I'm learning this for the navigation part of my private pilots training and this is the clearest explanation I've seen. It's awesome, thank you for uploading!
Really interesting the many similarities in navigation between aviation and marine. We use different compasses and other aids at sea but the basics are the same. Never knew that.
Just started my journey into wanting to learn navigation, checked out youtube, and i could not have found a better tutor. Keep 'em coming. It's the first time in 66yrs i've understood maths. (Probably won't last).
So i am taking my 6 pack class online because of covid and got stuck on compass correction... Boy did i find the wright channel 😂thanks for sharing. I will never forget Add whiskey subtract ethnics😆
Been watching this since 2013 i think. Greatly helped because it very easy to understand the way he teaches. Thanks to your help im now a Chief Officer
I just got home from my navigation and charting course. You are the bomb. I learned more in your short youtube video than I have learned in 3 hours in class. You are a great teacher. I will position TVMDC vertically rather than horizontally .. yours makes much more sense. + whiskey - ethics rather than East is least and West is best or the other way around. Going up and down the chart is so much easier to understand. Thank you !!
17 years old, Familiar with chartwork but i've never looked into compass correction. You're very clear, and also you go over the procedures some might have struggles with. great job
I love all those mnemonics…TVMDC (add whiskey subtract ethics) or the other one CDMVT (add Election)…At the British RYA they use CADET for calculating from Compass to True (Compass add East True)…good job! Thank you Captain.
EXCELLENT tutorial! WOW. I bet this young lad would be a lot of fun to sit down with for a few wobbly pops, shoot the shit and talk sailing/boating. Glad I found this video, that was remarkably simple. I'm subscribing!
I am studding for my navigation exam for helicopter PPL, I see this video was made in 2012. I must say the clarity in this video is awesome even in 2019. Thanks
Great video, you explained this way better than most instructors. I like CDMVT it just makes since to me I usually skip these on exams but now I’ll know how to get the answer thanks for the explaining this so people can understand.
Does it matter that the deviation table is read both ways ie from PSC AND/OR from the Magnetic heading? IE If going from True you take variation and then the result (T+ Var= Mag) is the number to read on the deviation table. BUT if going from PSC then that is the number to read on the deviation table. (PSC+ dev = Mag) So if deviation correction was large then you would get a different result going down and up?
If I'm not mistaken this explanation is for the checking of your true bearing if it's correct or wrong. thanks for the easiest way of solving True bearing.
back from a trip to Bangkok where my gps-phone failed in directions. Now I have a magnetic compass for future trips around the globe on the ground. So the magnetic compass error is not a problem as a tourist I just need to know if I'm heading the right or wrong way on a street. I think I understand the purpose of the video is to calculate the true heading as opposed to magnetic. I failed to understand how this calculation is applied to navigation with magnetic compass
In my days (way back then) we used the following mnemonic.. which is easier to remember.. "From BAD to GOOD all is GOOD....From GOOD to BAD reverse the MATH" GOOD is the way you add the Dev and Var, East is plus and West is min.. GOOD stands for chart and BAD stands for compass... In fact the original mnemonic was (in Dutch) was: "Van de kwaaie naar de goeie moet ge der niet aan knoeien, van de goeie naar de kwaaie moet ge het teken omdraaien"
hey sir thank you for this video. i've learn a lot from compass correction. i hope you'll create more video about navigation. like plottings and more. :)
Got a question. Does your deviation table applies only in certain area?In case you are going to a different place and the value of your variation changes, are you still going to apply that deviation table or u need to calculate the actual deviation?
That is a very good question. It sounds like you already understand that Deviation is based on your ship's heading and Variation is based on the ship's location on the planet. Maybe in extreme variation differences you would need to create a new deviation table but my best guess is that the differences would be negligible. 🤔
Thank you so much .your explanation is brilliant ,would like to know what happens if the variation is 015 east ? Will we then just minus when we go down?
Are there videos for sunrise/sunset and azimuth/amplitude? I am getting ready to sit for my Third Mates Lic. and it is something I have gotten a bit lost on. Thanks!!!
Is this lesson to correct the compass for declination? i g as if i live in New Orleans my compass does not need adjusting w/ magnetic North an True North. But if I move to the East coast, I subtract 6 degrees from magnetic in order to be with True North? I still do not understand about Block Island. Are you saying the vessel is very close to it? Therefor, to adjust for declination 15 degrees? Then punch in the numbers of the rest. Then shoot my azimuth to go from Block Island to the next destination?
As said in the video at 3:40, when going from true to compass, it is plus west, minus east. Going from compass to true, it is add east, subtract west. Depends on which way you are converting. Hope this helps.
Question: Entering a harbor on a course 338° PGC, and 329° PSC, you took a bearing on a range and got 058° PGC. The true bearing from the chart is 060° T and the variation for the area is 14° E. What is the correct deviation?
I see many comments commending your teaching. I understand the lesson very well on how to correct. Where can I find the beginning of this segment? I am missing the basics. i g "T" are you using degrees as if my vessel is pointing towards Block Island; then plug in the numbers to correction to get to Block Island?
Carl Anthony Unsang 15 west is the variation we use on the Block Island Sound and Approaches Chart 13205TR to solve the US Coast Guard practice problems.
what is the meaning of PSC sir because i dont have enough knowledge of that ..im a 1st year bsmt student so i hope you would answer my question and it helps me a lot. thank you so much God Bless😇
Hi sir i want you to upload a vedio regarding passage planning .i sailed in offshore there was not deep passag plaaning and chart or publication . I want to learn step by step of the passage planing.
How is it possible to be so eloquent in delivery in EVERY SINGLE VIDEO you do.? Quite amazing and humbling. TRUE... lol
My wife watched it. You clarified a few things for her. THank you. Her teacher sucked at explaining a few things.
Glad to help!

hahah same
Thanks so much.
Had a hard time with this, now it's crystal clear!

