I remember going to that pier every weekend with my dad when it was made from wood and the 2 arcades they had in the early mid 80's. Thanks for sharing
@GummyRiches fishing was good back then used to catch cabazon, Opal eyes, butter mouths, etc all kinds if variety. Now it's Makeral, or Jacksmelt. The " Pigeons of the Sea" Everything has been fished out now since a single person brings 8 fishing poles.
redondo beach has always been my favorite place in L.A.. I’ve never seen this side b4 lol, this is pretty dope!! it feels like I was checking in on another planet or flying over deserts.. either way great footage
My parents took me there to Redondo beach pier when I was a kid. We would get some fresh crabs steamed at thr fish market and sit in thr picnic tables cracking open fresh cooked crabs. There used to he an arcade there. Then an R/C race track. There used to he an old submarine e moored in the small harbor open for tours. Boy that was 55 years ago.
All depends if there is a school of mackerel or bonito nearby. They swim closer to the surface and that's all I ever see people catching there. of course its not like the old days where their numbers were a lot higher.
I used to dive off that pier for coins from the tourist, starting in 1973... they never was a lot of fish in the waters there, but rarely I saw a halibut, & various other species. Mostly there was jellyfish. 🪼 there was a bed of sand-dollars there, like there is today. So although overfishing is a massive problem, at least the sand-dollars are filling in the seabed. At least it's not a desert.
Nice. It’s my home town. No wonder I never got any fish when fishing in the 90s. We use to hit manhattan pier and Long Beach jetties at night. All types of fish, we use to have a blast drinking cold ones talking fooling around.
Thank you for doing this video. Never knew there were so many sand dollars down there. Found a tiny one that washed up on the beach around the time this was made. I hadn't seen one in years, other than those sold in some of the souvenir shops.
I'm from Torrance California Friday n Saturday night cruise night Bumper to bumper along the strand that was crazy one big packed house Redondo beach pier early 70s Until they blocked off the strand then everybody would drive up to hollywood and sunset for another cruise. .actually spent the night in crab crates and fished all night There on the pier was a lot of fish back then We used to catch a lot of halibut And crab 🦀 they wouldn't let go of the line miss my home 😢
I used to go to Redondo all the time in the late 70's when I was in high school. Always wondered why there was so much debris in the water... crazy that it's still there! Had to wash off before going home 'cause there was so much stuck to me whenever I got out of the surf...
How did you keep from getting hooked by the fisherman on the pier? I would have been afraid they would have snagged me with a jig!! Thanks for the video. How deep were you?
My older brother and I got caught in the undercurrent near the Redondo Pier and started getting dragged out and got saved by my other brother. Thankfully we're still here today

Any sign of "The Edge" or "Cattleman's" restaurants down there, they were both wiped out during a huge storm, among other establishments decades ago.......
I usually use 2/0 circle hooks and 1 or 2 oz pyramid sinkers to catch the bat rays late at night but during the day it seems different, they spend more time higher in the water when the water is moving faster
I use to fish on that pier and never remembering catching anything. Now I know why. No fish... However, if you go into a kelp bed south of there you will find fish galore.
A lot of sand dollars! 🙌

Beautiful water world, a bit murky due to surf but that one ray you saw was stunning

Hi Ann, That arcade was the fun factory. Redondo beach was such a fun place to be back in the day :)
There was a submarine docked by the fish market back then!
that's cool the sand dollars. But where are the fish?
Fish are a no go in 2000s now in the 80s fishing was good.
All depends if there is a school of mackerel or bonito nearby. They swim closer to the surface and that's all I ever see people catching there. of course its not like the old days where their numbers were a lot higher.
Wow, I didn’t know all those sand dollars were down there.
It's the only place I've seen with so many of them
*Ya, they're starved, and filtering the polluted water in their maximum reaching position; they'll be gone, or along the shoreline soon.* ☢💩☣☠😵🪦

this shows this pier has no fish
I should show this video to all those poor saps wasting their time trying to catch a fish
It's a desert
So much for fishing there
There was a stingray in the beginning.
on the other side of the marina/pier where Polly’s was there were a lot of fish to catch , calico bass , bonita , mackerel , but that was 50 years ago
That sounds like a fisherman’s story to me. It’s always just “over there” where all the fish are 😅
😂 Sho thing Mr. Benny!
100 years ago, you could probably catch yellowtail and other fine specimens from the pier, too.
@@Steveorino123No for real, there use to be a lot of barracuda and bonito.
Cool! Grew up in Redondo. Fished a lot of the Pier and the half day Boats, etc.

I used to see sand dollars in huntington beach in the 1970-80s but not now? What happened to them?
I used to surf there when I was a kid. All those round things in the sand are sand dollars right?
One thing I notice in these videos is how strong the current is. People have drowned jumping from the pier due to it
Thought it would be a spider’s web of fishing lines!

Wow, so much sand which is there.
You should try the Manhattan beach pier, it used to be way bigger and had a giant wave motor on it a very long time ago
Have you ever dove on that sunken pier from the 30's that's just to the south of this one? It used to be fun in the late 70's.
Big question: sand dollars or scallops? Pray tell.
Just don’t tell the IRS about those sand dollars, or else they will want a piece of that clam
😹😹😹
Any suggestions on what to rig an bait to have an hooks ?

duwp. i tried just a hacksaw blade. needs the saw with fine. grinder.
Scuba tanks or freediving? Didn't get tangled with some guys fishing lines?
It's just the camera going in, I have it mounted to weight and tied to rope that I carry from above
That surprised me. I thought you were doing scuba diving!
I was there in the 90’s and ran into a massive Great White on the pier.
Remember people catching big halibut in 80s their, after the pier burned it change fishing there alot.
is there any fish there? I wanna go fishing there but i want to know if i can get any bites there

Mostly mackerel

You are braver than me. I was born on solid ground and thats a good place for me. Sharks eat slow moving warm blooded creatures. Nice vid. 👍🙂
Sad that there's no fish.

Any fish around ?
Have you done newport, I've heard there is a big whole to the right end of the pier
There is a reserve there. You can actually see fish.
What are all those things in the sand? Mussels? Clams? Rocks?
Sand dollars.
That's an awful lot of green algae for a salt water environment.
That usually means someone's dumping sewage in the water nearby
Probably Gavin newsom new clean up bill.
That location is the southernmost pier before the giant kelp beds of RAT Beach start. It’s just kelp flotsam.
Thought I'd see a ton of garbage...glad I didn't!

Do more at another pier
