On back scabbards: Just recently watched Badland Hunters on Netflix and there is a scene where the hero is using a shotgun and takes out a lot of enemies when another group comes around the corner down the hall and he's out of ammo so he reaches for his machete over his shoulder in what looks like it's supposed to be a bada$$ move and he can't pull it out, ends up spinning in a circle trying then pulls it around towards the front to draw it. Got a good laugh from that.
It should be noted that it's not because it's too long, but rather it's due to being poorly-fitted to his body. He can't even grab the hilt (in fact, his arms seems so stiff that he can't reach past his head). Even if it was a short item like a arrow from a back quiver or even a knife, he'd have a hard time with that fitting. I'm not saying this in favor of back sheathes. Just mentioning a factor. Many people keep all of their fingers clenched on the hilt and thus can't fully extend their elbow to use their full arm length. They also fail to pull away to the side, which can help draw a few more inches. What I do is relax my middle, ring, and pinky fingers so I can full extend my elbow and then pull my arm away to the side so the blade comes out. In the OG DBZ, Trunks' Sword had just a black handle, no metal divider in the middle, and it can be interrupted as oval, since It was flat 2d animation. so all the faults in the swords are the result of the interpreter who created the physical object doing a bad job examining the source material. in some scenes it's one handed, in others two handed...that's due to the quality of the animation.
So what we've learned here. Trunks' sword is overall very good in design, it simply needs an ovoid handle, a middle of the handle ring with a reduced thickness, and a more rounded pommel. Easy enough to do.
It also should be noted that Trunk's sword design isn't consistently drawn the same way. The color of the wrapping on the hilt, scabbbard, and strap change; the hilt shape changes, etc.
On the topic of drawing a sword from the back, I think he's talked about it before, but because it is a topic I enjoy: You *can* "practically" draw a sword from your back if you have an open scabbard, as in part of one narrow side is open. This way you get the benefit of half scabbards which are often used instead, but with significantly more protection both for the sword and for anyone who might get cut while its stored on your back. (And before you say "no that wouldn't work", It does, I've made and used one. It takes a bit of practice to get it in, but if you know the technique then its no issue to do it reliably)
I had that foam master sword, but my little brother broke it. For my birthday later, he gave me a replacement, not the same model, but a smaller plastic one. It has a different pommel design reminiscent of 16th-18th century pommels (think dussack or backsword), but with a spike. The grip is smaller, only fits 1 hand, and the blade is about 2 feet.
3:00 I love that, bringing some reality to the convention. It's like asking someone to fold a paper... 13 times? I don't remember how many times, but at a certain point, it's impossible regardless of size and thickness of the paper.
Mythbusters tested that. If you mess with the dimensions enough you can get more than 7 folds. Like just standard a4 you can't get past 7 but if it's measured in meters and you've got help you can go past 7
Of all the swords that you covered, Trunk's sword is, by far, the most straight forward, realist and usable. In DragonballZ, you can't tell the profile of the handle. So, I put that on the person who made it. The metal Master Sword is missing it's fullers. At least, the edges seems to have a hollow grind... It looks bad and seems to be bad.
The accuracy an TRUST in both self and physics though... It's even inprobable that the blade will come down an skewer them instead of sheathing BUT that's STILL more likely then sheathing correctly without incident

3:30 the shabard has entered the chat The only reasonable idea for drawing from the back I’ve ever seen (having an opening in the upper part of the back scabbard so that drawing from the back is possible)
the only place where a completely round handle would be appropriate is the space science fantasy "laser sword" where there is no edge to align because the blade is effectively contained plasma... cheers and keep up the great content!
Just a reminder that, on katanas, that collar around the base of the blade is called the Habaki. It serves two purposes: it’s there to provide some soft metal to act as a kind of buffer against all the shock that the hardened steel blade might encounter. That, and it’s used as a mildly tapering spacer for when the sword is sheathed in the Saya (scabbard.) The Habaki tapers outward as it travels down the blade of the Tsuba, so that the sword itself seats nice and tightly, and really fills out the Koiguchi (the opening of the Saya.) This is why katanas don’t just slide right out their respective Sayas.
Granted I didn't draw my first sword like Link's Master Sword, but that's possibly because I'm bad at straight lines and so it more resembled a Cossack Sabre. That said when I was that age I hadn't heard of Zelda but had played Cossacks.
