@WatashiwaRaiandesu that's a really good question. You really don't know your register until you try different ways to gauge it. But let's look at it more like this. How big are your muscles and how hard (with the right information) are you willing to beat up the tall guy :-)
At age 15 I began training in the opera vocal style, but after a couple of years I switched to Jazz/Blues. It was hard at first because, as you know, opera's a different technique. I'm now 49 and wanting to sing again, but my voice is different due to hormonal changes etc. and recent sinus surgery. Do you think I am better learning from scratch? I've lost half an octave upper range & half octave low range.
Very cool video and I loved when you talked about bob dillon and Louis Armstrong etc and I agree there’s only a few nightingales out there and then there’s everyone else 👍👍
When I was 17, my highest was a A4 and that was when I strained for it. Consistency would be a G4 or F#4. Now I'm 2 years into the KTVA program. Highest note right now? Bb5 sometimes C6 in head voice if I squeak it up. Chest voice up to a Bb4 or C5. :) Never give up!
Perhaps due to the fact that vocal cords (or folds) are anchored by muscle tissue attached to the larynx, this could be the 'workout' said muscle could use to strengthen itself (slow contraction and stretching creates micro-tears in the muscle fibers - the muscle will grow back stronger as a result). Thereby allowing for more accuracy and sustain at higher octaves.
I'm thinking a lot about getting your course lately. I'm a guitar player that wants to become also a serious singer and I find your words and story really inspiring (I'm a baritone, too!). You truly are a great teacher and singer, Ken. Thank you for sharing this!
Wow, I cannot believe you just said that about being a baritone! My singing teacher back in the day told me I was a 2nd baritone and that I should give up trying to be a rock singer, as most or all of them are tenors... I'm guessing? So, that being said, the band I was in was kind enough to tune down a whole step for me...crazy right! So glad I watched this! Thanks, agw.
What an inspiration. Thank You for this 'little talk', and did I mention I've seen many of your other videos?....Fantastic voice, AND not a Diva?... You are humble and gifted like very few have been. You make points and suggestions that make anyone think in a new direction.
Haha.. I was sitting here watching this vid and it is 4am, when Ken started wailing it out, my dog went crazy barking. I freaked out thinking she was going to wake my 4 month old.
Just a great video that is so true, and how often are people put down for trying and not getting right the first time. You try and sing get told you can't sing so you go through life believing you will never be able to sing.
Hey Ken, just went to your site and heard you sing against a that bunch of classics track. Really solid stuff. Without mentioning any names, it's a fact that you can't barely find any tracks on RUclips with many so called experts. They look great, have the right words and testimonials, etc. The problem is that we have no idea how they sound... maybe if we buy their kit we might have a chance to hear them but your wallet is empty by then> At least you have the guts to show us how it's done. Best
My vocal teacher tells me that my placement is Countertenor. I cannot sing lower notes than F3 very well. In an SATB choir, the Tenor part is low for me...everyone else tells me that. I've always been able to carry Alto and Soprano lines. Solo, I sing in the Alto/Mezzo-Soprano range (F3 to G5). One day, I would love to be a Tenor but they say that it happen in my somewhat older years.
I try not to "strive" fore anything when I sing. :-) I do believe in understanding and using a powered larynx position when learning open throat. Once te mechanism can support it, the larynx and pharynx raise and spread depending where you are in your vocal tract.
I wish I'd seen this video when it was first posted. I'm a 36 Yr old single muma musician (piano, guitar, drums). Played most in bands. Always wanted to sing. Starting now. It's not too late, right?
You are insperational, i totally agree, i couldn't sing to save my life but i loved it and did it anyway and now, everyone tells me i've got a good voice and i wanna go on x factor UK so you are totally right :)
I like the fact you answer people who comment on your vids. My question is many teachers demonstrate a scale like ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah, I am learning guitar too, what scale are they singing? what scales for rock would you practice with your voice? I am trying to sing the notes i play to teach myself ear training and singing
HRROach- have you joined my vocal forum yet? These are the types of questions myself or my commentators answer. Check it out! forum.kentamplinvocalacademy.com
Hi Ken, My name is Alex and I dwell in Moscow. I am an aspiring singer and I think I have the guts to become a very good one (if I master a correct technique). I admire your timbre and your range and - above all - your artistic passion and thank you for encouraging me and a whole lot of other guys across the world to sing and believe in ourselves. I can tell that you walk the walk and really can sing loud and pretty relaxed, but sometimes with some distortion - something that I want to do as well, but get strained and choke instead. By the way, I am very much influenced by Michael Kiske and Sebastian Bach as well as other hard rock/metal singers. My question is - is it possible to attend your tutorials in the USA and do you have any at all (I mean you seem to be so popular that your time is probably all booked up)? I believe that under the supervision of a qualified vocal coach you can progress much faster without damaging your voice ( I am currently taking some bel canto lessions, but all I really want to perform is rock). Thank you, Ken! Best regards, Alex PS This Russian guy reminds me a little bit of you - check this out - ruclips.net/video/lrSKG3TS0uE/видео.html

Year ago I was terrible at singing, now I improved so much :)
It's coming
I try not to "strive" fore anything when I sing. :-) I do believe in understanding and using a powered larynx position when learning open throat. Once te mechanism can support it, the larynx and pharynx raise and spread depending where you are in your vocal tract.
I wish I'd seen this video when it was first posted. I'm a 36 Yr old single muma musician (piano, guitar, drums). Played most in bands. Always wanted to sing. Starting now. It's not too late, right?
thanks! :-)
Wow. Nice! I like how inspirational this video is.
Hi Ken,
My name is Alex and I dwell in Moscow.
Best regards,
Alex
PS This Russian guy reminds me a little bit of you - check this out - ruclips.net/video/lrSKG3TS0uE/видео.html
@thanx4themusic Bob Dylan actually became a Christian back in the late 80's and wrote many songs about Christ like "Serve Somebody". He was Jewish prior to that.
Thank you for inspiring me.
Oh my God. Your Your first note woke everyone in my house. Your voice is much louder than my sound system. Now watching on my phone using earphone...
I have quite a few CD's out :-)
kool attitude Ken.. I always tell people ... anyone that isnt tone deaf can become a really good singer, if you learn the secrets from someone that knows how to teach them, it just keeps getting easier.
