No, he was definitely mad. King wasn't even really asking so much as explaining to the audience. He knew, he was forming it as a question for the viewers who didn't. Seinfeld's skin must be one electron thick.
Why do so many people think Jerry Seinfeld was being serious? If you are familiar with Jerry, you will understand that he has a good relationship with Larry King and was only being tongue-in-cheek. He wasn't sincerely "outraged" or letting his ego overwhelm his emotions.
"You gave it up, right? They didn't cancel you." That's said in a typical way of an interview - a way of confirming and letting the audience know. I didn't get the impression at all that Larry didn't know. How absolutely odd of Seinfeld.
Listen to the question again. He says “they didn’t cancel you, you cancelled them”. Larry knows he wasn’t cancelled. He’s literally explaining that Seinfeld left. Why did Seinfeld get so butthurt?

I have to say: there is something satisfying about seeing Jerry's notorious ego bruised for a brief moment, especially since it was entirely unintentional on Larry's part. Just a reminder that everyone is a nobody to someone. RIP Larry, you were a legend.
Nah, you're wrong. Larry King had a reputation of never preparing for interviews so he often came off like a douche inviting famous people without barely knowing what they were famous for. Asking the creator of one of the worlds most popular sitcoms if he "got canceled" is ignorant and borderline insulting. It told Jerry that King didn't really care about his work.
@@toggtlas7099 What am I "wrong" about? I said it was satisfying to watch, and I do think it was unintentional on Larry's part in the sense that he wasn't trying to be malicious. Seinfeld is notorious for being an uptight narcissist, and it's funny to see him a bit caught off-guard here when Larry didn't seem as obsessed with the details of his life as Jerry expected him to be. Or it was simply a misunderstanding in what King asked, and Jerry simply blew up because of his oversized ego. Either way, it's hilarious - and the joke's on Jerry here.
@@VideoAmericanStyle Your entire notion is wrong. Larry wasn't malicious, no, but as I just told you he systematically choosed to never prepare for the interviews and hence came of asking insulting questions. The joke is on King as Seinfeld notes that "people also goes down over time" and asks "Are we still on CNN" clearly highlighting the unprofessionalism of it all. And it's Larry that gets uncomfortable that Jerry calls him on doing such a poor job. Clearly you got some grudge against Seinfeld but I invite you to watch some more King interviews to see the pattern. A patter of king constantly asking insulting, rude and ignorant questions. The famous Danny Pudi "Larry, I'm on DuckTales" would be one of the more recent examples. You're just trying to feed your own bias.
@@toggtlas7099 You're projecting your own expectations onto the show, which is fine. But Larry never established himself as anything but a curious guy asking whatever questions came to mind. No prepared agenda, no bias, no outsized ego. That's why he lasted in his career for more years than many people are lucky to even be alive, and King's show in the 80s and 90s was the top destination for EVERYONE - politicians, athletes, newsmakers, celebrities, etc. It's like the easy listening equivalent of a talk show; and that's ok - not every form of interviewing has to be an interrogation. There's more than enough of that already. And for the record, I love Seinfeld's work, from the NBC show to his specials to his post-TV stuff like Comedian in Cars. But he can also come across on occasion as an insufferable egomaniac in public appearances. Funnily enough, Seinfeld and Larry were both on Conan the next night and they admitted it was water under the bridge.
given how very many years ago that was I wouldn't be surprised if he has gotten more mature - or at least I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt

Shows you how incredibly fragile Jerry's ego is that he can't FATHOM that someone doesn't know everything about his career.
To be fair this was common knowledge back then, and a good reporter would've known it or at the very least researched it before asking that question.
@@billwenham A good interviewer also knows that it is important to not assume knowledge the average viewer doesn't have.
@@Thomas-gj1zn The average viewer back then did know that. The last four seasons the show was always the number one or number two show. You couldn't really escape hearing about the show back then even if you didn't watch it. Like stated in the video 75 million people tuned in. That's over 20 million more people than Friends. Also back then magazines and newspapers were heavily circulated and displayed, way more than today, along with TV Guide. People were definitely aware.
@@billwenham Not every single audience member though. He was just clarifying it for everyone, especially since it had been a long time so a lot of people might've forgotten.
I have no clue about Jerry's career beyond that he has some TV show with his name in the title, then again I try to stay clear of common knowledge. Many times common knowledge is whatever the PR engine decides it is. Remember the prize here is eyeballs on screens and in asking that question Larry is very well researched indeed. As for Jerry? The man doth protest too much.
I love Seinfeld but I think Jerry got a little salty too quick. He could have said "yeah we were the number 1 show but I didn't want to do it anymore." Looks like a diva.

Pet peeve: When people see comedians angry and immediately say, "OMG! You fools! He's CLEARLY joking. Lulz. Hilarious!" Comedians get angry too, and in this case, I think Seinfeld is genuinely annoyed/upset. He realized he sounded like a diva/jerk, so he started to play it off like he was joking. I have to say: there is something satisfying about seeing Jerry's notorious ego bruised for a brief moment, especially since it was entirely unintentional on Larry's part. Just a reminder that everyone is a nobody to someone.
RIP Larry, you were a legend.
Is Jerry really known for having a big ego? I really would like to know.