Love your channel. For role playing reasons, I need to carry a Wakizashi that has a gorgeous scabbard and handle but the blade can be crap. Negotiations ongoing with Fire and Steel. I told them I heard of them from you!
Can't say that I've ever drawn a sword, but the first one that I made had a blocky short crossguard similar to the Master Sword, long before I even heard of Zelda. Inspired by a Conan game I played at a friend's on an Apple IIe.
The fantasy sword store arc is not something I thought I'd want, but I'm enjoying it well enough. Hopefully his metrics are improving! I hate seeing decent RUclipsrs struggling with the algorithm.
Trunks was such a character of our millennial generation. The smirk, the stoic expression and the hardness of the life with a dash of empathy. I mean young kid who can fight stylishly with a cold precision was such a vibe for us in the 90s lol. Main characters of Yuyu Hakusho and such.
@yosayoran1 And one of the few examples of a character who somehow (or because of it) still looks badass. The DragonBall Super Trunks wears a more conventional outfit but for some reason looks kind of boring compared to his OG outfit
Yeah, don't worry, I'm actually with you there when it comes to round handles. If they don't have some kind of swell or grip material, a plain round handle would tend to roll in a user's hand. Otherwise, just use gloves with a sure grip material of their own.
I like this series a lot. These pieces look really good😊 I know there's not a lot of want for it, but I prefer maces and want, eventually, to have some of my designs mads. I hope there are more mace videos sometime in the future 🙏🏻 Cheers man! 🍻
It's actually kind of intriguing that Dragonball Z of all manga's/anime's is always using pretty realistic sword designs. If anyone could wield impractical sword designs, it would be these characters with their impossible strength and speed. But then again if you can blow up planets and punch or kick through people, why even bother with weapons?
Several DBZ characters actually DO use impractically large weapons.... but these are KI blades. Also... when Trunks's sword gets broken in DBS... he creates a buster sword-sized Ki blade by channeling his Ki into the broken hilt. Realistically, Toriyama just... didn't have a fondness for weapon-based combat I guess.
Master Sword is one of my favorite fantasy weapons. It would have some weight distribution problems if it was used in real life but that’s fine for a fantasy weapon, the bulky handle gives it a striking silhouette and it looks like something a human could feasibly swing around
Trunks has also sheathed his sword by tossing it in the air and casually tilting his torso so that the sword just falls into the scabbard behind his back. One of the benefits of being a superhuman martial artist, I suppose.
Crazy idea but i wonder if those little fangs were added on to the wall hanger specifically to discourage people from actually trying to swing it around 🤔
Remember, Link is stronger than a Normal Human so he is able to use shields & weapons that are heavier than Normal. Add on top of that his Magical Gauntlets which enhance that even more. 5:45

@@vksasdgaming9472 It's technically a game mechanic, but if you looked at it separate from that just seeing yourself living in that universe. Think of Link's inventory capacity, carrying that much stuff all at once indicates great strength. Look at during the Deku Tree quests, falling from near the top of it all the way down to the ground floor spider web without injury also indicates extra toughness.
@@morrigankasa570 Game mechanics are really bad way of gauging how strong or tough someone is. Having two metal spikes rammed through your head and getting your neck twisted 180 degrees with those spikes being used as handholds does not hamper anyone's fighting ability either if every kombatant of Mortal Kombat is asked. Same applies to Link. For all that is known Hylians (or Kokiri) are all tough enough to endure such hard landings.
The reason the cross guard on the Master Sword is overly designed that way is to match the eagle on the Hylian Shield. It's meant to resemble an eagle perched on top of the blade.
Weirdly enough, the first sword I remember drawing was a scimitar with a serrated spine. I always defaulted to swoopy, spiky hatchet/axe/machete type drawings. And reverse curve choppy things. I was destined to create mall junk villain swords.
I imagine the "mean" part is WHAT the free gift IS if you ACTUALLY prove you CAN and do pull a real sword from a back sheath... From either or both sides ..
It does seem that it was a beveled bar it could have been more narrow edge to edge as well and would have been faithful to the design of the master sword.
