you do have good points, i still dislike the movie though, when you talked about laurie finding out that Michael wasn't after her you failled to explain that it is still out of character because he just killed her daughter and there is no way that a mother would ever forgive that.
Also, you tried to justify the weak Michael as old Michael, but in 2018 he was old, in kills he enaled (sorry for the bad english) smoke, got out of the house and killed young firemen in shape, this showed that Michael heals very fast, even at the end of the movie after the beating he still gets up and is still stealthy enough to pass through the cops and kill Karen, if the moob made such damage why it would take years to mannifest? If that was the real reason for michael to get weak it would happen right away and get better with time, not the oposite. Again you have good points, know how to talk but i do feel like you tried really hard to enjoy this movie and you overlooked some stuff for it to work for you.
that said great video, keep the good work 👍

Appreciate the kind words man. I'd like to clarify some things though because I don't feel like I was overlooking things. You're right that a mother would never forgive something like that, and the movie makes it clear that while Laurie is trying to put up this facade of having moved on, she really hasn't. We see the mask break down a couple of times, so what it seems to be is that she saw that her pursuit of Michael was fruitless and only brought Karen into a position where she was killed by him, so she's probably trying to force herself away from that obsession out of fear for something happening to Allison if she keeps going on the way she was. That's how I see that element. Regarding Michael's age, I don't remember if I said this in the video or not (I think I did but it's been a while), but the way that I look at his strength in this trilogy is like this: Michael Myers is the Boogeyman, but he's still a 60 year old man. He'd been locked away for 40 years building up to the moment where he was finally free again, and we see that sort of burst in Halloween 2018. Then in Kills, I've always seen the burning house as kicking off a sort of final explosion of mayhem from the boogeyman, which is why he's such a beast in that movie. He had this pent up energy, but he's still an old man, and after letting it all out and getting beaten into submission all he could muster was the last outburst of Michael Myers, which is the mob killing. That was the last of the boogeyman, and then the husk went to rot away in the sewer after, which is what we see in Ends. Hope that clears things up. Thanks again my dude

Also I'd like to add, something that I think would fit into Laurie's character is maybe she seemed to "let go" because we also know the mistakes she made with her daughter and it would be logical to me she wouldn't want to repeat the same mistakes with Allison. That made sense to me so I wasn't bothered with that aspect of the story.
And talking about Michael being weak, I simply stuck with the line: "the more he kills the more he transcends" so, if he's just been waiting there without killing he would be weakened, that also seemed kind of logical to me, but of course that would mean I lean into the "supernatural" Michael side 😅

    • @lex_rodriguez
      @lex_rodriguez 5 месяцев назад +13

Dude, it blows my mind how nobody gets that decision/needed it to be spoon fed to them. Laurie WASTED her entire life preparing for Michael so that her family would be safe, sabotaging her relationship with her daughter, just to ultimately fail as a protector and as a mother. She lost - and accepted that she lost. Getting revenge wouldn't have done anything except further strain her last relationship and at that point her granddaughter was her only priority, only wanting to spend as much time with her as she could, not wanting to waste the remainder of her life like she had all those years away from her family. Her obsession is what got her family killed, so why would she repeat the same mistake? That's the last thing wrong with the film.

    • @TheAvenidas
      @TheAvenidas 5 месяцев назад +11

@@lex_rodriguez because life is that way, even if you want to let something go, sometimes you can't, in 40 years she suffered because her friends were killed, in 40 years she kept that pain but in 4 years she lets it go? After her own daughter died? sure what you say has a logic, but you can't apply logic to trauma it is not easy to surpass. And it is super out of character for laurie strode , she goes from "i'm coming for you michael", to lets chill too easly, that is not her.