Sat in class for 9 hours today completely lost. Add whiskey subtract ethics, simple saying. All makes sense now. Thank you
It took me 2days to figure it out for my Nav, but in 10mins i understood everything. the easiest way to understand. Thank you

Nice explanation captain, I have a lot of learned from u, from Philippines, future captain
@@ashzskiebiglang-awa1459 Thanks! I hope to put out a bunch more in the next year.
Your series are awesome. I’m just a recreational sailor but your videos clear a lot of my misconceptions. Thank you!
Always had difficulty in remembering this, especially when not practice for a while. With this video it has finally ‘sunk in’ Many Thanks

Me too, it doesn't help the book I'm learning from has errors in the mathematics!!
The best explanation on YT in my opinion, easy to remember, good job 👍
Thank you Captain... I am learning more from your clips than my weekly 6 hour lectures.!!!
You are the man. Your videos have saved my ass through out the captains course!
Hi Parker, let us know if we can answer any questions you might have about your captain license application packet. Thank you for the kind words!
So many years and finally got an easy way to memorize compass correction.
GREAT JOB !!! This is the BEST video on this topic I have ever seen. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much for all the effort that you do to teach us actully the easiest explanation I have ever seen in RUclips
great explanation, taking ground school for private pilot and I completely understand this now. THANK YOU
Love this guy!!! Most understandable explanation!

Great work young man, you are made to do what you do and well, thanks from a body.
Really good explanation i have ever seen..because of this all the doubts has been clear..Thank u sir..
Thank you for making the explanation easy to understand and follow.
Thank you Sir! I'm glad I come across of your video. Looking forward to learn from your next videos. ALL THE BEST.
Thank you sir this is the simplest and clearest explanation on how to do the Variation and Deviation calc
In school now you're videos are great.
Thank you very much
Glad to help!
I saw a lot of video about variation and deviation but only here i can memorize this principle. Thank you very much
@@ArtemZaurov Glad to help!

This is the best explanation i ever got!!! Thanks for this.
I am studying for a PPL and I found this extremely helpful!
What ppL means?
sir im from Pilippines.. i really like how you explain and solve compass correction.. it really helps me a lot ...
Thanks for posting these videos.
Thank You , Thank You , Thank You , Thank You , Thank You , Thank You !
finally I understood this !
preparing for my ATPL GNAV test .
Thank you for taking your time to make this video. It is very helpfull and I realy enjoyed watching it !

Hugo McNestry I know what you mean, good point. In these problems deviation is never more than 4 degrees so it works.
Very good explanation ! Thank you very much !!!

you are a very good tesher ! I now notting from the see and i d'ont speek the languitsh but i kan understand !! Thanks
Thanks captain.
Very clear explanation 👌
Thanks a lot Sir! Very clear and good explanation.
TVMDC- LO MENCIONO MUCHO DE OTRA MANERA EN ESPAÑOL (TITO VIO MARÍA DESPUÉS COMER) (Compass add East True)…good job! Thank you Captain
Can you please tell me
Why we always add east in case of getting true course from compass course, why not substract
Werd you get 15 degrees west in both examples for variation
It is a given on USCG Questions for Block island Sound and Approaches 13205TR. You can find it on the compass rose of the chart as well.

Absolutely brilliant. Extremely clear thank you
Sir can I ask what is the meaning of PSC in the compass?
The most common definition I hear and the one that makes sense to me is "per ship's compass"
Yes thank you .always come back to this video for studies
"I'm not a bad person, this is just a saying." 😂
Hello, can you explain please why do we use the minus (- ) with East? I've studied that East is used only with plus( + )
As said in the video at 3:40, when going from true to compass, it is plus west, minus east. Going from compass to true, it is add east, subtract west. Depends on which way you are converting. Hope this helps.

If possible please upload a video of how to interpolate the height differences at secondary port calculations..
On 14:04 how did you came up with 15w value? Where is the basis? Though normally variation is shown on GPS magnetic heading

the TVMDC iPhone App does all of this in one neat App. TVMDC, Set & Drift and CTS all in one.

Or you can use the Numonic " TV makes dull company "
any formula to round the value off to nearest number ?
Awesome Explanation. Thank you
sir, what to do if there is no deviation in the problem? and how can I get the True Bearing? please help asap. thankyou
Hey man,
Great video. Where would you actually use this? A real life example where youre out at sea would be very helpful.
Brilliant explanation THANK YOU!!!
Howzit man, thank you very much!!! This definitely helps a lot!!!
Is Biscayne Bay (Miami) considered Inland Rules or Colregs?
Find the compass course to steer to make good a true course of 130 degree. If the variation is 20-degree West and deviation is 10-degree East.
Sir 056degree now to FOLLOW on which compass (plz make it clear)
Very good. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks sir. so clear,

Really awsome.man keep it up

So in the last one it means that if I`m on ship and if I`m steering 90 degree course in real life on earth I`m moving with 77 degree course , right?
