i'm plant-based but I also study permaculture, and I know animals are a necessary part of a healthy system. This is great. Thank you! :D

Same in Western Australia in regards to carp. Silver perch are tolerated but like rainbow trout you need a translocation permit from fisheries department more for Rainbow trout, than silver perch. Silver perch tolerate the heat over here better than Trout a week of 25°C at night time will see fatalities. But in large enough system will get through

Hi Prcdguy Australia, you are right, trouts are not adapted to warm water. Silverperch will be ok but they don’t like being disturbed in cold water. More info here: ruclips.net/video/PFN77W3STx4/видео.html

@@AquaponicsRevolution Hey Jonathan yes I'm in Albany Western Australia so reside on the coast, tempratures may get cool but not that cold Hmm my certification is based on rainbow trout from egg to plate we could get them to plate size(350grams) from fry in about roughly 6 months depending on stocking density an only have bout a month out of a year in both extremes being on the coast helps as come 3:00pm we get a cool breeze (usually ) during summer an rarely several cold days rain yes but fairly warm when it rains here.
Like you turned to Aquaponics in my Cert 4 as a method of both filtration, dual income (greens and vegetables ) an benefits( recycling an reducing daily water needs greatly from what other wise we would class as waste water an poured down the drain.

With keeping several broodstock 20 males 2-4 years to 30-40 females 2-6 years this was depending on season an outcome of fercundity during spawning pretty much dictated their length of life. Females got up to 5.5kg in 3 years the boys may be longer in length but barely got over 5kg.

my aquaponics systems run on goldfish, but I have various fancy breeds and breed them, so the surplus fish is destined to be a cash crop (sold). they are less hardy, but the trick is to manage the system for optimal health of the fish, instead of optimal plant growth.

I chop earthworms for my small guppy system. The fish love the worms and the plants like the poop that was in the worm. It seems to be working so far.

the answer that i need, i actually do not have the heart to turn my own fish into food (the word is "Butchering" i think? you get the point) so i was wondering if i can use ornamental fish like the Koi and i live in a tropical country which according to you it seems the answer is an absolute YES, so all i need now is to think of some other methods to deal with the algae in case of outside pond aquaponics

    Great info.
I have numerous garden ponds. I have used the water from ponds to feed and water all my plants.
I tried aquaponics hooking up a small pond pump to two containers with granite gravel as media and strawberries.. They did amazing.. They are still producing and we have had 7 days of heavy frost

I breed a lot of corydoras, bristlenose, mollies, plecos and angelfish etc, so was hoping to help filter all their tanks by growing vegetables with all the poop and make even more money, I'm in Melbourne too :D I make my own fish food already, from vegetables and spinach and discounted market veggies blended up with prawns and beef heart, you can also treat many pet fish using salt only or garlic and food safe medicines like aloe vera and non-antibiotics etc

I am just starting out in aquaculture and live inland NSW where we have temperatures down to minus 8 degrees and up to the high 30 degrees in summer . I bought Jade perch 6 weeks ago and within 3 days they died because of the cold. I now have some small trout who are fine at the moment but the water has reached mid 20 degrees a couple of times and summer is just beginning!! If I have goldfish can I feed them with trout pellets. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Use a heater, the titanium ones plastic covered with a simple manual temperature control work well. Otherwise, dead fish.

I'm going to assume you're somewhere near the Wagga Wagga region. I've many a found memory of Gundagai being much like this.
The colder nights and hot days can cause the water temperatures to spike, killing some fish. Using a thermostat sensor to turn a heater on and off can help with this.
But for best results you may want to consider insulating the tank, and using a solid cover at night, and during winter.
Most commercial tanks are poorly insulated, being nothing more that a thin wall of plastic or fiberglass.
Having a lid will help to trap the heat when its cold, and the insulation will help to prevent the tank from becoming a heat sink, sucking up heat in summer, and bleeding it during winter.

Hi Roger, Trouts will not survive your hot summer, harvest them ASAP. Yes you can use goldfish, it’s perfect for you. They can eat trout food as soon as the size is adapted to their mouth. It would be good to add other type of vegetarian food aside as well as trout food is very high in fish protein.
      Keep us updated 😊

Just had an idea for another possible suggestion for you champ.
Two stage systems that only incorporate the tank and a grow bed, with nothing in between, are heavily dependent on the local weather conditions to set the water temp.
If this is what you are using, look at incorporating a sump tank.
If you have the resources and access to suitable land, you might want to take a look a geothermal heating/cooling.
I just remembered watching this video a while back ruclips.net/video/ZD_3_gsgsnk/видео.html, granted the old fella is moving around air to do the heating and cooling, but the same principal can still be applied here.
If either the sump tank, or plumbing is run through an area that naturally has a stable temperature, such as a few feet below the soil, it could help to
      Heat/cool the water.
Keep all pipes covered so as to not have them get heated by the suns rays, or cooled by winter winds, as this would transfer even more heat in and out of the water.
When it comes to the fish themselves, I'm of no help there sorry. But regulating water temp is something more along my lines, and your budget, setup, and site will determine suitably.

Tricky question. Another way to look at it is to compare your fish biomass to the volume of your grow-bed. maximum 1kg of fish per 50l of grow-bed please
