  • Patrick Honohan, former governor of the Central Bank of Ireland, presents his new book Europe and the Transformation of the Irish Economy, coauthored with John FitzGerald, at a Peterson Institute for International Economics (PIIE) event on October 19, 2023.
As close academic observers of (and participants in the formation of) economic policy during the half century of Ireland’s membership of the European Union, the authors are well-placed to assess the remarkable advances that have been made and the missteps along the way. Clearly, the four freedoms of movement within the Union (goods, services, capital, labor) have all been ingredients in the story of Ireland’s economic transformation. But Honohan will point to an arguably more important over-arching mechanism: namely the way in which joining the European Union catalyzed a much larger opening up of the Irish economy to the opportunities and risks of an increasingly globalized world.
PIIE president Adam S. Posen moderates a discussion with Honohan and Ashoka Mody, School of Public and International Affairs, Princeton University, following the presentation.
