I don't believe in my 64 years and many cars and shops I ever had a tech goes to the junk yard and pull a part to fix my cars. EVER. It's either new or you go hunt buddy. You're truly a master
I know it's been awhile since you posted this vid. but you didn't know if your video was what people want to see... and I want you to know that the answer is YES.... YOU don't do any video that isn't loved by the viewers... Your sincerity and work ethic are inspirational........ kudos to your Dad and Mom ...... so my advice to you... do what you think we'd like... or not....... but we will love whatever you do E.O. .... God bless your family too .... they deserve all your time and we are really glad you care to share. Jon O
My 2007 patriot is giving me the same problem. I crossed this video by mistake and ended watching it. I didnt have the time to have mine checked in a garage but now i know whats the matter and I'll fix it myself. Big thanks
Big thanks to you, Doc. I had a 2008 patriot today with multiple codes. One of the codes was the p0481. I did a Google search and there you were. My customer's car had 1 green relay terminal and 3 wires in the area that were chafed through. The chafing allowed moisture into the wire and corroded the control circuit for the cooling fan relay. I repaired the bad wire sections and replaced the relay. Works fine now. I really appreciate your video. It saved me a big headache. The harness was available for 500 bucks. The labor to replace it would have been huge. Thanks and God bless you.
I like vids just like this one. I get more out of it if the problem is described before you start work on it, then you explain what you are doing until the problem is fixed. You are a good teacher and mechanic.
Eric When I saw all of those trouble codes I felt a little anxiety. Amazing how you do not jump to all sorts of illogical conclusions and use your head and experience to solve a problem. It was really genius how you zeroed in on that problem so quickly. And really worked hard to find a viable and economical solution for the customer (not willing to just settle for the obvious solution of replacing harness and costing the customer a huge amount of money.) Your type of thinking and working teaches a lot about how to properly problem solve. Your technique applies to all sorts of problems.
Eric is the best mechanic I know beside my brother-in-law who lives in the Tomah, Wisconsin area and owns The Auto Stable. Thanks for being conscientious and caring about doing it right the first time.
Must say Eric you have the best car repair channel I have seen on youtube. you seem to really invest in the right tools to have your business running as smooth as possible too. Keep it up.
Thanks Eric. I got a good deal on an 08 Compass with a tow package. It's a little workhorse. Please thank the lady whose 09 Compass you periodically work on. Don't overcharge her because after watching your video 1,000,000 times, I've saved a LOT of money and hopefully you're earning a few bucks posting fixit videos on RUclips. I'm still working on a speed sensor triple dash light after the mechanic changed out a hub. It looks like the sensor was put on correctly but now my abs light is on, with two others lights. I'm also working on a check engine light that traces back to the rear oxygen sensor. The sensor is new. I traced the wiring back to the relay box, like the one you changed in this video, and found one terminal which is corroded. I found the part on Amazon for $14, locally it's $24 but the terminals don't exactly match up. I'd have to change the female receptacle from narrow to wide, the same problem my old lady now has. Thanks again. Slappin the Sides.
I don’t think enough credit is given to gentleman such as yourself..People don’t generally quite understand how sometimes something that seems so simple can be very difficult to find! excellent job. I wish they were all that simple to find.. obviously you and I have had the same problems several times. Cheers!! from clay rogers Clay’s a/c and auto
Oh man, my car was doing the same thing. Checked high and low for the problem. Dealer said I probably needed a new harness. This video saved me about $2300.
Those crimp and seal connectors are totally awesome. When you said crimp and seal I was thinking "Seal?" How in the heck is that a seal..... Then you pulled out the torch and it all started to make sense. I've got google working here in another window and I have just gotta get some of those for myself. Thanks for that tip bud!
The green crusties in action! In times past at work, like you, I learned when you have multiple codes, especially if they're from one fuse or "fuses" close to each other, start with Power and/or Grounds! I saved one co-worker HOURS of diagnostic work, it was one fuse, then he located which part of the circuit was......wait for it....."INTERMITTENTLY" shorting out. Keep up the good work and vidoes!
Eric - Awesome video! really like how you can look with wide eyes and see through to the issues. Don't change a thing in how you get it done. Best vehicle repair videos on the www.Keep on keeping on.rick
That's a really bad spot for that box. Great vid. I'm glad I subscribed. On one of the big RAM truck websites, there is a thread where fuses and relays were not seated all the way at the factory causing intermittent failures and codes. People are going out and pressing down the fuses and relays. Some are finding the seating failures and it's correcting the intermittent issues. This is on brand new 2015's. i'm going to check my 2014 tomorrow. Thanks again.
thanks Mr. SMARt. I'm getting ready to purchase a used 2009 Jeep Compass off a lot. My mechanic brother is coming with his code meter just in case there is something serious. At first glance it's a good buy. Much appreciate your videos, just in case I can do it myself on down the line or take it into the shop. Thanx Coach. Great videos You're the best Eric.
