XHDATA D808 observations

- Following my GB5WOR video in January 2019, a couple of people contacted me with questions about the XHDATA D808 radio that appeared briefly.
Before winning it in an e-bay auction, I also had questions that I had not managed to answer by watching RUclips videos about this radio.
This video contains the answers to all these questions, and includes information about the antenna socket, battery types, performance on FM and if Long Wave is really as bad as some people have made out.
If you have any questions that I haven't answered here, and that don't appear in the multitude of other RUclips videos about this radio, then please leave them in the comments. I will try to answer, with the health warning that I am new to this radio myself.

Great video. Great info.
I finally ordered this radio. I’m in the U.S. and Amazon is telling me 3-6 weeks for delivery ❗️
Can’t wait to get it ❗️
📻🙂
Are you happy with the radio now ?
Ehab AbdulburAlfakhory
Absolutely ❗️
I have the PL-880, and the CCSKywaveSSB, as well as the ( 13 year old, previous gen.) Sangean
ATS-909.
The XHData D-808 is a DSP radio so is very selective. It has a bigger ferrite bar inside than most radios, so it’s OUTSTANDING on MW.
SW is also excellent.
A really good radio, with high build quality.
📻🙂
I’ve had mine for a little while now. Love it.
( No Weather Band)
This radio is on par with the C.Crane CCSKywaveSSB,
The Tecsun PL-880,
And Sangean ATS-909X,
As well as the Eton.
Price is a major selling point.
It also does very well onSSB.
📻🙂
Try in the airband to catch some wheather stations
Hi Edmund thank you for this. I have had a D808 since July 2018. Although I live in Dundee, Tayside, I have tested my D808 when staying with friends near Bexhill/Hastings on the same south coast that you mention. I agree with your observations concerning LW on this set. This is due to a lack of a proper LW coil being wound around its ferrite rod.. However, I remember monitoring 252khz LW near Bexhill and was surprised to hear a program of Latin American music. I'm afraid I can't claim to Latin America on LW on the D808. However, what I was listening to was Algerian Channel 2 on 252khz. I was fascinated by the enormous number of Spanish stations audible on MW on the south coast. Also as an old pirate radio fan, I was happy to be able to hear the latest incarnation of Radio Caroline on 648. I also regularly use the radio for BC bands doing and have a few videos on my youtube Channel. Have you checked out its little brother, the Radiwow R108? Essentially, its a stripped down version of the D808. 73s Jim
I have found that the flatter batteries can be used with a small metal washer to make it contact a charger connector or other.
What a moaner, this radio is great. Such a negative attitude.
The antenna jack only works for SW, Air and FM on my D-808. Don't need it for MW as the internal rod is so long and has amazing sensitivity.
The battery that came with my radio works just fine, 30 hours plus usage, charges fast too. Three bars on the display drops to two bars (75%) in an hour or so, but yes, it stays on that two bars forever.
LW isn't a problem in the UK, barely anything to listen to anyway. It's a great radio, I mostly use it for SW which is incredible.
The stand on my radio is fine, haven't managed to break it.
Hold your hand up to the screen light and it'll reflect the light onto the buttons, not a problem.
Re: the DAB -- the LCD is clearly just ready for a different model. It's obviously not a feature of this version, it's not even advertised as a feature, so why would you even think it might have the circuitry inside?
Liofa
Case-In-Point:
Tecsun PL-880 has a lot of features that are not in the instructions.
SO, it IS POSSIBLE ❗️
📻😐
Still wondering if the radio can run from USB in the event the battery dies or is removed?
Hell yeah Ed, I'm going to pull the trigger on this.

Hmm bought one of these about a year ago from aliexpress for £51...now £60 incl delivery I noticed. Yes you need a reasonably sized thumbnail to open the stand and all is fine with me anyway ! Yes LW not great. OIRT FM very sensitive...in fact just back from Kiev which again proves this. Brilliant on AM. Heard China on 1377 kHz just with the internet rod recently...clip on my channel. Enjoy :)
wello Ed, I'm with you re your review of the XHDATA, I've had one now for a few years now and quite happy with it, for a lower cost portable shortwave receiver it's good value, needed it for long wave for something I was doing and it pour performance didn't help but for everything else it's ok. The one thing I do with this radio is pull the battery when it's not going to be used for a long time the clock and over stuff that backs up the settings in the background will drain the battery 🔋 not a good thing for lithium iron batteries, just a thought if you want to save the settings whilst changing the battery have you thought about plugging in the charging lead whilst changing the battery.
