@@Gymnopediea All species contibute to ecosystems including roaches & whales. Unlike roaches (which are only killed usually within human buildings) whale stocks were devestated (many to the point of extinction) until the international agreement and due to their low & slow reproductive rates have only made a slow recovery. Roaches reproduce very quickly and numeriously. The Japanese never really stopped whaling but it was very much reduced. In the US there are exceptions to the whaling ban as well but only for native communities such as the Inupiat of Alaska which hunt Bowhead whale. They are severely restricted by number allowed and may not sell or do anything commercial with the meat. They may only do it as subsistence hunting.

Whaling _can_ be sustainable, although I have too little intel on independent breed counts in Japanese waters. The fact that whaling never really stopped, makes me worried for how sustainable it would be now. Japan isn't usually quite as aggressive as for instance China, when it comes to draining natiral resources, China still has a strong tendency of draining it so badly that fisheries and other "renewable resources" dry up completely, not leaving a sustainable breed to replentish.
Many vehemently oppose whaling, and that's understandable. What it has going for it compared to every other animal food resource, is that they live their life in their natural habitats, and a single specimen provides an enormous amount of food and other resources. None the less - *if* whaling is to be conducted, as with any other fishing and hunting, it's critical that we/they don't strip out the seas. It has to allow sustainability for the breed.
Either way, unless the market should pick up significantly, whaling in Japan may very well die out by normal lack of demand.

I don’t understand why it is prohibited.
I understand that other countries stopped whaling because they were basically wasting whales. All they took from whales was oils and rest was thrown away. That is a waste of whales. I understand that. But what about japan?
We use all parts of whales including their meat, bones and skins. Also, we are being thankful to the lives when we start eating them. Our culture is completely different to your cultures. You need to understand that before arguing to us with your empty brains.
I don’t argue if the whales were endangered. But they aren’t. On the contrary, the number of whales is increasing, which could destroy the food chain. Even 9 year-old children can understand this problem.

As an American who is married to a Japanese citizen for over 23+yrs, I have traveled to Japan many times and have had the experience to eat several different types of Japanese food, some more strange than others by western standards, and yes even some whale meat.
I can say that whale hunting has been part of the Japanese culture for centuries, just like the native peoples from the arctic circle regions that live in Alaska, Canada and other countries. The Japanese kill far fewer whales compared to other Asian countries as well others around the world, and they utilize almost all of the animals they harvest.
Most westerners do not want to understand how important these traditions are to thier heritage. While people in the western countries feel very passionate about this issue, we also need to respect other cultures around the world, no matter how different we may feel about them. I'm very aware there are several other people that will feel very negitve and voice thier criticism with strong, and passionate feelings over this issue. Either way, we all need to treat each other with respect and dignity at all times no matter the issue, espically in this day and age with all the craziness we face on a daily basis all around us and abroad.
