Classic Game Room reviews SUPER MONACO GP for the Sega Genesis! aka the Mega Drive in the UK (16-bit Megadrive). This is one of the best driving video games ever made, and a true arcade racing classic. Forza 2 and Gran Turismo Prologue 5 (GT4 and GT5) owe a great deal of thanks to the Super Monaco series from Sega. It is an F1 racing game, where you take your F-1 race car into a simulated world championship series on tracks around the world. The tracks represent many real world tracks that gamers should be familiar with like Suzuka. Pick your rival, there's many countries to choose from including Finland, Japan, USA, Austria and West Germany. An incredible, detailed and well designed game for those of us into retro gaming and Genesis. Formula one, beautiful women in bathing suits, sports cars.
Be sure to watch the original Classic Game Room episodes. Classic Game Room was the original classic video game review show on the Internet in 1999-2000, now on DVD. Wii, PS3, Xbox 360.
Haha! I used to play this all the time with my dad just to hit the flagman. It was hilarious. Great racing game, especially for its time. Even graphics wise. Used to play a lot when I was a kid. I still remember his big hysterical laugh when he watched me do that for the first time. R.I.P.
+Nathalius Johnson :D me to and i do it still :D good old times ^^
This was probably the game that made me realize that u needed a Genesis.
Yea. Flag man would fly off in the air still waving his flag
The model on the title screen is Mercy Rooney, Playboy Girl of December 1972.
Driver: You
Nationality: Your country
Man, that makes you feel like you're actually in the game!
Always wanted it as a kid, but never got the game, never got a mega drive.
So in 2005, I saw this on a flea market and I just couldn't pass without buying it, even though I still didn't have a mega drive. And last week (November 2015) I saw YOUR REVIEW and immediately bought a mega drive ! Another 10 years after buying the game :D And damn, I missed a lot. Playin it nonstop now, practising hard to master the 7 gears on every track.
After a good week of playing I come to the conclusion, you could easily move from Minarae to the mighty V12 Firenze (Minardi, Ferrari ?) by challenging Firenze in France and USA. These should be easy victories for the Minarae. Awesome game ! Captures the feel of late 80s Formula One perfectly. Looking for the sequel right now.
Nocito87 that's great to know, I played it a lot when I was a kid but never managed to get to the Ferrari lol
U got me i might give it ago lol
Firenze are Ferrari and Madonna are McLaren.
This is my all time favourite racing game, played this and Super Monaco GP 2 for years when I was a kid. I love the music on it and the fact that it actually had realism that most racing games at the time didn't have. Like the slipstream you could get behind a car at speed and also how the road had elevation, it was advanced for it's time!
This and the first Sonic were my first video games I got in Christmas of 89. Great memories!
You know when a piece of music triggers a huge memory of something that you have. Well the main theme music of this game triggers pretty much every childhood memory I have between the ages of 4 and 10. What a classic!!
Super Monaco Gp was the first F1 game I played and it still have a place in my heart. I've been playing F1 2018 recently and I often find myself thinking about that amazing game on Genesis. Super Monaco Gp. Days and days playing it on my Mega Drive 3. Beating rival after rival and finally getting my place as Madonna.
I had this game. I learned that if u picked a fairly good rival and beat them early, you moved up to a good team fairly early in the game and you had such a good car you stomped anyone you rivaled. It was a fun game...loved the music and sound effects. I doubt im as good as i was when i was a kid.
Love the cockpit view that this games utilizes, cool seeing your driver's hand turn the wheel.
Seeing just that screen 0:33 by itself was already one of the best things about that game. If that girl was based on a real person: wow she's hot.
This game came bundled with my Mega drive system for which I saved money soo hard. It was really a great game.
The next game I got was Quackshot in summer of 92 for my 11th birthday a few months later..
This video has been a true nostalgia trip to others too according to commenting. :)
Hmm, back when this was recorded on a vhs tape
Great video Mark. Love your comments on SMGP and agree. About five years ago my family and i stayed in a run down HoJo on Miami Beach and their arcade had Sega's "Exhaust Note" in a sit down cabinet. It used a majority of the same intro graphics and themes. I raced on it quite a few times and even as beat up as the machine was it was friggin awesome. You have to get Exhaust Note for the intergalactic space arcade. Mucho gusto.
one of the best! I remember that after u won the first season u had to defend your title. but no matter what u could not win the first 2 races. so u got dethroned and had to fight back.
I was just going to write this...I wonder how many people didn't realize the game continued on after the first season? If you got 1st and the title, the new guy the next year would just run you over in the first race, no matter what. I always would try to get to him but he blew by you and stayed ahead until the end of the game. Then you had to work back up, as you said. I never went much beyond that, tho. I wonder if it continued each season?
