Thanks, I appreciate that. We all have bad experiences. I believe that you either defeat your inner demons and put them to work for you.. or you become their slave. I prefer to do the former rather than the latter. ; )
I'm a Schizophrenic who was molested, and you think this is where I get all offended, no, actually. This is fucking fantastic. Life for me is a confusing mess that nobody can make heads or tails of. This song is a confusing mess that nobody can make heads or tails of. On the off chance you actually see this Voltaire, good job, you did good with this one.
+Marquis Andrealphus Hahaha, the first time I consented to sex was when I was 3, I was made pretty much to multiply our population exponentially, jargon and data meant to replicate jargon and data in a population that fucks every 5 minutes with a mate, making the population bisexual... I had such an high libido that I was lustful yet caring, and pretty much consented to EVERYTHING... Despite that I'm not physically strong, and if someone wanted, I could be killed very very easily...
I don't get offended by much of anything. Life is too short for it and I am a minority too disorganized to have a voice, and I don't know if I want my people to have a voice.
Neo Nazi Neighbor Neil Why would I be? The svastika is fucking proto language! It came before words! Doesn't matter what it means to you. The language geeks in me is happy to see it found a use.
I keep coming back to this, again and again. It's too relatable, and it's a small, twisted piece of comfort. At least someone else has felt the same way.
Not only is this still my favourite album but after redescovering your music Voltaire...rhis is still I think one of my most favourite songs ever. Always gives me goosebumps.
:( Well, that sucks... I can't get your album on iTunes. It's not available in the Netherlands. Apple sucks! At least I do have the actual CD... Signed and all! Still love this album! Greetings from your non-goth fan!
You are so wonderful. You have grown to be a man that is to be admired and emulated, at least as far as I am concerned My eyes are literately tearing up right now and I am thinking "now way, now way, now way" as I think of a kid like you being put through something like that. You are one hell of a strong person if you came out like this after something like that. I admire you greatly. I hope you never falter in your awesomeness, but I send love and strength toward you either way.
Can't stop thinking of Francis Dolarhyde, the "Tooth Fairy" from Tomas Harry's Red Dragon... If it was an experiment Voltaire, I dare to say it was a goddamned succeful one! Kind of gives me the creeps...
I was trying to think of an intelligent way to say I agree with this aside from "This!!!" but I couldn't, so I will simply respond with just that. This!!!
I have many times in the past however, the Vancouver shows were not that well attended the last time I was up there. Toronto on the other hand, always sells out... so I've leaned away from playing in Vancouver so as not to make the promoters there take a financial risk on a show.
For many years, I had thought that this song was from the perspective of someone with schizophrenia. But there's something underneath all of that, something dark that prods at the dark areas of humanity. Brilliant Voltaire.
We all love Voltaire when he sings about dark things in a joyful tone, treating them like a joke We underrate him when he sings about dark things without doing that
Fun to go back to this after so many years. Reminds me of where I was versus where I am now. I still enjoy the song, though the reasons why have shifted.
I know the song came out ages before the film I'll mention.... But, gee whiz. This vaguely reminds me of the Masters Of Horror film Chocolate. It's so hard to pinpoint why. Voltaire, you sir are a master at your craft.
Glad to see an artist acknowledge this. As a student in an entertainment major I know that the promoter really does take all the financial risk for a concert.
Love this, that one line "And then the lamp shade smiled at me, it said believe it said believe" I'm just imagining a lamp shade smiling at him in a dark room XD
well I like to imagine what the sequences would be like for different songs in musicals, and this one never fails to be a pretty huge mindfuck. I mean, has anyone actually sat down and listened to the fucking lyrics?!
So here I was, painting away while listening to your album with my headphones up to the last, and an ad comes on and nearly blows my eardrums. Not bad, all things considering, that the last sounds I would have heard would be Voltaire
With the color of the trimming on your jacket in your picture, it almost looks like a giant head with tiny arms and legs. I looked closer but it still kinda looks like it some times when I come to this video
Two words come to my mind when listening to this song: sanity and reality. Such loose words they are for we cannot see, hear or smell the world through our skulls. Flawed as they are; our eyes, ears and noses let us experience "reality" which then is processed by our equally flawed minds. In such circumstances who are we to define "sanity"?
Maybe try coming with Fan Expo? That's a HUGE event here and could be great for bringing in new fans in the Vancouver area. I can always be hopeful :P The problem with going out to Toronto is that flying within Canada is $1000's of dollars. :(
Well, they kill mostly because of sexual excitation during the killing, they like it because if felt good. Sometimes because of the voices in the head, but killer with schizophrenia and with hearing and visual hallucinations is pretty rare. But sometimes they have violent temper and psychotic dementia at the same time. They just kill, because they like it or they want others to suffer like themselves did. Still awesome song, one of my favorites. And sorry for being bore.