I was Young Link for Halloween one year. I was probably 10yo and i could barely draw that puny sword from my back, and getting it back in was a royal pain. It does make sense, though, if you can manage, since Link does a lot of running and only occasionally gets into fights
I like to think (ignoring the events of Skyward Sword) that the edge things on the Master Sword imply how swords evolved in Hyrule. It looks to me like the type of thing that could happen if a swordsmith (or an entire culture of them) had a history of making zweihänder type war swords, and then transitioned into making shorter, simpler swords for personal protection, leaving that detail where the spikes used to be out of tradition. That's fun to chew on, because it could suggest a past of warring kingdoms before Hyrule was united, and the Master Sword being modelled after these post-war weapons as a new threat emerged. It might even explain the sword's odd position as a sort of one-handed longsword. How to make war-sized swords again after ages of peace? Just take the ones we have and make them longer! No time to iterate, evil's on our doorstep!
Yeah, for having a 'bladed item' which was a metal fidget toy with a blunt blade (OBVIOUSLY)... It's ridiculous, the UK is failing so much with shit like that and making arrests, but London is still stab capital of Europe...
Speaking of weird weapons, Skall I think Jians and hard whips of china would be interesting weapons that you should look into. They're quite obscure but still weapons that quite a few people used.
So the addition of the points on the guard was to make the piece holding the wings into a complete crescent shape. Picture it underneath the wing like portions
When I drew swords as a kid, I only drew curved swords (like schimitars), rapiers, and buster swords (like Cloud's). I don't think I've ever drew a sword with a wing-like crossguard since it didn't made sense with any of the aforementioned swords.
I think the round handle is just a matter of it being drawn that way because of ease of drawing. We can pretend it has that oblong shape to help with edge alignment
My headcanon has always been that the bluish metal in the handle area (which is seen in various other divine artifacts from the series) is a magical material that weighs very little.
Part of my immediate issue with the "Trunk's Sword" is that it doesn't really even look close to what Toriyama drew. For instance, the handle of the sword in manga/anime was definitely NOT! round. It was wider at the top than at the bottom, and had no mid-grip adornments. The handle looks like it was more along the lines of a hand and a half-sword grip. The blade too, had no fuller, and instead had a diamond cross section, Which is less than realistic, if you use the Anime's thickness. On the other hand, diamond profile Longswords exist, so toning it down a notch from the anime would yield a wonderfully functional weapon
The only movie or show I’ve seen someone draw a sword from the back realistically was in John Carter were he draws it out holding the handle then grabs the blade and draws it the rest of the way that way
2:43 Is that a show-accurate scabbard? I recall in one scene Trunks seems to be pulling the scabbard down and left, and I always took that as him adding the space necessary to get the sword in (and then any other times he’s drawing or sheathing it don’t show it all to save on animation, because it was just implied that he was doing the same thing again). Or maybe we’re just supposed to assume it’s a shabbard.
My first original sword design was a ninjato (one handed straight katana) with a basket hilt because I found Japanese sword hand protection inefficient. My first European design was an regular longsword with warpicks as the guard. The idea was to use them by holding the sword by the scabbard (with would not work, but turns out mordeau is a thing so good design for wrong reasons) . I don't think is used wing as a guard until I came up with a paladin sword because angel wings duh. Pretty sure it was three wings on both sides but can really remember.
Interesting that they changed the blade on the Trunks sword quite a bit. In the anime it’s got a diamond cross section with a central ridge, and a flattened diamond grind at the tip on the flat side of the blade, which I’ve always thought looks a bit odd. I like what they did here, apart from the long ricasso at the base of the blade, which I never really like on European longswords.

@@cadethumann8605 Well he does have a habit of breaking his sword, so...
All of these have been great. Really enjoyed your banter, and looking at the cool swords. Even the ones that weren't that practical. Great videos.
As a LARPer my fave trick was having two hilts showing over my shoulders that were actually daggers.
It also came with Link's shield
3:00 I love that, bringing some reality to the convention.
It's like asking someone to fold a paper... 13 times? I don't remember how many times, but at a certain point, it's impossible regardless of size and thickness of the paper.
7 I believe
@@isaacorr3180 At which point you have 128 layers of paper already. 13 would be over 8000 layers.
@@isaacorr3180 That seems to be it.
Mythbusters tested that. If you mess with the dimensions enough you can get more than 7 folds. Like just standard a4 you can't get past 7 but if it's measured in meters and you've got help you can go past 7
@@wimfranken826 neat :D
Of all the swords that you covered, Trunk's sword is, by far, the most straight forward, realist and usable. In DragonballZ, you can't tell the profile of the handle. So, I put that on the person who made it.
