gone now in 2023 and great movie theaters and of course the MALLS! It was not the 80’s without a Mall. My very first few jobs were at the mall. First Macdonald’s and then The Gap!. Yes sir those days were GREAT! and I am very lucky to have lived them .... today I don’t even see kids outside and everyone is in fear for saftey from crazy people.... God Bless us all ! (If you can even say that anymore)
I love watching this TV show growing up
The end of the opening is so memorable. I was born in January 1970 but through re-runs or subsequent seasons, I remember MTM throwing her cap in the air.
They decided to keep the hat throwing in every season
I lived in Minneapolis from 68 to 89 and the intro always reminds me of the Minneapolis I knew as a kid.
Love the 1970s fashions and hairstyles.
Beautiful lady. Unfortunate that she took to alcohol. Love the theme song, "Love is All Around" by Sonny Curtis, who wrote and sang the song for the show. He was one of the original members of Buddy Holly and the Crickets. He wrote also "I Fought the Law" and "Walk Right Back."
The most beautiful woman in the world, now she is the most beautiful angel in heaven.
When her son died, she shed a few tears. When her variety show was cancelled, she cried her eyes out. No angel.
@@spideraxis she had her son murdered to get more fame. She sacrificed her sister and her brother she almost helped in assisted suicide. Illuminati detected.

@@MeadeSkeltonMusic I'm sure she was but did she star in a brilliant show with such s great theme song?.
Loved this show. It first aired when I was in 6th grade and ended when I was a senior in high school.
...and in 57 short seconds, this woman cemented my predilection for brunette women for the rest of my life (the whipped cream girl on Herb Alpert's Whipped Cream and Other Delights album didn't hurt either)...
It was Mike Nesmith of the Monkees who first caught my eye as a young girl, establishing my lifelong preference for dark brown or black-haired men.
Mary was a beautiful lady RIP
I remember this theme song from The Mary Tyler Moore show very well! Remember watching it with my late brother and sister on our old T.V. set with those 4 shiny wooden legs!! Nothing like today!! Different time, different world, so many changes. Still love the sound of it! Thanks for the memories Mary, Love you! Rest in Peace...........
I like how this theme was distinct for the first season. Always loved this show
The first season lyrics seems to reflect Mary Tyler Moore's acting career at that point: Can she be successful without Dick Van Dyke?
This show, and this theme song captures a magical period in human history. But soon, all the people to whom it is a treasured memory will have passed away, and the period is essentially erased. Time is brutal. The only constant is God
It is heartbreaking to see how much TV has degenerated in the past 40 years.....if the people of 1970 could get a just a glimpse of what we routinely watch on TV they would think we were mentally ill.....
Indeed the whole thing seems mentally ill sadly.
The second season, it was pretty much decided that Mary has "made it", so the opening got some different lyrics.
Having shot video for news and television I know how much work was put into making that opening. Fantastic opening!
R.I.P. MTM, and thank you for all the memories ! You made it after all !
R.I.P.: Mary Tyler Moore
I like how the lyrics evolved over the seasons.
this show reminds me of my great grandma she had the whole series on dvd so she cold watch it in the retirement home
she died in 2006 and i still miss her i wish i could remeber more of her but she died when i was young
Mary!...I remember this a staple of Saturday night tv from age 7 to 13...CBS...7 pm Central...and I remember her being in the Central Time Zone in Minneapolis..as in Kansas City...when we heard them announce times on television...we automatically made it one hour earlier..without thinking....
That hat throw always makes me emotional. Capitalism is ruthless, and when you’re all alone in the world and all you have to hang on to is a job, it’s really tough to survive. Mary getting her job and celebrating with the hat throw says it all.

Primeira Temporada:
How will you make it on your own?
This world is awfully big, girl this time you’re all alone.
But it’s time you started living.
It’s time you let someone else do some giving.
Love is all around, no need to waste it.
You can have a town, why don’t you take it.
You might just make it after all.
You might just make it after all.
Mary Tyler Moore was the holdsom girl next door since seeing her on the Dick Van Dyke Show....she exudes the character of Mary. Everytime I hear this song or watch the opening to the sitcom I get a tear in my eye....
As a father of girls that blossom into ladies and now a grandfather of young girls, your hope and wish in life that they are going to make it after all. They find their way in this cruel world. Encounter people that treat them right. Fair. Square dealing....
For a while I was an overnight editor at the Associated Press and among all the TVs set to the world news, one was kept on TBS (and aired old TV shows like “Gomer Pyle”). Every morning at 5 am this show would come on and whatever anyone was doing, they would stop and sing in unison the intro to the Mary Tyler Moore Show. Everyone one would laugh, then go back to editing the news stories reflecting all the ugliness in the world.
I was born in '92 and miss watching this show with my grandma sooo much...

I read a while back that when MTM was promoting her book about her career, she made a stop in Minneapolis. An elderly lady came up to her and asked her if she recognized her...she was the woman on the left in the background wearing a headscarf. MTM stood up, ran over to her and hugged her saying yes she absolutely knew who she was. The lady's grandchildren always knew their grandma was in that freeze frame shot. Said it was one of the greatest moments of their grandmother's life to get to meet MTM. 🥰
We had just moved from Naples, Italy to Abilene, Texas in the summer of 1970 and I remember us watching this show on Saturday nights on a black & white TV. Mom worked as an R.N. to save money for a color TV. Dad was in Vietnam