They should’ve had this be the second movie, have Michael come back at the end of kills to kill Cory like he did, fight Laurie for a bit but escape, kill Laurie’s daughter in the house but have Karen activate the fire just before she dies burning Michael. Beginning of ends would be the fire scene, cue everything else up to the street fight, Michael gets badly damaged but finishes everyone which is when Laurie comes into play to fight Michael for the finale

Loved that this entry in the franchise by trying something different that wasn’t too far out there (no Thorn cults!). This film had to move the story forward beyond one night and offer more than Michael stalking and slashing his way through Haddonfield. It explores the nature of evil, the lasting effects of trauma on a community and moving past that trauma. Michael’s evil infected Haddonfield so much it created another boogeyman because of the fear he instilled in them. This is bigger than Laurie versus Michael. The OG and first film in the trilogy focuses on Laurie. The second is Karen’s story and now we see Allison dealing with the aftermath of Meyers. That is pretty complex and compelling themes for a slasher film. Maybe it was too complex for audiences wanting just gore and violence with no commentary or subtext. I appreciate it as a cut way above typical slasher fare and actually prefer it to “Halloween Kills”-enough with the “evil dies tonight!” already.

I really can't express how much I appreciate this. I've been a huge fan of this franchise for more than 40 years and I love Ends. I think it's one of the best entries. That was not a popular opinion to have when it was released, and it's not one now, but I think that, as time moves forward, this movie will be revisited and reconsidered and eventually celebrated. It recalls Scream 3 thematically for me, but also in the characterization and character development of Sidney; it's all interior work, but it's present on the screen through Neve Campbell's performance, and I think the same is true here of JLC. Both have always been so committed to portraying their heroines as actual people and not just a trope. I really applaud that.
I also applaud you for this thoughtful, cogent, and nuanced presentation. Truly excellent. For my two cents, when Corey looked into Michael's eyes, I am of two minds: one, he looked into the voids of those eyes and found nothing, which to him perhaps heralded the promise of relief, if not happiness if he followed suit; or, two, Michael looked back and Corey deemed that acceptance or even permission of his desire for revenge. Not sure which is scarier, tbh. I think the whole supernatural thing was a marketing feint they never intended to answer. At least they learned that much from the Thorn trilogy.

I want that room for interpretation. Thanks again for the kind words and for indulging this video!

I love how Corey's transition into a coldblooded killer is steady and not immediate. First, he accidentally dispatches Jeremy. Second, he acts in self-defense against the vagabond. Third, he assists Michael in murdering Mulaney and continues teaming up with him in taking out Alyson's coworkers. From there, Corey embarks on a one-man revenge tour of brutality. He may have been possessed by the shape's essence, but he still made diabolical choices the more that he developed his lust for blood.

The idea, at least from what I could gather is that Corey was suppose to be one off. Think about it. Michael is old terror, long forgotten and he is in sewers far away from public eye. But from his legend new, modern legend is created (Corey), only for old evil to returns and takes over once again, because people will always go back to classic stories.
If you think of what happens in Halloween Ends in meta way, the entire movie actually makes more sense. This is why I actually kinda, sorta, maybe, like that movie, however it was not well implemented because it felt like watching entirely different movie. I remember at one point looking at clock and asking myself "why am I even watching this and not Halloween 2 or 4?" They had good idea, but not enough refining to pull it off.

I'm so glad that I'm not alone on this. I agree with genuinely every single point you make in this video, every single one of the pros and cons is EXACTLY how I see this movie too (except for the fact that I haven't delved into the novelizations of any of the movies).
The thing that I think sums it up perfectly is like you said at one certain part in this video which is - It gives you more than just a slasher and a "turn your brain off" kind of thing.
No, it actually gives so much more themes, and it's very creative and brave in taking it's own route, and although you mention a few times how the trilogy in it's entirety wasn't exactly planned out perfectly, hence leading to some inaccuracies etc. I LIKE how this movie gives us the idea that Myers is, without a shadow of a doubt, a CONCEPT. Myers quite literally represents evil, to the point where it doesn't even need to be Myers anymore, it shows that there simply IS evil in this world and the scary thing is that there doesn't need to be a "Myers" in question - the evil can be inside anyone and can come from anyone.
Another small thing I personally liked about this movie is that it somehow gave me a sense of a "cult", like Corey is worshipping this entity (Myers) and he is killing in it's name, and even bringing a body to be killed by it, even being related to how that body early in the movie is dragged into the sewers too by this mysterious entity that hungers...
Overall there's so much I like about this movie simply because of it's extra steps and that it isn't just a pure mindless slasher, which I do understand is what most of the audience is looking for in this/these movies but I'm grateful that this one, and also the trilogy too in a way, gives us much more.

