- Joe Travers, currently playing in the Zappa band, blew us away with his incredible musical sensibilities in an amazing two-part part jam with Terry Bozzio.
Watch the second part of the jam, along with an exclusive 'The Art of Drumming' interview featuring Joe Travers & Art Tripp now on Drum Channel.

This Drum Jam is a great reminder of how important it is to use your ears if you want to be a musical working drummer. In addition to his contribution to Zappa drumming, Joe has gone on to play for many acts, including Duran Duran, Lisa Loeb, Rich Robinson (The Black Crowes), Billy Idol, Eric Johnson, and Joe Satriani.

if this were just going in the background 17 hours every day as i went about my day, i would not complain at all
I love that primitive-looking, tribal-sounding exotic arrangement of percussive elements Terry has put together.
Joe is a really underrated drummer. Can't be a slouch playing anything Zappa. Great tom work and great tuning on those toms as well. Really fit in with Terry's overall sound
I've seen him a bunch of times playing with Marc Bonilla's band. He is phenomenal!
I saw Bozzio at a drum clinic at Montclair College in 1993. I was in awe he was like nobody else. It's like each of his limbs has its own independent brain. Excellence.
I saw Terry with Jeff Beck , opening for Stevie Ray Vaughn on the Guitar Shop Tour,
and I will vouch for every (good) drummer and fan of Terry that his drum solo
was like nothing I've ever seen any other drummer can do, or has done in 20 yrs.,
when it comes to 4-way independence !!!!!
I was there also
Ancient and modern drums coming together. A model for the world.
These are the true ARTISTS!
Bozzio is one of the most imaginative drummers I have ever seen, and I love it!
Bozzio's sound is truly unique
Great contrapuntal playing by Joe. Gave us a real show about listening and complimentary playing. Terry was his usual brilliant...I think he has invented a new form of drumming...melodryhthm...
Terry being Terry. Jaw hit the floor. Percussion symphony. Nice to see him include the whole kit.
Well done, so musical and complimentary, Terry one of my all-time idols and i love and respect Joe as well.
And Dagmar …. Was his na-yay-yame …. (Sorry, couldn’t resist …)
I mean had this been written note for note before being played I don't see how it could have been more clean and more musical. Incredible. Can't wait for part 2.
I loved Joe's choices so very much. From 2:00, when he follows Terry's fill on the toms, that's some fast thinking right there. And then the groove he lays with the toms and the bark, while Terry establishes a melodie and then completely locking in on the 6 flams, THAT is brilliance to me. Thank you, gentlemen!
There are dummers and there is Terry , totally unique.❤️
Its incredible to watch how these two amazing musicians talk to each other without speaking a single word
Mesmerizing is the word
Fantastic video, Terry Bozzio’s musical drumming style is so unique, one of a kind. Also love Joe’s chrome wrap DW kit, looks and sounds fantastic with the clear Remo cs dot heads on it.
Awesome!
Simply wonderful! Thank you gentlemen.
That was a perfect collaboration. One of the best I've seen. Thank you:)
Man, this is so cool. Terry is the king of unique, melodic drum sets. I think this is one of his coolest to date! Great job with Joe too, knowing exactly how to accompany such a unique setup!
Fr man
Amazing.
In speaking of Bozzio and his soloing over ostinatos yesterday I was watching a segment that led up to a recent drum solo of Joe Travers . It was a quiet section during a Ray White guitar solo in Pound For A Brown. Steely Dan on steroids. Joe had a pocket that was as true as can be. It had me thinking of this Bozzio clinic I was at in Trenton NJ in the 90s , around the same time his first ostinato video was out, anyhow I believe Jim Keltner was also there and he was talking about playing in the pocket on Josie. Just creating that perfect pocket of sound and it all was symbolic of Joe's playing. Jim Keltner only used that snare in that recording of Josie that one time and used that snare never again.
So Bozzio's kit is always evolving and this new one with all the nature leather skins. We barely see full use of that kit in this first clip but Joe just did his thing, providing perfect accompaniment, keeping it real for Terry and just moving in and out with a groove and taking some moments of exploration. Can't wait to see an hear more.
I am ever looking forward to hearing more things from Joe Travers outside of his amazing work with The Zappa Band. While labeled as a jam this is nothing short of amazing, it feels like Terry and Joe have been playing together for decades. A level of trust in exploration and performance. Mission accomplished.
Hey Gary, you from Trenton bud?
Where was the gig at, City gardens, war memorial bldg????
Saw frank and Dweezil at the tower theater in 89
@@stevenspirito5672 Hello Steve, While I could go for some old school Trenton or Philadelphia Tomato Pie I am from NYC. Peace
@@garytitone853 If you haven't already seen them Mike Keneally has a few "bakin' @ the potato" videos on his channel, featuring Mr. Travers.
@@d5uncr Always great to sink my eyes and ears into that project, the CD/DVD that was released over a decade ago sits well, it's time to revisit and bake in that hardcore potato regalia.
I'm glad I subscribed to this channel!
Thank you for gracing us with this iconic duo!!
Amazing to see this. What a guy, and such great melody drumming. They build it up constantly, and its just gets better!