I got it ‼️
MW is incredible.
Apparently, they must have worked out a couple of kinks.
Short Wave is excellent.
Love it.
Also : I believe “the Radio Geek” has opened one of these as well.
So far, I’ve not heard anyone having any problems with these.
How long these will last, remains to be seen. That said,
If you are thinking about getting one of these, I’d say, go for it.
I’ve had several radios,
Including the Sangean ATS-909 , Kaito (Degen) KA-1103 , Grundig G-6,
Tecsun PL-390 , Tecsun PL-600 , And C.Crane CCSkywave-SSB.
( The Kaito gave out after 3 years, as did a Tecsun PL-660 - which I replaced with the PL-600) .
For reception: the XHData D-808 beats them all.
Also, excellent video.
📻🙂
Jeff King --- Yeah MW is amazing on this radio.
Edmund spice your xH Data D 808 mw lw fm streo SW, ssb, AIR 6 Band radio Receiver is cool and your sangean shortwave receiver is cool
Thanks for your review. I just got one from ebay. Love it!
I don’t know if I would trust a used one [ of any high tech radio].
I have the XHData D-808,
And the C.Crane CCSKywaveSSB, and now the Tecsun PL-880.
All 3 radios are outstanding. The XHData is the radio to get if you’re into Medium Wave, or if you are on a budget. They really put a lot of thought into the designing and building of this radio.
The only [ real] drawback, is that XHData has not been around very long. They are fairly new to the market, so there’s no way to tell about long term reliability.
Sangean,Tecsun, C.Crane, and Kaito (I’m thinking of the KA-1103/
DegenDE-1103) have all been around, and their comparable radios are proven, and we know what to expect long term.
Other than that, this is one fantastic radio.
Great video.
📻🙂
I wish it had hygrometer and barometer also. like those triple sensor watches !!
Heck, they could even put in a mini Geiger counter and a swiss army knife if they could along with DAB and DMR decoding 🤣🤣
Thanks. Great video.
Great video, I like its size. I thank you for the details about the battery. I ordered a d-808 and can't wait until it arrives. Cheers!
Hi Edmund, Vancouver BC Canada here. Thanks for your channel. I just received one of these from China, however have a question for you please. When you press the up arrow to scan, on any band or for any frequency, does it momentarily pause on a found freq, then continue scanning? Or does it lock on to the frequency found and stay there until you press the up or down arrow again? Mine seems to just stay on the freq found, and will not continue on scanning like my Grundig Satelitt or R-108 Radiwow do. Not sure if maybe mine has a problem or not. Nothing found on the internet about this so far. Thanks very much. Craig
I use both the radiwow and XHDATA to scan airband. XHDATA locks on and stops. I tried everything to get it to continue scanning as it sensitive and stops at every blip. then I tried everything to get the radiwow to stop and not continue scanning...no luck, if you learn the hack shoot me a message on one of my videos. 73s Brian
@@MrBrian8749 ATS function is the closest thing to what you're looking for. It will scan the band, store all found stations, and then you can easily browse them. See the user manual of D-808.
Thanks for the video. Nice review. 73s Brian
Hi Edmund. Many thanks for posting this video. As for the longwave frequencies that's probably down to the internal ferrite rod aerial i guess and
could be resolved by using the external aerial socket into a wire?
I do have a vlf converter so that could also be used.

There's another video ruclips.net/video/c_sMUv33cFs/видео.html showing you how to add an external rotatable rod as a mod.
@@redf7209 Thanks for the information.
Hi, do you have any updates on XHDATA D808 usage after 1 y? Air reception? Still recommended it?
Hello there, apologies for my late reply. Well I must confess that I have not used the radio that much but, yes, I am still happy with it. I've never had any interest in air band but it still works great on Medium Wave where I do most of my listening. I've noticed recently that it will drain the battery down pretty quickly, but I don't know if (1) the battery is failing (2) the radio has developed a fault or (3) it has always done this but for some reason I've only just noticed!!
@@MrEdTraveller One thing which would be very useful to find out is .. can it receive NBFM on the VHF low band 64 mhz up. It definitey receive in this range - the question is more of the FM decoding and of couse the step size which seems to be 10kHz minimum.
That would mean , if true, in Nz it would allow Rx of the unscrambled Police and fire bands.
In the UK it would allow Rx of the 4mtr FM band - which also applies in Israel, Ireland, Sa and many other places. Commercial 4mtr Rx or Tcvrs are very hard to come by.
regards, TE. Fidler in NzL
Time needs a reset, as it would be wrong anyway by the time it took you to change the battery....