@@RocklinGraves Why be nervous? I actually think it’s great when I meet someone’s whose views on horror films differ from mine. I’ll be the first to admit that being older and seeing a lot of classics during their first run in theaters, I tend to notice reference points from other movies and instead of seeing something like T2 as an original work, I’ll take away originality points for not making the films that influenced it more subtle, like a rip off vs. a homage, but that’s a me problem. Where can I find your ranking and do you have a Reddit page?

I agree that the first one was the best. However, H2O and 4 are way too high on the list, IMO. I loved Ends. I feel that it's the third best of the franchise. I thought:
      1. Halloween
      2. Halloween Kills
      3. Halloween 2
      4. RZ Halloween
      5. Halloween Ends
      6. Halloween 2018
      7. RZ Halloween 2
      8. Halloween 4
      9. Halloween H2O
      10. Halloween 6
      11. Halloween 5
      12. Halloween Resurrection

100% with you on this movie. Any of your points feel like they could be my own written words. I love this movie and the entire Trilogy a lot and think David Gordon Green did Halloween so much justice.
I will always love the whole Franchise, i will always love all the Timelines - but this, now 4 Movie, Timeline is just perfection for me.
I loved the very different approach and i loved how they not just amped up the Killcount to finish the Story - it became a more intimate Meditation on Evil and how it comes to be. Its not "perfect", but to me it felt like it undermined expectations in a way i did not expect - and i love it for that.
I'm happy how they finished it - and now i am looking, not without concern i gotta mention, forward towards the planned TV-Show and whatever will come next for the Franchise.
But i am not hoping for something even close to the goodness David Gordon Green brought us.

I teared up too during the flashback scene when his hand was choking her and she said “do it”. When we see her from 1978, my immediate thought was that poor girl. I totally teared up.
Regarding the part when Corey was in the empty house sleeping. What made me believe she was there was because of her clothes. She was wearing that at the end of the movie.
I also think that Michael was there. Corey looked up the stairs and said something like “do you want to do it or me do it?” I just assumed he was talking to Michael.
With that said, I will never have faith in DGG as a film maker again. He had the original actresses from 1978 with Jamie Lee Curtis and Kyle Richards and just wasted them in this movie.
If he wanted to make a love letter to Christine, it should not have been with this property and these characters and original actresses.
In 1978 Laurie was his target the moment he saw her at the old Myers house. It should have remained that way for these films. DGG blew it. But that’s just my opinion.
Really enjoyed your video! Very much so.

But I am so bewildered when anyone takes this stance on Halloween Ends. I'm just in a state of non understanding - how does anyone watch this movie and do anything other than laugh/yell at it's ineptitude. It's just objectively awful. Nonsensical writing, character motivations make zero sense. I'm baffled. Please explain...

I feel the curse of throrn theory is a decent explanation. He went from being a relatively "normal" kid, to suddenly committing murder for absolutely no reason. I love the idea of the cult that the neighbour was part of, put the curse in him. With this curse, brought supernatural abilities. Making him invincible, helping him heal from injuries and become stronger with kill. He seemed to have a pull towards killing anyone who was baby sitting (beginning with Judith who was supposed to be baby sitting Michael and taking him trick or treating). However, this only being done on halloweens which have a full moon, which would fall into the curse of thorn. Michael lost the house when it had been destroyed, as besides murder, he was set on being at the house and I suppose protecting the house. Losing it, weakened the curse dramatically but killing would have given him some strength back. This would (to me anyway) explain why he is so weak in this movie, but he was invincible in the previoud movie and the house being intact.
Michael losing the house, made him easier to destroy and have little to no strength to fight back to corey especially. Corey (having Michael's abilities after the transfer) became the strength, showing a supernatural element to Michael and how much he relied on that curse to survive and overpower everyone and every injury sustained for 44 years.
Also if you go to back to when Michael's mask is off infront of little Jamie, he sheds a tear after she calls him "Uncle?" . This to me the, what you could call, real Michael is in there. He is existing inside of his body, but unable to control what he does and what happens to those around him due to the curse. Like a possession. "Real Michael" wants to escape, but is stuck.
This is just my opinion. Others may feel different and that's fine. I just feel this makes sense.