Well ... Habitually, I have no problem to understand a song in English, even if my native language is not English, but can someone explain me the meaning of this song please ?

I'unno. Change Mother into Sister and suddenly this song is about me. So I wouldn't doubt that it happened to him. Rape is actually more common than people are willing to admit. Hell, it's common in the animal kingdom. Some animals only mate by rape.
No, "The Chosen" was written with the premise of getting inside the mind of a serial killer and viewing things from their perspective. It's a song about a killer.
I hate it when friends bring up virginity-loss stories, because mine doesn't make for good giggly girly chit chat. I was 4 and my sister was 5 and had to be re-potty-trained after, and he was by all accounts a great guy before Huntington's trashed his brain, then he died in a car wreck because why the hell were people letting him drive at that point, but not before passing his illness on to my little brother who died at 19. I don't blame the man, I blame the disease. Get my revenge by donating to Huntington's research. This song is cathartic, though.
I always thought is was about a male serial killer. Sexual abuse happens both ways. It's also a nod to quite a few serial killers of the 20th and early 21st century. Most of them came out of horrible childhoods and family situations.
He covered that in "Ask Voltaire" #2, or #3, I think. Write music. Work on making the art, and then everything that comes with that will follow. This advice is given under the assumption that you have yet to actually start writing a song, so no offense is meant if you already have. But don't take it from me, I'm just a fellow fan. Go ahead and watch the videos!
I think it's about a guy who has been plagued by visions of the perfect woman. He sees her and he looks for things that would be wrong with her, such as how she reminds him of his mother abandoning him. He is schizophrenic, wanting both to kill himself and the woman. His emotions finally fill to the point where he kills himself and the woman while trying to comfort her, saying that he is releasing her from him and from life. I think either he was chosen by fate, or she was chosen by him.
I don't have a favorite song of yours, they are all awesome (I identify with "When you're evil"). But I really like "Good Night, Demonslayer". Correct me if I'm wrong, but it talks about someone (father/uncle/whatever) who, instead of try to tell a kid that monsters do not exist, encourages him to think he is some kind of hero that defeat them. When I was a kid, I felt bad because my parents did not believed me. This song shows exact what all parents should do: believe it. Am I right?
well no :) it's just she thing's the "other" side of her looks her of her mother. and it was just logical for me to think that a daughter would look more like her mother than a boy. but oh well, i just gave i you my thoughts, i dont really care about if others thinks i'm wrong
It's an experiment in getting into the mind of a serial killer and trying to understand how they justify their actions to themselves.
I believe your experiment may be conclusive.
Is certainly accurate, just to a point.
@@mortyfray1337 r u

Sounds like you've accidentally read "Crime and punishment"
It's literal and based on personal experience.
Same. Love you voltaire!
Thank you! I love your music it is beautiful and is complex yet simple in a way that is unexplainable
Revisiting this album after a decade or so, because I have a cd player again, it's such a gem. Really strong debut ❤️💎
I'm sorry to hear that, I love your music.

the song is exactly 4 minutes and 44 seconds long, that is quite the coincidence.
I'm extremely curious as to the motivation for this song...