I love to wrench on my 20 year old Jeep XJ. I can't believe how much I've learned from these videos, even when the vehicle is completely unrelated to my own. Thank you Eric.
Love watching your videos Eric O...love the humor, the honesty, and your work ethic, always looking out for the customers...The video and audio quality is also perfect compared to other channels. I have watched probably 50 of your videos to date...keep em coming and again, thank you.
Good to see you making a realistic, practical repair and not replacing the harness like a dealer would. I understand they have to do certain things for liability purposes, but in this case, replacing a harness would just be ridiculous.
Love the dialogue man. Helps give a better insight to everything. I think you do the right amount of dialogue also not too much and not too little. I got a 04' Nissan Quest that this video helped me with. They got a box on the wall where the water drains so it gets corroded easily bad design. Keep up the great videos!
Appreciate that Sean B . I always wonder if I talk to much haha. Always feel like I'm forgetting something. Ahhh the Nissan Quest / Mercury Villager! I have done a fey head jobs on those back in the day, timing belts, water pumps, ohhhh the memory's... haha Thanks again for watching!
Thanks for the instructional videos mr.O there very helpful and inspirational. The dialog does add a personal touch to your videos. It gives us a glimpse into your personality , and your diagnostic thought train.
I like the way you thought through each of the problems and found their commonalities. A good diagnostician does the same. That’s what makes you one of the few that can fix what others can’t. Looks like the problem you found is common based on the comments here. Nice going👍 Eric.
Had similar problem with a lincoln town can.. almost every code was on the scanner....... wire open circuit due to corrosion, and one conductor was grounding out... luckily did not fried the PCM... got main control relay box from Junk Yard... U Pull & Pay... Thanks for sharing.
yep... car was out of Connecticut lot of salt... it better days wind up in Florida... but not to say similar problem in Orlando cause of high humidity... I use a dielectric spay from CRC to keep electrical components dry every so often to maintain.
Great video Dr O! 2 comments : Love the name Dr O! You are a car doctor after all... Enjoyed the trip to the junkyard. It makes the video feel like real world experience, like what you have to do to fix a car and not pay ridiculous amounts of money.
Lol thanks Nick Nicu . The "Dr.O." was intended as a joke to some of my friends way back in the beginning. I stopped using it cuz I didn't want people to think I had a PHD or was some sort of lunatic... The junk yard is awesome!
This is a fantastic video and quite well done. I will most certainly mention it on my channel. Really glad I saw your comment on ETCG's misdiagnosis on the O2 sensor my friend!
I truly enjoy watching both of you guys channels, I always seem to gain the most knowledge from you all that research issues not just shooting the cannon lol.
Great video! I always enjoy seeing all the steps you take in fixing a vehicle and getting junkyard parts is something that is necessary sometimes! Keep up the good work!
Thank you Eric O, this video has given me some direction, I have codes P0480/P0481 on my Alfa Romeo, so I'll be doing some investigation this festive period. Once again thanks.
I have watched many of your videos. It is interesting to watch how your communication and presentation skills have improved. You are obviously a gifted mechanic and now a talented presenter.
Eric: that relay block is a connector. It seems hardwired only because unlike most connectors it also holds the relays. Likely the secret is how the spade lug pins are designed to latch into the block.
Great job Eric and really nice of you to go out to the junk yard to get a connector/harness for the lady. I'm sure that a lot of shops would just quote a bill with a part from the Dodge dealer. Then the customer would say that's too much and off they go possibly junking their car. Your dialogue is just the right amount and the video is not too long. Doing a great job with the videos and with the editing. Keep the good work up...
Hey thanks Terry! Are you kidding me I LOVE the junk yard haha any time I have an excuse to go I go! Silly dream but If I didn't do what I do now I always tell my wife I would have liked to own a farm or a salvage / scrap yard... I know, not much of a dream. Maybe when my boys grow up instead of being Dr.'s and lawyers they will own one.
Funny, you should say that about the junkyard. I enjoy walking around them myself, but the biggest fan is my wife. She says it's like a yard sale to her. I'll say to her that we need this part which can be any one of those GM cars way over there. She'll actually run over there and start hunting the part down. Crazy, crazy....Take care Eric...