I liked Halloween Ends. I was a little disappointed when Mike killed his protege...but in a good way. It was like he was saying, "You've failed me. I'll take it from here!" Also, I like the fact that Mike aged. He was slower, awkward, and no longer invincible. He finally died...or did he? When Lori said, "Evil doesn't die. It changes shape," it was reboot fuel. I wonder what the next Shape will become...because you know Halloween will never truly die because it's now a part of our culture.

Honestly, Halloween Kills should have wrapped up the trilogy, that being:
    1.Halloween 1978
    2.Halloween 2018
    3.Halloween Kills 2021
Kills should have trimmed out the fat and ended with the fight Laurie and Michael had in Ends, with Michael vanishing again in the end, but suggesting that he will die from his wounds, with that being Michael's send off.
If they really wanted a third movie, Halloween Ends could have just been Laurie's send-off. Ends should have been entirely about Corey, with him finding Michael's corpes in the sewer, taking the mask from the body (cementing that while Michael is just a man, that evil can live within anyone and be passed down to anyone). The whole sidekick thing really doesn't work. Then if they really wanted to commit to the "Michael is Jason" portrayal from Halloween Kills, they could have just made him a zombie - if not, just ended the franchise there. Thst way we have a good trilogy including the original and the Gordon Green trilogy with Halloween Ends being an epilogue. Ends doesn't work because Michael himself is barely apart of the story - he's just crammed in there because he had to be.

MICHAEL WAS GOING AFTER LAURIE! HE WAS ALREADY WALKING TO HER HOME WHEN HAWKINS AND VOLTAN HIT HIM WITH THE CAR. AND! This does not rule out Michael as Laurie’s brother. It simply is NEVER revealed. This is an alternate history that picks up after the original. So no one tells us Laurie’s family ties. But that’s only one aspect of the story being horrific. The horror of Michael is sparked again by the mask. Not Michael himself. Which really does make Laurie’s last reflective words in the movie even more telling. “Evil doesn’t die, it just changes shape.” Looking forward to see what’s next for Halloween. With or without Michael. Rumor: I stated the lack of Laurie’s family history connecting to Michael….. due to Allison most likely discovering this and thinking Michael’s back when he’s not. It’s just the evil that once held his shape. Making things really interesting.

As far as Michael being able to take down the mob at the end of kills
A lot of that could be attributed to adrenaline or the fact that he is someone who either doesn’t feel pain or is slightly more than human
After being shot six times at the end of the first movie, he was given medical treatment
With all the damage that he sustained at the end of kills, and then just went into the sewers
If you don’t clean wounds, regardless of who you are, it is going to come back to bite you

  • @Bobby_Hall
    @Bobby_Hall 4 месяца назад +1

Nice review! I like how much you focused on the music. I agree that the dialogue between Corey and Laurie in the Allen house is probably a hallucination Corey is having. Some people have claimed she really is there because later on in the movie she’s holding a paper airplane. But in the scene at the house she threw the paper airplane before leaving. I doubt she would’ve taken the time to pick it up. Also, the chair is leaning against the wall when she’s gone. So either she did that on purpose right before she left or she got out of the chair while leaning against the wall. Neither of these makes much sense, so it was probably a hallucination.
I like Ends quite a bit but I have a few criticisms. I’m surprised there’s no mention of how Laurie dealt with the realization that Michael wasn’t after her. When Hawkins told her that in Kills she doesn’t react or say anything about it, which I found very odd. I was pretty sure it would be addressed in Ends, but it wasn’t. She wasted 40 years thinking Michael wanted to come after her again, so I think the revelation that she meant nothing to him would’ve been a devastating blow to her. Maybe it was, but we don’t get any indication of what she went through regarding that.
I think Hawkins should’ve had a bigger role. I would’ve liked to see him get some kind of redemption. There was an interesting parallel between him and Corey where they both accidentally killed someone. Hawkins “got away” with it while Corey didn’t, so I think there was an opportunity for Hawkins to reflect on his own past and confess to the family of the cop that he accidentally killed.
My biggest issue with the film is something I never see people discuss: Laurie not reacting to the fact that Corey was wearing Michael’s mask. I can understand Allyson not reacting to it because maybe she didn’t see it or was just too upset, but Laurie was calm and collected. Why wasn’t she shocked that Corey had Michael’s mask? Her head should’ve been spinning with all the possibilities: Corey could’ve killed Michael and taken his mask, he could’ve found the mask somewhere, he could’ve stolen it and Michael might come looking for it, or Corey and Michael are teaming up and Michael let him borrow the mask. There are too many crazy possibilities for Laurie to just ignore the mask.
It’s also unclear what Laurie thought was going on between Corey and Michael by the end of the film. Did she think Michael and Corey teamed up? Did she think Michael wanted revenge against her or did she assume it just another coincidence where outside circumstances brought them together. There wasn’t enough explanation regarding Laurie’s state of mind in Ends in my opinion.