Hello! Nice video! How's now your XHDATA? I am planning to buy this.
15:45 I would imagine that LCD screen was commissioned for several units apart from this one.
Hello Edmund, great review. I got one a week ago and have one question. When I switch on the unit and have turned the volume wheel to the minimum I can hear a ground level of noise which is annoing me. When I sit in a silent room and hear FM stations with good quality i can hear clearly that noise in the background. With headphones too. Is this normal? My 5 year old Sony Xperia has a FM reception with nearly no noise. Is something wrong with my unit or does anybody hear this too? As I now noticed it is also on MW, SW, Airband....
Mario Drechsler
I’ll have to check on mine.........
Please acknowledge this so I can find it again, and let you know.
📻🙂
Hello Mario, apologies for my late reply (I don't log into RUclips very often!) Yes, mine does this as well. I'd never really noticed before but I will now probably haha!!
Mario Drechsler
Mine also does, so it’s just the way these are made. I almost never use headphones, and I suppose I’m so used to listening to SW, and long distance AM ( MW), that I never paid any attention.
I also checked my
CCSKywaveSSB, and it is just barely doing the same thing. Both radios use almost exactly the same circuitry, SO it may be the DSP circuit.
( there are a couple of things I don’t like about these DSP radios).
But as for me , doesn’t bother me. But it is interesting to note .
📻🙂
@@jeffking291 Thank you very much both of you. Normally it doesnt matter, but i wanted to use it also to hear FM with my Teufel Concept C Stereo System. As I mostly hear one station I can also stream it via Internet.
Mario Drechsler
Hey, no problem. -
Actually, I also just checked my only other
[ descent] DSP radio, my
Tecsun PL-390, and, while it doesn’t seem as noticeable, the noise IS in the background on it.
And on my Daogoly [ which is a really cheap DSP based AM/FM pocket radio ( that is pretty incredible for DXing AM)], the noise is more prominent.
Checking my mini
Kaimeda SR-201
surprisingly not so much.
📻🙂
Could you recommend a place were I can buy a Panasonic battery like the one you purchased.
Squelch also works on sw
Edmund Spicer - Hello, there! Can you test during the night 153 kHz LW on this radio? Thank you!
nice one .. before i get one just one question . does it receive 144.000 and 230.000 on usb etc. thanks
BRIAN BROWN
This is a “General Coverage receiver( 100 kHz -30 MHz)
📻🙂
The batteries not fitting worries me.
Of The Dawn --- You need to buy the correct shaped battery, this guy didn't obviously.
merci !
please do you know where i can get a new battery ? thank you
Exactly why not to buy the radio.
Hello, just got this radio weeks ago, and regarding the battery, I also experienced the same. I am planning to buy a Nitecore 18650 which has a length of 69mm but the length size of the XHDATA battery is 65mm. Do you think this Nitecore would fit into this radio? Thanks.
Appropriate, because the contact point of the battery box to fix the battery is a spring, and its expansion capacity is sufficient to withstand a 4 mm error
@@ovo2569 Well thank you. I bought the battery and it fits exactly!
What is the battery used? It looks far greater in size than a normal AA battery I can buy in the shops. 73's
Not really in shops, but it is very popular for example for flashlights and other equipment that needs 3,7 Volts. Its form factor is number 18650. It is mostly only available in the internet shops.
@@mariodrechsler2618 It seems popular for vaping kit. Try vaping shops, but its reportedly quite a good rechargable battery anyway. If you want one to carry as a spare in case you cant recharge , they're on amazon as said if you can find real ones
So can the backlight be disabled?
Nice raxiooo
So the battery it comes with doesn't work?
Of The Dawn --- Yes it works just fine. 30 hours plus of usage.
Of The Dawn
Works fine. The only drawback is that you have to charge it, and MW,SW are pretty much useless while charging, because of noise. FM is fine, so you can listen FM while charging it.
Also you can get 18650 batteries, just be very careful in what you buy, as stated, there are a lot of fakes out there.
🙂📻
@@jeffking291 Instructions suggest it may not charge while the radio is on although the indicator would tell you it is
Great video Edmund. A sub from me
XHDATA and it's special batteries, what a shame.....
You are wrong on two counts. Firstly, it is "its special batteries" (the possessive pronoun has no apostrophe, it's is the contraction of "it is") and secondly, the batteries are not that "special" as 18650 batteries are now as common as AA batteries!
