      Sorry you have sand.
      Just lay down a top quality weed barrier then go about building up your soil layer. Depending on how deep you are making your beds if doing raised bedding there are numerous ways to do this without spending a fortune on top soil. You can find many here on yt.
      Good luck.

    When I'm building solo, I use clamps to hold joints in place so I can screw them securely. Just finished a fence project that went quickly because I could clamp each board into place right where it belonged and not worry about it shifting.

    I started watching your channel about a year ago. My home was built in 1974 so it is not vintage but it has it's charms. It was a family home, and i have rebuilt and repaired it lovingly. I've been reclaiming and recreating all the grass areas into different types of food gardening. I live above the city's farm that they rent out to farmers, so we're all in this together :) we talk over the fence about weather and our crops. Currently because we are all in our Safe Havens, we've all been working on food crops and can wave across the yards to each other. As we go on, we will share food in the neighborhood. I have learned a great deal from watching your videos! Congratulations on the new home, and may your garden thrive!

    Hah! you may have explained a long standing garden mystery for me, with discussing the soil layers. Cucumbers never grew well in my yard, except for one year which had a huge crop. What I did that particular very hot year (without planning or thinking) was I happened to water the cucumbers by jamming a hose into the soil. Long before anything taking off, I noticed the unusual irrigation method was pulling some fine sandy looking solid to the top. Since the topsoil is pretty heavy clay I figured it may help drainage so left it going that way. With your description of the layers I now think there may have been some needed minerals in that too. Perhaps next season I may attempt to replicate the feat elsewhere in the garden.

    I also have a sloped property. Not extreme, but enough to notice. All the water goes west when it rains. Plans in the works to make drainage ways and a little bog garden where the water likes to just sit and sop around into the back yard.

    I'm out here in the sticks by myself as well, very familiar with growing an extra hand when needed! I had to abandon finishing a shed before winter because the frame was just too heavy and I'm only 5ft2. That's a spring project now, if I can snag someone with a lift assist. Is that your electric car? It seems to be in the same parking spot as the last video👀

    • @suburbanhomestead
      @suburbanhomestead  4 года назад +3

      We gotta do what we gotta do. The car is a gas model, because electric would not be logistically feasible were I am.

    Did you use pressure treated lumber ? If so aren't you afraid of it leaching into the soil ? I want to do this with a micro watering system , I was thinking of putting a liner inside and putting drain holes in the bottom to keep keep the side walls from rot , or seal the inside walls with an epoxy paint ? Any ideas ?

    • @suburbanhomestead
      @suburbanhomestead  4 года назад +2

      Hi Dave, I explain my choice of pressure treated wood in the previous video. The newer stuff is much safer than previous, but I don’t think they are rated for direct water contact. I would not use it for that

      suburban homestead ,so there is no moisture barrier on your bed how do you keep it from getting wet and eventually rotting away when you water your plants?