I thought this As well but apparently he his beatable! Think there's a vid on here or somebody doing it
absolute classic game, down loaded it on an emulater, loved it , spend days missing school and education becasue of this game
In the Sega Genesis version of this game, the Yamaha DX7 internal patch/ROM-2B patch “Grand Prix” was heard.
I absolutely LOVED this game back in the day! Like you, I played this game for MONTHS non stop! Man this is pure nostalgia!!
Cool man you do a first rate commentary! Nailed it on just about every aspect of Super Monaco and brought back some memories. I remember being flabergasted about not being able to beat Ceara in the second round of World Campionship.
I still have this game along with my Sega Genesis that I got on Christmas of '91. This is one game and system I will never sell.
I like when you hit the Flag man at the Finish, he goes flying into the sky! LOL!
this was my 1st racing game , so many years ago. Menu, pit crew, sounds...… brings back memories.
Wow, was it really 20 years ago?! I watched your whole review, good work. Remember that desperate feeling of having your rival approaching in your rear view and aiming to simply take them out - think that was key to completing this game - ramming your opponent! Brilliant, now to seek out some more of your reviews...
the intro song is so...
so...
so..
CLASSIC, EPIC, AWESOME...
remember me a lot...
Great Review!
Me and my bro still to this day have a laugh at the audio commentary when your getting the hurry up from your pit guy in 16bit. Com onnnnnnnnn!
OMFG Thank you for bringing the memories back! I had completely forgotten this game, I spent months on it as a child... It's good to see it again...
One of the first racing games I ever played as a kid. Memories
I still have this game for the Genesis and I play it every now and then. Really fun.
this was 1 of my fav games of all on sega, started with automatic then used manual till the end ... great game
I bought this game last week. It's pretty hard (esp. the part that you need to avoid crashes or game over).
And I thought I was the only one to love this game so much :)
still play this on my phone, it's got great playability still
I should never have sold Mega Games 3. But I dealt with that today, by buying it back, and Super Maonaco GP 2, which I have never played before. Love that you can actually save your game with 6 slots on SMGP2! No more massive passwords!
Your days are gone!
hahaha yes fake cena i see the irony
I love how the engine in one of the cars is titled the Sega SG-1000 V8. SG-1000 was the first console released by Sega in the early 80's!
This was the very game that got me into driving games as well, next to RC Pro Am.
Minarae's engine is a SG-1000. :)
I had the same thing with this game:
I was much better in this game, when I was a kid. Today I'm pretty bad at playing this.
Pretty good racing game & I really don't like racing games (except kart racing games like Mario Kart. Those are awesome).
We had this game in my family. My dad & brother were playing this many many times.
I played the HELL out of this when I was a kid. So fun for the day.
super monaco was a little revolution in the racing game world, the fact hat you could change teams and stuff was pretty awesome at the time, and race in a bunch of tracks was really good too.
SO MANY MEMORIES
lol! the engine of the car is the "Sega SG1000" , the name of their first home console in Japan. It came out around the time of the Intellivision / Colecovision and was similar. There's even a European console called the Dina 2-in-1 that is a Colecovision and SG-1000 mixed together. Awesome reference!
Fantastic game. In driving games I usually avoid manual transmission but this was the only driving game where I made the effort to master the 7 gear transmission. This game rewards effort. Its also one of the first driving games where you could slipstream.
The background graphics especially are beautiful; that scenery is beautifully drawn and amazingly detailed. Very atmospheric (the wind sounds really added to it IMHO).
my first racing game! i remember playing this when i was little. im 21 now
This game has incredible graphics. The tracks are actual 3D? And the tunnel... wow. Amazing.
man o man...i was obsessed with this game when i was like 10. best game of all time i think...the one i enjoyed the most anyway.
i loved this a blast from the past i wish i had it back and a fantastic vid mate well done
I am building up a classic genesis collection as of a week ago and I ordered this game off amazon for a total of 7.50 in very good condition. Love it!
I still remember my first racing game, F1 World Grand Prix for Nintendo 64. It was much more of a simulator though. I got it for Christmas when I was only 6 years old. I played it so much I had nightmares for weeks! No wonder my parents wouldn't let me get 'T' rated games until I was 14!
I have tried to play it now though and I am really bad at it. Although I think back in the day, the only reason I won is because I kept damage off and drove shortcuts across the gravel all the time.
Best opening title screen on a game ever!!! Legendary game.
I used to be very bad playing this when I was 7 and crashing all the time. But 16 years later, I finally conquered it (except beating G. Ceara aka Ayrton Senna which is hard and he's the only reason I came back playing this game.)
I never was much of a Sega-fan back in the day, and I'm not really the racinggame-kind of guy.. But I must say that this game actually looks like a lot of fun, and the graphics look quite amazing for the time
I too grew up playing the hell out of this game. If you beat it, and carry on playing you are challenged by an unbeatable (literally) Firenze driver and demoted.
Great review, great game. Thanks.