The metal Master Sword is missing it's fullers. At least, the edges seems to have a hollow grind... It looks bad and seems to be bad.
Loving this new series of videos. Thanks again for continuing it.
Thanks to Skall I now make an effort to consider edge alignment when designing and building weapons. Also why I like maces so much.
Nice! Good to know you're still at it. :)
Trunks actually throws his sword into the air, and lets it fall into the sheeth. Does it in the show
The accuracy an TRUST in both self and physics though... It's even inprobable that the blade will come down an skewer them instead of sheathing BUT that's STILL more likely then sheathing correctly without incident
@@robertagu5533 DBZ characters often have telekinesis... so it's possible Trunks is actually using telekinesis.

The only reasonable idea for drawing from the back I’ve ever seen (having an opening in the upper part of the back scabbard so that drawing from the back is possible)
the only place where a completely round handle would be appropriate is the space science fantasy "laser sword" where there is no edge to align because the blade is effectively contained plasma... cheers and keep up the great content!
This fantasy weapon series has been very interesting.
Granted I didn't draw my first sword like Link's Master Sword, but that's possibly because I'm bad at straight lines and so it more resembled a Cossack Sabre.
That said when I was that age I hadn't heard of Zelda but had played Cossacks.
Goddamn, I love this series!
I'm so glad you managed to get hands on experience with so many of these props!
I hate seeing decent RUclipsrs struggling with the algorithm.
a high fan from Brazil!!!
That shop owner is all kinds of gorgeous and definitely knows her swords!
It would be so cool to see a more HEMA-accurate fight scene or sparring match with Link’s southpaw sword & board setup.
The Master Sword is my favorite fantasy sword ever. I'm glad you didn't try to spin attack inside the shop. 😆
this one visit got you quite a lot of content
Trunks was such a character of our millennial generation. The smirk, the stoic expression and the hardness of the life with a dash of empathy. I mean young kid who can fight stylishly with a cold precision was such a vibe for us in the 90s lol. Main characters of Yuyu Hakusho and such.
The cropped jean-jacket with purple hair was peak 2000's fashion
@yosayoran1 And one of the few examples of a character who somehow (or because of it) still looks badass.
The DragonBall Super Trunks wears a more conventional outfit but for some reason looks kind of boring compared to his OG outfit
I'm 33 and I have no idea who trunks is. Don't tell, me, I don't care.
@@onyxraze Okay? Why post about it? No one asked you if you knew the wielder of one of this video's swords.
Foam swords are becoming way better as wall hangers than cheap steel ones.😮
I wonder if the wide rounded guard would help distribute forces with heavy thrusts. Like with a Rondel.
I'd love to see a video of you testing out the ergonomics of different shields from the Zelda series
Yeah, don't worry, I'm actually with you there when it comes to round handles. If they don't have some kind of swell or grip material,
a plain round handle would tend to roll in a user's hand. Otherwise, just use gloves with a sure grip material of their own.
Great series of videos thanks !
@@marhawkman303 Oh I never watched Super.
Master Sword is one of my favorite fantasy weapons. It would have some weight distribution problems if it was used in real life but that’s fine for a fantasy weapon, the bulky handle gives it a striking silhouette and it looks like something a human could feasibly swing around
That hefty blade makes it better at chopping. More tiring to use, but way heftier strike.
Considering the technological setting of DBZ, it would make sense if Trunks' scabbard was spring and magnet assisted.
Skall is like " This foamsword is so special because etc. etc." The metal one "Meh" XD wonderfull.
Enjoying this content! Could you do a review of the foam Dragon Slayer that is on their website? Thanks!
Looking at 2 of my medieval style swords in the living room watching this, to confirm my preference of an oval handle
Good to know.
The Master Sword is an evolution of the Goddess Sword which was a ceremonial blade for Hylia, so it retains some of that fanciness.
Love these videos!
Trunks has also sheathed his sword by tossing it in the air and casually tilting his torso so that the sword just falls into the scabbard behind his back. One of the benefits of being a superhuman martial artist, I suppose.
Bro
Do the Doomhammer
It's just right there
I was looking at Trunk's sword after from DBZ what ifs.
Crazy idea but i wonder if those little fangs were added on to the wall hanger specifically to discourage people from actually trying to swing it around 🤔
Nah, that's actually just part of the Master Sword's design from Twilight Princess on wards.
