Thank you all so much for watching, I still have more KH essays coming this year and they'll arrive a lot sooner than you think! Let me know what your personal favorite piece of music from KH is and why -- I'd love to hear what you think!
Such a difficult question... probably Hearts As One. Hearts as One is really such a beautiful triumph of all the themes within it. I love Roxas and Xion so much so those songs really hit me. Yet Night of Fate and Traverse Town theme give me so much nostalgia - Traverse Town feels like coming home. I always find myself relaxing to Xion or Riku's themes too. The melancholy leads me to reflect. Anyway great video.
There's nothing quite like hearing the KH3 Dearly Beloved arrangement for the first time. I could be completely wrong about this but I have always felt that Yoko Shimomura truly understands the characters she is composing for, and this is part of the reason why the Kingdom Hearts music is so incredible. I'm always blown away by Shimomura's music and look forward to more beautiful songs in future games. Thank you for another fantastic video essay about Kingdom Hearts, Faux!
KH3 Dearly Beloved is my favorite. It had a sense of the end of a journey that might cost everything because literally everything was on the line, but we're going to see it through no matter what. Beautiful.
I feel like one of the most underrated songs to me is "Dismiss(Terra-Xehanort)" from BBS. The snippets of Rage Awakened/Terra's theme mixed in is so good to me. It really feels like Terra and Xehanort are fighting for control but, musically!
Another love letter out of the park! Yoko Shimomura is definitely the GOAT. 👏👏 There’s a word I’d like to introduce to you for the next musical deep dive: leitmotif! A leitmotif (I’ve heard both “light” and “late” but the first is more German) is that tiny nugget of a theme, a repeatable small chunk of melody and/or rhythm, specifically associated with a noun (character, place, thing). It is meant to be repeated or transformed and reflect the same of what it’s representing. It’s like the meat and potatoes of a character theme. When you’re hearing one piece and you get a throwback or a few soconds’ flash of something else you recognize in it without showing that thing’s whole verbatim theme, that’s their leitmotif. I really like thinking about how the cerebral decision that “I’m gonna sketch out an idea for this guy, or this concept, and it sounds ‘do do dodo do’ to me” can evolve and arrange into everything you documented so well here. Totally magic.
This was SO GOOD. The connected melodies of Sora's and Vanitas's themes (and Roxas's and Ventus's themes) are SO masterful. And BIG AGREE on the orchestral pieces from the games' credits - absolutely beautiful. Thank you for this wonderful video essay, Faux! 👑💙🎵
The music of Kingdom Hearts is one of my most favorite things. All the variations of Dearly Beloved were something I'm so glad that actually happened as I would let my mind wander in all sorts of different musical directions just listening to the 1st on KH1's PS2 title screen. From its subtle beginning to Birth By Sleep's heartfelt somber tune to III's grandiose entrance to Melody of Memory's March Caprice epic (my personal fav). Each iteration conveys the game's tone well before even playing. To think more are still on the way! Honorable mention to Riku's theme, another on the subtle yet powerful side.
As a producer of KH fan arrangements, I wholeheartedly agree with you. I have yet to meet someone who doesnt make a comment towards the music, I was so pleasantly surprised when someone who I could never guess knew of KH; commented on how he really loved the music that was playing while I was doing a KH2 playthrough. Lord of the Castle was single handedly the most influential and life changing piece of music in my life. I even dream of one day meeting Yoko and asking her to play LotC on the Piano 😅 Love the essay.
i've been playing kingdom hearts since nearly the beginning (i'm in my 30's now... i think i played the first game for the first time when i was in 5th grade) and very few game series have taken me on the emotional journey that the kingdom hearts games have. the music is a huge part of that. it's just so uniquely identifiable as kingdom hearts music with the recurring use of piano, chorus, oboe, and sometimes organ (one of my favorite pieces from the first game is forze del male, which plays when you fight riku/ansem, and the vanitas theme reminds me a lot of it). all of the character melodies are so heartwrenching and bittersweet. the world music pays credit to the amount of research shimomura put into crafting the scores (speaking of world music, the agrabah and hollow bastion themes from kh1 are probably my faves). i've looked up compilations of all the different dearly beloved themes and just played them straight through for 2 hours more than once. the kingdom hearts series is truly a musical experience.
This video absolutely hit the nail on the head. Yoko Shimmomura really is a treasure and we are so lucky she's stuck around all these years. Great Video!!
Another excellent video essay Faux. I do agree that both Roxas' theme and The Other Promise are very special pieces that add so much to Roxas as a character. The music in Kingdom Hearts is so special and something I always look forward to with every new title.
Hearts as One is crazy. Go back and listen to it and at the 1:53 mark in the song, it’s on Spotify or RUclips for sure, Sora’s theme plays for just a moment.
Fully had the same reaction the KH3. Also think this video really needed to give Xion her due. Her theme and Vector to the Heavens are two of the most emotional, powerful and well-crafted songs in the entire franchise.
Dude! Awesome, AWESOME video. I was so excited for this one because the music is something I always talk about from this series. Every single track in this video had me have thoughts and emotions of the games, and the memories made while playing them! I remember during KH3, I stayed up for 3 days since launch just to play without spoilers and it was all I could talk about were where various themes showed up and how great the music was. I don't think I could have a favorite theme, they all just do something different when I hear them. Yes, even Swim This Way lol
I love, love, love the music in KH, thank you so much for this video. I don't even know where to begin when listing my favorite tracks, because all of them pack tons of emotion. So I'd like to point out something else that rarely gets talked about (but you did and I'm so happy!) - how the original music for the Disney worlds still tries to fit in and wonderfully does so. I always loved the soundtrack in Beasts Castle. In KH3 one of my favorite tracks is the one heard in the Tangled world, it's so delightfully upbeat.