I have started playing this game again as I want another crack at G.Ceara, about 15 years after I last played this!!!
I remember digging My Genesis out of the closet back in 1998 after being involved in a Motorcycle accident and being temporarily disabled.
I played Super Monaco GP one handed propped up on My elbow with the controller laying next to Me on the bed.
I got so good I could win the Championship driving for Team Zeroforce, yes I would challenge and beat Team Zeroforce to take over the ride.
To take over a ride You just beat a rival in two consecutive races and the car is Yours.
I got that game along with the console and "Zoom" in 1992 :) Those were the days.
Who remembers the two hidden secrets in this game? You could hit the chequered flag marshal and send him flying! Also if you held down some buttons while waiting for the podium screen to appear you could make your driver hold up his head instead of the cup!
One of the best racing games ever, even if the graphics have aged. The gameplay and music are still unmissably great.
EPIC music get goosebumps just hearing it! nostalgia at its finest thanks for the vid
LOL I remember lusting after this so hard as a kid. Never got the Genesis though 😢
This game was also in the arcades. Both versions are amazing.
I played the crap outta this game in the arcade. It was basically the Monaco track with a steering wheel and paddle shifters! Graphics and gameplay were amazing for early '90s.
funny enough, i did grow up with the sega genesis and this was part of my collection....and i never really appreciated it until i watched this video..
I played this game loads when I was a kid but I only just found out the reason for picking rivals... I did NOT know you could get a better car!! I always went up against Rigel! There was after all, no tutorial in the game.
My first Sega Genesis Game! Damn, it was X-mas of 92. But I never owned a Genesis until spring of 93 lol
I beat this game years ago... This game was before it's time...
Remebering playing this all the time as a kid, didnt get very far though but enjoyed it.
I had this game when the genesis just came out back in the day. Loved it so much I recently got another console with a copy of this game. My original was furb lol.
I'm absolutely serioud when I say this... This is probably my favourite racing game ever. I played this game nearly every day when I was a kid between the ages of 5 and 9. I haven't played it since 1997 :( But there is a new Sega Mega Drive console being made by a company called Blade and it is being released over here in the UK on April 24th :) It's got 15 games built into it and you can play ANY cartridge port in it too, Japanese, European, American... So I am going to buy Super Monaco GP :D
Oh to be able to drive for team Madonna!
I soooo love this game... I manage to get into the team madonna.. it was amazing back then.
Oh I remember this game. I remember there are 4 Levels, and I sometimes picked the Green guy ... Rigel lol. I like green...
I remember I used to go on the D level... just because it had a GREEN car. I believe it was Rigel.
Then after some time my cousin got some cheat codes and we just got the best car, a red one I believe ... man that was fast.
When that girle poped up man i released all of my bits all over the screen.
Great game :P I used to play it with my uncle.
Damn! Why now, games don't have this unique something.....
SUPER MONACO GP 2, I had that...
I loved it very much...
this and whip rush made spent months on my sega gen.
hard game at first, but the more you play the more you get into it
Managed to get a boxed copy of this game for only £2.83 on Amazon. Great game.
This game is awesome! keep doing these reviews man...
I rented this game so much that the owner of the store gave it to my brother and I for Christmas
super monaco gp is one of the best if not best racing game that was on the genesis back in the day.
My only experience with this game was with the arcade version. However, judging from this review, the Genesis version seems to be very high quality. I should pick up a copy for myself.
"You're so bad, we're fucked anyway. Our original driver OD'd on cocaine in a nightclub."
That made me laugh.
I remember playing Gran Turismo 3, going on to Cote d'Azur, and thinking "Why does this track seem familiar?"
this looks suprisingly similar to moder f1 games, awesome.
Such great musics!
One of the few reviews that narration didn't irritate me
I love this game… bought it in Japan last april. 300 yens very cheap! In Akihabara.
Ps. I doubt someone beat G. Ceara in the second season of the game…
Have you played the Sega Classics Collection for the ps2? I haven't yet, but I hear the remake of Monaco GP (not Super Monaco, just regular Monaco) has a nice arrange mode that looks pretty cool.
awesome music at 2:11
Absolutely class I loved this game the graphics were awesome at the time!
I remember this one.
I'd love to have TROUBLE flashing before my eyes like that when it's imminent.
One of my favorite arcade racers!
Great review!
This game was badass...but the manual mode used to drive me mad lol I could never get the shifts right
lol i still have this game and a dusty megadrive.
i remember playing it as a kid and practising constantly until i could use the best manual gearbox
Its impressive how fast this is
dood, you have to make a video with ONLY the intro song in full-length instrumental at its finest!!
DO IT, like Nike! :p
this version is cooler than the current
please tell me I'm not only person that loved "Concentration" on this game!
yeah that's the same route that I normally took -- minarae->tyrant->madonna. tyrant (tyrrell i guess) was as powerful as any car if i remember correctly.