It certainly too late to introduce a new villain, and unfitting with the previous two movies. The story of Ends would be better put as extension of the trilogy, rather than the closing of the trilogy.

As far as I'm concerned the Story of Michael Myers ended with *Halloween II (1981).* Michael Myers died in that movie with Dr. Loomis who sacrificed his life and died in a blaze of glory.
Halloween 3: Season of the Witch I enjoy for being a fun anthology Halloween related film that completely leaves the whole Michael Myers thing behind it. It took me three watches to finally appreciate that film.
Even so I like Halloween 4, Halloween H20 and Halloween (2018), all of them got ruined by their Sequels.
Halloween 4 was ruined by Halloween 5 and 6. Then H20 was ruined by Resurrection and now Halloween (2018) which was ruined by Kills and Ends imo.

My interpretation of Lauree's sudden change at the beginning of the film is simple : Alison.
After the death of Karren, and knowing that was her wish to have Alison grow up as normal as possible,
Her being the "normal" grandmother was her looking after her granddaughter while honouring her daughter's wishes.
But the old Laurie never went away. The town never let her forget, and she ends up seeing Michael's influence on Corry.

Whatever problems people have with this trilogy or even Rob zombies first movie
At least he got a real mask
In his movie, Michael was terrifying
Yes, he was 6 foot eight but the mask and everything looked great
How many people do you notice twist themselves into pretzels trying to excuse how stupid he looks in Halloween for with the mask and the shoulder pads and the way he moves
Or the way he slinking along and H2O, like some sort of a Cat?
This movie portrayed, Michael, as well as he has ever been portrayed since one and two
The story for Halloween is very good
But the way Michael is portrayed ruins the entire thing

I really appreciate this thoughtful video. I enjoyed Halloween Ends, but I understand why some might not. I think it's a beautifully made and acted movie.

Thanks to your video I'm interested in revisiting this movie. I was more than happy with the first one and I defended the second - even the hospital mob which reminded me of Frankenstein. I didn't quite get the last one given, like most fans, that I was expecting something different. I like that Michael is older and weaker here, like Laurie, this gives the impression that their stories are coming to a close. Though no doubt, Michael as a character is going to come back again at some point. It's contractual ( thanks to Akkad) that Michael cannot be killed. SO...
There are some good ideas in the last one but like you said, too many stuffed into one movie and perhaps a quadrilogy would have been better than what we got. You really do wonder what Michael was doing in the 4 years between films. The vagabond looked after him yes, but what? he just took time off from being the 'embodiment of evil' which is what he really is. I'm with Loomis on that one. In terms of cinematography, production design and score - this movie is excellent. It's got me thinking about it again and I now want to revisit it. Great video - I've seen quite a few now and I recommend them to all horror fans.

I really want a new Halloween movie that Laurie doesn’t exist I love her in all the movies but I really want a movie that starts over with new characters and a new story so we can get something that’s new to the franchise.

We get a sequel to H4 with Danielle Harris coming back as Jamie in the near future. So no Laurie and likely new characters as well. Just the main protagonist will be back, the sweetest girl in the entire franchise.