Sounds like you married the perfect woman haha.. Mines really great too. Gave birth to my 3 children, runs the office at the shop and will hunt, shoot, gut and butcher her own deer haha oh and puts up with me :)
South Main Auto Repair Yes, she's a pretty good girl and ended up as my third wife, not to mention all of the other ones that I went through. And it sounds like you found a very special lady too especially one who can shoot, hunt and cut up their own deer. As for me, I've got two boys from my first marriage who are grown, married with their own children. Surely, I can't be getting that old...smiling...Have a good one Eric...
We have a Compass pile in with the same issue. I was searching around to find out what all those relays control then I found your video. It's 30 codes with all types of weird issues. At this point it doesn't matter what those relays control...Gotta fix that first!
Nice work Eric --O I always appreciate your video. I'm working hard here in Northeast Ohio, practicing the 500 most commonly misspelled words in the English language. ___________ A lot of times for words like restaurant, I'll just lock it in with ( Texas Ashland University ) this helps me lock in the spelling correctly. To that end, I sometimes think of your humor, when you say I didn't get my ASE certification or my ABC or my qrx certifications. __________ I always remembered that from one of your videos.
Hey there Dr. O. Thanks for the great videos and this one in particular! My Dad has a Patriot and based on your video I checked the relays and there were two relays with some corrosion on the pins. It was't too bad so we cleaned the relay side of the connector and will take the relay box out next to clean the connectors in there.
Thanks for this video. I watched it years ago and remembered it. I had a 2014 compass come in the shop today witht the p0480 and p0691 and i knew right where to look! (I'm a GM World Class Tech, and work on just about anything) You actually get your gm parts from my dealership.
Thank you. That was well made and very helpful. I was hoping to see the schematics on the sides of the relays or see part numbers. I saw three. and they are the same as three I pulled but there is a fourth that is different. I am working after someone else so I would like to confirm they did not already swap in the wrong relay by accident. if you have parts numbers please include or confirm all are the same as shown at 8:41
awesome video eric I think your videos should be just as long as they are now I think you learn more from you explaining the concept of whats going on and what your ideas on how to attack it and then showing the viewers the repair from start to finish to verify the diagnosis was correct. especially for newbies that are trying to learn I think its just awesome the way you do your videos .we both know from doing this field for over 30 yrs there is not 1 wrong way to diagnose you can line up 4 mechanics in a row and not 1 of them will diagnose the car the same several directions you can start with for me to see you diagnose it differently the I or someone else would is just awesome for me and a lerning curve I know its a lot harder and makes a longer day for you but I love your long videos
Yeah, here by where I live, there's an auto salvage company located where some of the old GM Plants used to be located at. What buildings were wrecked, they left the concrete floors which now act as the lot where they park all the salvage vehicles in nice neat rows. No mud, standing water, just like a parking lot. At any rate, They've got a lot of Liberty's. Patriot's & Compass's. You can even pay them a fee & they'll pop off the parts you need, so winter doesn't have to be your downfall. You order what you need, they tell you when you walk in that your parts are ready. Since we have a 2007 Liberty that I already looked at & yep, the fuse block & that relay block was starting to look trashed. As for my 2010 Patriot, I'll probably look at my fuse block as well & just get when I think we need, leave all the fuses & relays in & for that additional $15, walk out with loaded fuse blocks, which if they're all in good shape, we'll probably end up with $120 in parts, uses & relays for $35. Then once the weather starts to get warmer, I'll get my son to work with me & we'll just put a weekend aside & replace all those corroded blocks with newer/cleaner parts. I already replaced parts on her Liberty & man oh man it was nice to not mess with a bunch corroded parts. I just have to say thank you for posting this video because we actually have 2 Jeep's that'll need some clean newer looking parts to install, so all those codes disappear....
Great job. I wish the wrench who did ours was as competent as u. ! My wife has the same prob on her 2012. Spent 700$ in 3 visits in the last 6 months. Two visits with chrysler and one indie shop last week. He just bypassed the block to get her on the road. Fan is on full time now, But she is on a 5000mi road trip so at least it isn't overheating anymore.
@South Main Auto Repair LLC. Ya know, I believe that I fixed one of the problems on my 2010 Patriot. The ground Strap from the engine to the strut tower was corroded & shot, falling apart. The Jeep was originally from NY & now in Michigan.... I replaced it & next I'm gonna check the small harnesses that go into the fuse block & see if the 4wd! is corroded. I've heard that is usually why that light comes on & won't allow the 4wd to work. Other than that, there are actually no codes except the o2 sensors & I already know that with 185k, the cats are probably clogging up. If you do catch my comment, would you agree with what I'm thinking could be the 4WD! light popping on. Thanks & great video....