Remember, Link is stronger than a Normal Human so he is able to use shields & weapons that are heavier than Normal. Add on top of that his Magical Gauntlets which enhance that even more. 5:45
More often than not Link is not initially any stronger than anyone else. Those gauntlets or bracelet he wears make him stronger.
@@vksasdgaming9472 In Ocarina of Time even before he got the Goron Bracelet he was stronger & tougher then the Kokiri or even other Hylian Children. As an adult before he got the Magical Gauntlets he still was stronger & tougher than average.
@@morrigankasa570 Being above average does not mean they are stronger than normal. If Mike Tyson had punched clean through his opponents he would count as stronger than normal human. Link generally is not shown to do superhuman (or superhylian) feats of physical strenght.
It's an eagle? I thought it represented the loftwing from Skyward Sword.
Weirdly enough, the first sword I remember drawing was a scimitar with a serrated spine.
I always defaulted to swoopy, spiky hatchet/axe/machete type drawings.
And reverse curve choppy things.
I was destined to create mall junk villain swords.
Trunks's sword looks like something out of Dragon Quest, one of those midgame steel swords you can get from a good shop at a high price.
Well, Akira Toriyama drew Trunks’ sword and probably at least influenced the sword designs in Dragon Quest.
I imagine the "mean" part is WHAT the free gift IS if you ACTUALLY prove you CAN and do pull a real sword from a back sheath... From either or both sides ..
I’d love to see a review on the Heroes’ Relics from Fire Emblem: Three Houses, especially Areadbhar!
It looked like the steel version of the Master Sword had absolutely no distal taper, and no fullers either. No wonder that it was top heavy...
It does seem that it was a beveled bar it could have been more narrow edge to edge as well and would have been faithful to the design of the master sword.
Better yet, Trunks just YEETS to sword into the air and it drops back into the sheath lmao
I was Young Link for Halloween one year. I was probably 10yo and i could barely draw that puny sword from my back, and getting it back in was a royal pain. It does make sense, though, if you can manage, since Link does a lot of running and only occasionally gets into fights
For the Skallgorithm!!!!
Skallagrim needs to have a camera on at all times so if Skallagrim ever gets burglarized, its free content
I heard somebody got arrested with knife like that.
It wasn't even a knife, but a little fidget toy...
Yeah, for having a 'bladed item' which was a metal fidget toy with a blunt blade (OBVIOUSLY)... It's ridiculous, the UK is failing so much with shit like that and making arrests, but London is still stab capital of Europe...
Very cool.
Speaking of weird weapons, Skall I think Jians and hard whips of china would be interesting weapons that you should look into. They're quite obscure but still weapons that quite a few people used.
Skall was so much nicer to the Master Sword than I thought he would be.
Even back in 2014 I wasn't hard on it. :)
If either one of these swords was part of your youth, you had an (mostly) awesome childhood.
So the addition of the points on the guard was to make the piece holding the wings into a complete crescent shape.
Picture it underneath the wing like portions
Trunks throws the sword in the back sheath.
Yeah, I think he was using telekinesis to pull that off.
3:51 And the design of the scabbard.
Waiting for SuperSkallagrim transformation.
Your hair up glowing gold would look nice i think. 😅
Maaaybe the "cup" on the Master Sword is supposed to be hollow...in that case it would not weight that much.
I would love to see a review on the Sword of Omens from ThunderCats (assuming that shop has a replica).
When I drew swords as a kid, I only drew curved swords (like schimitars), rapiers, and buster swords (like Cloud's). I don't think I've ever drew a sword with a wing-like crossguard since it didn't made sense with any of the aforementioned swords.
I think the little spikes on the mastersword guard are meant to make it look somewhat like some dragonwings where they have that nail/horn/spike
I have thay foam master sword, and I used it to teach some kids sparring, and none of them even recognized it.
I think the round handle is just a matter of it being drawn that way because of ease of drawing. We can pretend it has that oblong shape to help with edge alignment
That foam master sword does indeed look super good. Why isnt it more purple though!?!?!?
That moment you realize the master sword video was 10 years ago
I always thought that the big chunky round part was vaguely reminiscent of a katana Guard
My headcanon has always been that the bluish metal in the handle area (which is seen in various other divine artifacts from the series) is a magical material that weighs very little.
yeah it's definitely not made of steel... but that's about all we know.
