- Footage of the May 1, 1976 Military Parade held on Marx-Engels-Platz in East Berlin to commemorate International Workers Day.
The parade was held in front of the newly constructed "Palast der Republik", however the vibrations caused by the military hardware caused some of the glass windows to shatter. As a result, the parade ground was move to Karl Marx Allee until the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989.

I also tried purchasing footage from NF in the past and they charge a criminal fee. I couldn't believe it when they said they charge 600 euros per minute of footage, it was so ridiculous! That was the moment I realized how much money and dedication you put into your channel, so kudos to you! Before I purchased my first footage, I didn't even comprehend how expensive historical film is!

This is a very traditional German Marching beat dating back to the 16th century, it's used in virtually every single Germanic march out there!
i may not agree with the communist ideology but i always find myself back here just to watch and listen to ddr parades.
The East Germans knew how to throw a military parade, I love studying the military history of countries from around the world.
They never achieved communism. The Cold War proved it requires the entirety of the world’s working class
DDR parades had nothing to do with the communist ideology. The DDR parades just kept the style of the German Wehrmacht of WW II..

German Archives I believe. It’s a shame they cost so much money to license, we are so lucky the Soviet parade uploaded haven’t run into this problem. Hopefully Maximus gets the funding to expand his channel, these videos are amazing! I had no idea all the DDR’s parades were still in existence, just hidden away 😔 maybe the same can be said for Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Yugoslavia, Romania, maybe even Bulgaria’s old parades?
@@avtom_ RedSamurai84 paid around $5,000 USD for his parade videos, but that was back in 2008 when it was very cheap to buy this footage. Considering he has over 20 parade videos.

Yes, the full footage is available for purchase. There is even footage of events that are not even mentioned anywhere on the internet! They have virtually every single military parade that has been televised in the GDR dating back to the 1960's, the earlier parades from the late 1950's are handled by a different organization called Progress Film.

@@MaximusandHistory Do you know if they have footage of the Bundeswehr‘s parade for GI de Mazière? Aside from Konrad Adenauer‘s, it was the only big military parade the Bundeswehr held which mirrored the NVA‘s. I‘ve only seen very few pictures and a small clip of the parade during a documentary and in colour even!

There are a lot of people in Germany who think that the “Nationale Volksarmee- NVA” (National People’s Army), the army of communist East Germany, would have been able to wipe the floor with their West German opponent, the “Bundeswehr”, but I disagree.
I met a lot of former NVA soldiers and officers after the reunification of Germany, served with a few of them together, and when you talk from professional to professional, the picture is very different.
The East German Army did a lot of things better than most NATO armies did. As their country was a dictatorship, the military didn’t have to care about public opinion or human rights and could practically do whatever they wanted:
-High readiness levels. An NVA armored battalion was able to get ready for combat and move to the front line in a few hours. The Bundeswehr, on the other hand, needed 24 to 48 hours to get combat ready.
-Well trained personnel. Soldiers were extremely well trained and prepared. Compulsory military service in the NVA lasted much longer than in the Bundeswehr and this meant more time for training.
-Better Special Operations Forces. During the Cold War, the Bundeswehr didn’t have any Special Forces. The military planners thought that our paratroopers were good enough for all kinds of missions. The NVA, on the other hand, had a lot of Special Ops, not only in the Army and Navy but also within the State Security. A long time after the Cold War had ended, I spoke with a guy who was a member of a State Security paramilitary sabotage unit. These guys regularly went to Western Europe to reconnoiter German and NATO military installations. In the event of armed conflict, they would have caused us a lot of problems.
-Discipline. The NVA was highly disciplined. An order wasn’t supposed to be discussed as it sometimes happened in the Bundeswehr. In combat, this is a big plus.
-Perfect maintenance. All their equipment was ready to use all the time.
This might look impressive but like many other Eastern European militaries, the NVA also had a lot of problems:
-Obsolete and inferior material. Although perfectly working, most Eastern German weapons were Soviet-made and technologically inferior to NATO systems. The NVA had only limited night fighting capability and their tanks (mostly T-55 and T-72) weren’t a match for the Bundeswehr's Leopards or the American M-1 Abrams.
-Dependance on the Soviet Union. The GDR (German Democratic Republic) was a satellite state under the rule of the Soviet Union. This was also true for their military. Therefore, in combat, the NVA could only be as good as their military strategists who weren’t Germans.
-Politicized leadership. What impressed me most when I spoke with former NVA soldiers, was how much they hated and despised their officers. In the Bundeswehr, you usually respect your commander, as long as he isn't a total jerk, but not so in the NVA: to become an officer there, you had to be a good communist first. Military capabilities only came second. Of course, this resulted in a highly indoctrinated and less capable officer corps.
-Incompetence. Unlike the Bundeswehr, the NVA wasn't built up with the help of former Wehrmacht and Waffen-SS officers. A former “Nazi” officer becoming an NVA General would have been unthinkable. The few higher ranking Wehrmacht officers in the NVA were mostly people that have been “turned around” during their time as POWs in the Soviet Union. Other high ranking staff had been fighting for the International Brigades in the Spanish Civil War. They were good communists, but terrible soldiers. In the Bundeswehr, on the other hand, it wasn’t unusual to see the bearer of a Knight’s Cross or a Panzer Ace. The Bundeswehr profited from those experts, while the NVA couldn’t.
-Lack of motivation. To have discipline is good, but it isn’t enough. Eastern German conscripts weren’t really willing to fight for their country. In most parts of Eastern Germany, the population was able to receive a Western TV signal and therefore, they knew exactly what was going on. I remember that many Western TV hosts sent special greetings to their viewers in Eastern Germany because they knew how popular their shows were there. When the Eastern German government crumbled, they made a last ditch effort to control the situation and gave an order to their most loyal army units to suppress the massive popular uprising. However, instead of obeying the orders of their superiors, these units decided to revolt themselves.
Despite all the propaganda and discipline, the NVA probably wouldn’t have been able to continue fighting for a long time against their Western German brothers.

The NVA, was trained 10 times better then any BRD soldiers basically a Mickey Mouse Club no one in west Germany want to serve in the military, that is why they made it optional to serve in social services instead military. The Abram tank didn't Come into being until 1980, so anytime before that the west Germans had nothing to brag about.
As far as hating their officers, that's like that in every military including in the west. You are biased in your opinion since you were from the BRD military. Having better weapons doesn't mean you will win, Vietnam, Afghanistan, etc. Without the help of the Amis, the BRD soldiers would have had their asses handed to them by the NVA.
Kosovo Liberation?, That's a laugh, it was an illegal invasion by the west as usual to divide the country as they seemed fit. It was a criminal act.
