    I struggled for many years with groundhogs, and tried several things to prevent them from destroying my organic vegetable garden. But I believe I've built the ultimate solution to protect your plants.

    Great job. Now you only have to worry about the small critters (aphids). I cover greens, cabbage, lettuce, kale, etc. with insect cloth the whole time so I don't get the aphids. My neighbors tree always gets aphids.

      The small pests don't usually destroy everything in one sitting, so they don't bother me as much.

    Beautiful! Like a gazebo :o)
    We have a small space for growing. (6) 4' x 4' raised beds and one 2' x 10'. In western Pennsylvania the weather is not really predictable anymore but we fall under the zone 5 grow map. They changed us to a zone 6 but that's not my garden. ???? We made aluminum tubing framed cages with garden fencing to keep the chickens out, attach greenhouse plastic to extend the seasons, and drape mosquito netting over to keep out the insect pests. Those veggies in need of pollination have the netting removed when they begin to flower. They are strong enough by then to withstand some attacks.

    Nicely done, Siloe! I've been following your progress. Btw, did you sell the other house? Is this one new? I would suggest to make only two opposing sides of the garden bed accessible with removable frames. The other two sides can have stapled on wire without frame. This would reduce the amount of wood required. Also, maybe you can add to this garden bed with a longer rectangular bed and build a hoop cover over it. Cheers! Love your channel.

      It has held well and worked wonderfully for almost 4 years now. I would recommend investing in the 4x4 ground contact posts for the corners and exterior screws, because I had to replace one of the 2x3 corners that started to rot in the bottom because of the screws, and maybe using the plastic decking for the bottom boards would be nice because they could last much longer other than that, everything else has worked like a charm.

By moving the wood, you don't move anything else so you are using the same set up/angle/hand you used for the first cut. The garden looks great. I have had ground hog problems for the last three years and they love my soy beans so much. I just put 4 large cattle panels around it and the some plastic fencing around the lower half. Why not 56x56 or something perfectly square anyway?

    • @suburbanhomestead
      @suburbanhomestead  2 года назад

      Yes, they could be 56 by 56, but chicken wire comes in 48 inch width. It is possible to stretch them a bit, as you see me doing later, but the longer you have to stretch them the worse it would be even by just some inches. I think I got closest to maximum stretch. 48 by 48 would have been more economical for standard lumber, but the proportion seemed too small for me. I wanted them as large as possible within the constrains of the materials. On an aesthetic not, an almost square can feel more pleasing in this case because the structure “sits” better. The overall structure is already taller than it’s wide, but it would feel even more had the middle part been square. This is about visual weight and can be seen in classical architecture. For instance, the base here is thicker in weight than the architrave. The roof is light with the arabesque curves, but it is still less than half tall as the central portion. These are proportion details that can be played around with, but when it feels right, it just feels right.