That is some truly joyful noise!!!
Love Terry's kit! Industrial vs hand crafted sounds. Nice contrasting kits. Thousand year old sounds from TB's kit.
Terry B was here few yrs ago did drum clinic , what a treat he was such a showman , so underrated all round. Great guy so down to earth and a musical genius. TY so much for post !
Over 70 years old and still playing like that. GOD BLESS HIM!

This video so emotional, musical and inspirational for me, cause I can hear not so hard, BUT fantastic tasteful phrases from Terry and Great comping from Joe! Pure ensemble!!
Also I think, that all instruments in their sets have brilliant sounding together!
This is pure art, then you can be a Musician but not only drummer!
Thanks for video and inspiration!)
Sorry for my English…😅😉👍
One of the best duets I've seen! Both these guys are so musical! Love it.

YESSSSS !!!! to France !!!
Cool 😎 you still got it
Amazing. Props to Joe Travers! Tasty playing, but Terry is still my favorite! 🤪
Joe can actually hold a pocket. Bozzio is the most overrated Zappa drummer by a long shot.
@@josephmarshall063 Yah. Um. No.
@@patrickberkery8854 do you even know what a pocket is? Or just a zappa fanboy who knows nothing about music? Name a worse drummer in any Zappa band, excluding the Mother's.
@@josephmarshall063 it's like you can see right through me! I have no concept of groove. I drum like Elaine dances on Seinfeld.
Truthfully, I was classically trained from age 9 and played 15 orchestral instruments other than percussion. I also taught and was student conductor. So I know nothing about music either!
@@josephmarshall063 Oh and all FZ's drummers are great! I never said TB was better or worse than anyone and I don't have to.
Awsome
Nice ❤
I saw the Zappa Band with King Crimson in Philly last year. Great show! I bought a Zappa Band T-Shirt. I was wearing that shirt at the Zappa Band show in the Philly burbs last month. I was chatting with a fellow Zappa fan before the show when this big dude comes around, slapped me on the chest and said "Nice shirt." I said "Thanks, enjoy the show!"
The fella I was chatting with said "Hey man, that was Joe Travers!" I said, "No way! Joe is really short!" A few minutes later as the band goes to the stage...Sure enough the big dude was Joe Travers.
There is no real point to the story other than Joe seemed like a nice guy and that I always think drummers are short! You drummers need to start standing up!
Yup, thats the guy who made Mental Hopscotch !
Joe’s kit sounds Amazing w/ those splatty Remo black dots ! 😝
Joe travers is a MONSTER DRUMMER, that 1st Zappa plays Zappa concert he just knocks it out of the park!.....well except if you ask him to do a single kickdrum, then "it doesnt register" :)
A few hints of Bonzo’s Montreaux here? Love it…!
Niiiiice!
Uaaaaaauuuuu!!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥
WOW
Compliments to the audio person who recorded this. Sounds cool. Nice work
Joe is great, his work on Zappa Plays Zappa is superb. Terry is Terry. What's not to like?
This might be the first time Terry has ever looked old on RUclips
