- Naming of wind from the direction it blows. Leeway angle. Estimation from wake. Water track. Applying leeway to obtain leeway course. Assumption in applying leeway.

many thanks sir. well understood
Wath is the course over ground?
The real course the vessel is making 'on the ground', as if there was no water.

If I have a 10 Kt wind on my beam - how many degrees should I apply to compensate over a 1 hour passage ?

Leeway can be estimated by the ship's water track and course steered. Effect of wind on ship will depend upon windage area that is how much the area of ship is explosed to the wind. An estimate of force is velocity square/18 per 1000 sq m are exposed. Even this force will need to be examined in the context how loaded or light a ship is at that moment. Hence leeway is just an estimation. I am also looking for a concrete solution to provide exacta amount in all cases.
Many thanks ! There are many questions in the RYA syllabus for the offshore theory which include 2 or 3 degrees of leeway but not explanation of how they decided upon those degrees to be applied.
@@sailorstube3259 nice explanation sir , are you a sea- captain or naval architect by any chance, or just a genius?