I personally like when it's a bad problem and you make t look easy by using your tried and true methods Professor. Garden variety is ok, especially when there is salt involved, but when you combine salt with e electronics that's cool! Just glad I don't deal with salt haha! Keep up the good work and nice camera.
A great video. I have two friends each that have Jeep Patriot 2008 & 2014. One issue is Abs wheels & the other is the trurn signal light. I found green crustys on the lower Relay box, also fine videos on ground repair stud in the same location. Thanks for the Jeep video. Rich S. USAF 81-85.
Well this isn't a pick n pull but I do work for the owners on there vehicles so I get to in the yard. Good to build relations with the local salvage yard guys if you have one.
It’s Better to be Thurrell then to get haft the story. You are so good what you do and when you take a guess it is always be a educational guess. Great video Nice camera work. Thanks 🙏🏻
Like dissolving soldering tips we're being had by Intentialy installed low durability components I guess it's job security though,we know who to blame and they know better,Good luck, great troubleshooting
Eric, I think almost every one of these Jeeps has that relay issue. Just checked mine and the relay pin was rotted off too, cooling fan relay i think. Good show!
You are really a good guy Eric O. I am saying this because of my experience with chrysler products people in my area. The cost and results are what has driven me to be self reliant. In other words to do it myself. The last fix I had ruined the engine. Sure they cleaned they car real nice but come on.
Great video! You should create your own app doctor Carr answer and diagnose questions for a small fee. You seem to be one of the good Mechanics putting the customer wallet first.
Where I live, the local junk yards no longer allow customers to walk through the yard and pull their own parts. They cite liability insurance, though I suspect other factors, too. Those days were great, while they lasted.
South Main Auto Repair No problem! I think I had more trouble tracking down the correct relays than with the actual repair :-/ Pulling the inner fender makes that area easily accessible as well, so that might be a consideration for some. We were doing ball joints and a tie rod end at the same time so that made sense for us since the tire was off already.
I enjoyed this video and I too save extra wiring with the clipsbecause it does come in handy as you mentioned its so etimes hard to remember where their at.....lol
Wondering if this could be my problem with my 2012 compass abs traction control light and 4wd! Light are all on will have to look at that relay box glade I found this video
Looks like somebody beat you to steal all the Chrysler Relays. I am happy you made that type of repair and you have some extra female connectors is ever needed. I hope you also charge for your experience even though you saved yourself a lot of time and could only charge for that actual time. Eduactional dialog is good, wire diagrams are better with dialog. Run to the junk yard is cool. Thanks for the salt test.

great job! I appreciate your concern for your clients. Checking everything before you throw parts at it. I really enjoy watching your tube vids.

As for me, I've got two boys from my first marriage who are grown, married with their own children. Surely, I can't be getting that old...smiling...Have a good one Eric...
I think we are only as old as we feel... that puts me mid 60's some days haha
Great Video, thank the junkyard gods for providing the parts on the first vehicle you inspected!
knunne1 Sometimes going to salvage yards you can spend a lot of time diggin that's for sure...
Little dialogue is perfect!! Keep doing what you’re doing. Very useful information. 👍🏽👍🏽
Thanks for this video. I watched it years ago and remembered it. I had a 2014 compass come in the shop today witht the p0480 and p0691 and i knew right where to look! (I'm a GM World Class Tech, and work on just about anything) You actually get your gm parts from my dealership.
Great work. Turned a lemon into a lemonade by going to the salvage yard.
Thank you. That was well made and very helpful. I was hoping to see the schematics on the sides of the relays or see part numbers. I saw three. and they are the same as three I pulled but there is a fourth that is different. I am working after someone else so I would like to confirm they did not already swap in the wrong relay by accident. if you have parts numbers please include or confirm all are the same as shown at 8:41
enjoy the dialog along with thought process into the customer's issues and the repair
Love it when we go on field trips to the junk yard!!! Thanks, eric
Excellent tutorial...just what I needed to trace the intermittent starting problems on my 2011 Patriot 2.2 CRD Limited.
Wish we had shops like this here.
Very good job. Thanks for sticking with it.
Love the video. Like to see troubleshooting problems.
awesome video eric I think your videos should be just as long as they are now I think you learn more from you explaining the concept of whats going on and what your ideas on how to attack it and then showing the viewers the repair from start to finish to verify the diagnosis was correct. especially for newbies that are trying to learn I think its just awesome the way you do your videos .we both know from doing this field for over 30 yrs there is not 1 wrong way to diagnose you can line up 4 mechanics in a row and not 1 of them will diagnose the car the same several directions you can start with for me to see you diagnose it differently the I or someone else would is just awesome for me and a lerning curve I know its a lot harder and makes a longer day for you but I love your long videos
Another great video! Eric is the best! If I could find a mechanic like him, I wouldn’t do my own work.