Im curious if you were aware of the interviews and things that were said was going to happen in Halloween Ends while this trilogy was still in development. You mention the trilogy didnt have a complete story in mind but from what I gather it did, it was just that after Halloween Kills came out and got completely unjustified backlash, rewrites for Halloween Ends was announced. Granted they didnt say due to backlash we are are rewriting Ends but no studio would admit something like that. But in interviews things were said like the radio tower was going to be a major part of the movie with a fight taking place there, and that Laurie was going to bulldoze the Myers house down, and it was going to have action ect ect. There were rumors that the explanation they were going to go with for MM was going to be basically Silver Shamrock, which I wouldve liked as it wouldve tied everything in the series together. Some possible evidence that this was going to be the case is that a few weeks ago Christopher Nelson released quite a bit of unused Silver Shamrock art that was meant for Halloween Ends. Also something else to note is I asked James Jude Courtney in person if the window he looked out of in Halloween Kills originally had any bigger meaning or was a source of power, he thought for a few seconds and said he couldnt answer that (in the sense of should he answer it or not), so take that for what you will. It looks like the original vision of Halloween Ends was very different from what we got and I only really blame the fanbase for that. But that being said there are things that I like in this Halloween Ends but its not the finale I wanted.

The plan that DGG had for the trilogy began and ended at a tone for each entry. He knew what the vibe of each would be, but the narrative itself had not been planned out. In terms of the rewrites on Ends, those really were just a result of Green being pretty indesisive with where he wanted this story to go. Hell he was making adjustments in the editing process two weeks before the movie came out. He also enjoys when people can make their own interpretations of the things that happen in his movies, so he often won't answer questions that remove the intentional ambiguity. Ends was definitely a very different movie before, but the changes weren't a result of backlash on Kills. If that were the case the whole thing would've been scrapped because there's nothing fan-pleasing or safe about Ends. I love the movie all the same, but it's definitely a messy trilogy as a result of a lack of planning

This video is such a breath of fresh air to have found! I was watching your Sinister video where you mentioned enjoying this movie, and referenced this particular video. Finally found it tonight and was even more excited when I saw that it was over an hour long. Halloween is my favorite horror franchise. Has been since I saw the first movie when I was way too young. The new trilogy was so exciting; a chance to see these movies in the theaters as they were releasing like I wasn't old enough to do with any of the others. This installment especially spoke to me in a way Kills didn't at the time (I found that on my second watch through with a friend when we were marathoning the franchise, Kills was actually a lot of fun) and I was unsurprised but disappointed when it seemed to be universally hated.
So it was just. Awesome. To get to watch this and get your thoughts on it. The themes, the character development, the mentions of how good the music is. I kept telling my friend every time you said something that I'd thought when I watched it myself because I was so happy to not be the only one (well, one of two, when my friend and I marathon watched, it was their first time seeing any of the new movies and they loved Ends the best).
Hm, this got extra rambly. Just wanted to let you know that this video existing means a lot to me! I'm very happy to have found it and I already know it's one I'll come back to for a rewatch. Thank you so much for putting so much care and thought and effort into this! It's appreciated

Very good review I think you hit the nail right on the head.
I did like the whole thing that Michael Myers was Lori's brother though. It made a good explanation on why he targeted her, but I guess they wanted to ditch that.
    I actually liked Halloween H2O.
I think they should've kept Halloween 1-2-H20, Then the David Gordon Green trilogy.
I understand what they were trying to say With the whole Lori was just at the wrong place at the wrong time, but I don't know I didn't really like the erasing of the familiar connection between Lori and Michael I thought that Michael Myers being her brother added a sense of creepiness
Because she's such a good person and her brother is this maniacal psychopath, which is usually the case in most relationships between a brother and a sister when one turns out to have some serious mental health problems. The brother is usually the one afflicted, and yes, sometimes even the sister can be, but generally most psychopaths are males.
But oh my God, the score was amazing! I downloaded it during the middle of the movie during the Corey and Allison parts lol. I just couldn't dig their romance. I understand trauma bonding, but Allison would not go for a guy like Corey.
I'm pretty sure, even Andy Matichak would not go for a guy like Corey so you really have to suspend some disbelief. She wouldn't go for that frumpy town sheriff either.
I could see Allison being partnered up with a sweet but problematic guy named Brad, Chad, Brian, Paul, Sean, he may have not been captain of the football team, but he was athletic, didn't wear glasses someone you would see on the WB heartthrob lol.
You generally don't see the beautiful girl go for the geek. But maybe somewhere in the small town of Haddonfield Illinois that's what happens.
