  • Of all the trendy fitness programs I hear about, one stands out in particular: barre. It seems like only women participate in this unique workout regime, which incorporates technique and conditioning used by ballet dancers.
It's easy to understand that men might shy away from a workout with such a description. That being said, everything I'd heard about barre suggested that it offers a full-body approach from which both sexes can benefit.
I got the chance to see what barre is all about in a private lesson studio owner and instructor Katie Muehlenkamp at the Bar Method location in Brooklyn, NY.

Somehow "working to the point of exhaustion" doesn't sound like a good thing?

Hmmm… “ - we work them to the point of exhaustion “, where have I heard something like that before?…
“shock the muscle, shock the muscle, shock the muscle”.
Working the muscle till exhaustion, training till failure; am I sensing a similarity here rather than something new an exclusive to this type of class?

Barre classes are based on the Lotte Berk Method, which was created in 1959.

Umm not really... barre is based on ballet, and I'd hardly call it a scam. It's a fantastic workout and pretty fun to boot (and I rarely call a workout "fun" unless I mean it).

Its actually been around since the 50's and ballet has been around much longer. Clearly they have something working.
