Is this update only really possible for v3 owners, or v2 owners with the expander? Is there another way for us v2 owners rather having to buy another Plinky? Or am I missing something here?

Yes of cours , it s compatible with all version of plinky ! You can update it ;)
The V3 dont need the expendeur
The V1/2 need expendeur