A wonderful vid as always, Faux great job on the analysis! I was a fan of Vanitas's theme, and you hit the nail on the head w/ The other promise too. I have to say, there are so many themes off the top of my head that move me, with Kingdom hearts. A few I can think of would be Aqua's theme, Riku's, and Xion's. Every piece of the score for these games evokes their characters well. Roxas's main theme and story will always strike me as the song of wanting to belong. There's a longing to find the place where he belongs, as much as Sora's theme is the epitome of optimism. Though that's putting the analysis mildly. As for my favorite piece of music: I've always loved "Friends in my heart" to me the song evokes the importance of connection, even when there is distance, its a melody that is so gentle and will never fail to make me shed a tear. Honorable mention: Namine's theme is also a beautiful piece and a favorite of mine for a very underated character.
16:30 Yoko Shimomura isn't the composer of Enter the Darkness, Takeharu Ishimoto is, and he's also credited with a number of other songs all the way from BBS to KH3, notably, Dark Domination, the final Xehanort boss theme.
What a great essay! SO, I particularly am attached to Lazy Afternoons. Specifically the version from Chain of Memories. I think it really weaves together that feel of a comfy, warm, nostalgic summer day -- while still feeling ethereal in some sense. Which was vital, I think, because that was a world crafted from memories that technically came from within Sora, but he feels disoriented, he doesn't know where this is, and isn't sure if he should. It's a sort of nostalgia that feels true and false at the same time. A memory that is there, that shouldn't be. I really connected with that song as a kid, but didn't completely understand why. The huge plot twist in my own life later is coming to the understanding that I suffer life long memory dysfunction. I was, and still do, directly sympathize with Sora in that scenario. Sort of peripherally knowing you should know something, but don't. There's even more layers to why this song is personally resonant to me, but suffice to say I love the series, it's music, and I look forward to everything that I can get my hands on!
Glad you gave a shoutout to Fantasia Alla Marcia,it’s my favorite song in the whole series too. And like you said very underrated, deserves more love for sure
I love the music in Kingdom Hearts, but this video has made me realize I've slacked a LOT on knowing the names. Like seriously, other than Dearly Beloved and Roxas' Theme, I don't really think I could name other song. This video has made me want to rectify that. Thank you so much for another great video! I can only wonder at how epic KH4's Dearly Beloved will be.
Oh, I hope they go with something super weird with KH4's Dearly Beloved. Though part of me thinks 4 is a "new start" for the series we might get something completely different entirely.
Your essays are always so insightful and well done. I loved this video so much. KH definitely has one of the best soundtracks out there. Masterfully crafted and flawlessly executed. And you've done an amazing job walking us through it. Thanks.
This was a wonderful, beautiful, genuine love letter to Yoko Shimomura, and her spectacular, awe-inducing works of music in the Kingdom Hearts series. This is one of Kingdom Hearts' finest pin points in the series and the first thing that attaches so many people to the series. It was so exciting to hear Olympus Coliseum's brass entrance in last years Olympics, a video game theme in the worlds largest sport and athlete competition. My personal favorite pieces from the series are: Lazy Afternoon's, reminding me of the summer's I would spend playing video games and going out with family in my childhood. Precious Stars in the Sky, probably because of falling asleep and taking naps to this theme in Kingdom Hearts II so much. The World That Never Was, the drums from it's intimidating, colossal castle floating above, the choir echoing in the streets of the towering skyscrapers, the piano showing it's true beauty as well. But my most recent: Nachtflugel, being the theme of the most feared secret battle, it's piano being the main focus, and the orchestra powering on as well. This theme to me is the theme of a False, Fallen King. That never came to rise, but has finally had the chance to rise out of his grave and rule for once. The king of Versus XIII, we all awaited for. I could go on all day of most pieces but here's a short one, this was a long comment, I hope you enjoyed reading it. May your heart be your guiding key. ❤️🗝
1:01 "I don't think we talk about videogame music nearly enough" hear, hear lol. Yoko Shimomura is so thoughtful in how she writes tracks for this series that every game has a unique musical identity in its original tracks that complement the story being told. I'm personally right there with you in thinking the "Fantasia alla Marcia" (KH2) is among the best tracks in this series. I do wish the credit medleys of the games after KH2 continued to play thematically relevant tracks that were more story-centric instead of the field/battle theme medleys that BBS, DDD, and KH3 have done...but I still think these Kaoru Wada arrangements are such great ways of musically taking the player on one last lap around the journey they've had over the game. This video was a lotta fun to listen to--I hope you'll make more videos exploring the music of KH (and other!) serieses. There's a lot that often goes unexplored with how sound and music contribute to media, especially if they're done in a storytelling way like the KH series has done.

Enter the darkness was composed by Takeharu Ishimoto not Shimomura
I was waiting for someone to mention that.

I completely agree - Shimomura is simply masterful at pairing music with character!
KH3 Dearly Beloved is my favorite. It had a sense of the end of a journey that might cost everything because literally everything was on the line, but we're going to see it through no matter what. Beautiful.
I didn't feel quite the same. It just blew my eardrums when I first heard it. It's just too different from original melody

Yes! It's so, so good.
Vector of the heavans is my absolute favorite. You can hear the self anger and saddness in it.

Riku's theme is really, really great. I feel like its underrated since it shows up a bit less compared to say, Sora or Kairi's themes.

Yoko Shimomura begins with SF2, but became a goddess with KINGDOM HEARTS.
Just as insightful as the last one! Definitely gonna have to rewatch multiple times to take it all in. Congratulations, Faux!