Eric, repair was done the smart way. Good video and stop apologizing you always do great...thanks
You’re doing a fine job “Mr. O!” Keep them coming.
That lower relay area on a 2013 compass is a B1TcH to access. Thanks GM!!!
Wow! That was a pretty nifty set of fixes you made there! Kudos, sir! 👍👍
I view videos like this before I buy a vehicle, then I try to make amends before I have problems.
Rich S. USAF 81-85.
Great video. My 09 patriot is having the same issues and I have corrosion in same place .I will pass this on to my mechanic. Thanks
Hi Eric really enjoy watching you solve the electrical problems, wish I could have got you to look at my PT cruiser.
Boy do I wish we had pick your own parts salvage yards down here!
Well this isn't a pick n pull but I do work for the owners on there vehicles so I get to in the yard. Good to build relations with the local salvage yard guys if you have one.
Gotcha. We have a ton over the bridge in the Bronx, Yonkers, etc but it's a pain to get there.
Oh got ya
It’s Better to be Thurrell then to get haft the story. You are so good what you do and when you take a guess it is always be a educational guess.
Great video Nice camera work. Thanks 🙏🏻
Man, what other mechanic would go to the junk yard? Can't imagine it.
Great fix.
I like watching it all your good at it thank you for making them.. From the UK 🇬🇧
Good show!
Hey I really enjoy your videos and length only means that I will get a lot of very useful info. So keep it coming brother.
Great video. Have a 2010 Jeep Patriot and now I know where to look as I have a p0480. Thanks Cheers
You are really a good guy Eric O. I am saying this because of my experience with chrysler products people in my area. The cost and results are what has driven me to be self reliant. In other words to do it myself. The last fix I had ruined the engine. Sure they cleaned they car real nice but come on.
I think the way you do your videos now are perfect ,, very informative ,, i have learned a-lot from them , thank you for all the book learning 😂😂😂
Great video! You should create your own app doctor Carr answer and diagnose questions for a small fee. You seem to be one of the good Mechanics putting the customer wallet first.
Love the more indepth longer videos with the Diag and Cramed with information Eric O great work as ways Brother @SouthMainAutoRepairLLC
Hey Eric great video seems like jeeps are notorious for tipm and relay problems and it's great to know that you can drive down the road for parts 😉
Thank you so much. My dealer nor I would have found the one wire to the relay that was corroded off. Would have had to scrap the patriot.
Where I live, the local junk yards no longer allow customers to walk through the yard and pull their own parts. They cite liability insurance, though I suspect other factors, too. Those days were great, while they lasted.
Great Video! An update on the relay comes up as a Standard Brand RY1676 Relay, also fits 2008-2012 Dodge Caliber Horn.
Nice, Thanks for sharing :)
South Main Auto Repair No problem! I think I had more trouble tracking down the correct relays than with the actual repair :-/
Pulling the inner fender makes that area easily accessible as well, so that might be a consideration for some. We were doing ball joints and a tie rod end at the same time so that made sense for us since the tire was off already.
Oh I see, Perfect!
Thank you. The OEM part number is like $30/pop but thanks to you they're like $18 elsewhere; I hope this fixes my GFs jeep!
LOL I was wishing you could hear me shout put in the dielectric grease...then you finally did it!
I live in Canada near you so I know about SALT!
70carlton I heard ya... that is why I did...
very good videos you make. thank you very much for the teaching.
Automotive Technology YW :)
Nicely done. Thanks for sharing the experience.
Just found your channel. Great video! Love the format and information
I like your video and subscribed to see more. Very professional job.... both jobes - repairs and explanation. Thanks so much from Russia!!! Good luck!
That junk yard didn’t look like Wilbert’s, the most fancy junk yard ever.
thanks.....love the long format video....keep the good work up...bob
Hey thanks Bob! One thing I am good at is being long winded. Work alone for enough years you'll talk to anybody..even if it is a camera lol
I enjoyed this video and I too save extra wiring with the clipsbecause it does come in handy as you mentioned its so etimes hard to remember where their at.....lol
I like it! Good job friend, thanks so much. Have a good day.
I like the road trip.......the junk yard...your the best!!!
Wondering if this could be my problem with my 2012 compass abs traction control light and 4wd! Light are all on will have to look at that relay box glade I found this video
You rock, as usual. Keep the videos coming. Long, short, don't care. They are all awesome! 😁
Great job and video EricO.
They are all very very good videos just started doing Auto work and learned a lot from
Looks like somebody beat you to steal all the Chrysler Relays.
