As a local myself, here’s some tips to follow: 1. Respect. My teacher used to say “Hō’ihi aku, Hō’ihi mai,” which means “Respect is sent, respect is received.” Basically, treat everyone the way you like to be treated 2. If a local is walking on lava rocks, swimming near sharks, or anything like that, don’t try follow suit because you think you can. Locals (especially Hawaiians) know this place like the back of their hand. You more than likely don’t. 3. Don’t listen to stereotypes. No, we don’t live in grass shacks. No, not everyone lives next to a volcano. No, we don’t where grass skirts and coconut bras. And no, as badass as it is, we don’t ride sharks everywhere. We haven’t lived in grass shacks or anything like that since the 1850s. 4. Take a joke. This applies anywhere, but especially here. Locals love making fun of each other. But we know the line between good fun and bullying, and usually never cross it. So, if you’re the only one getting offended, maybe it’s something wrong with you. 5. We. Hate. Tourists. This is the reason I even wrote this. Tourists over the years have given themselves a very bad reputations among us locals. It’s a majority of them (especially the white ones from mainland) that just don’t have respect for the culture or natives. 6. Lastly, if like see true Hawaiian culture, try going to Merrie Monarch, Bishop Museum, Polynesian Cultural Center, things like that. Because of the near extinction of our culture, you won’t see it everywhere. Hawai’i is a beautiful place, but people are looking at the wrong beauties. The beauty lies within the land, the ocean, and the people, not some plastic flower lei or a brightly colored shirt.
Commonly, its the tourists who wear the colorful aloha shirts. Us locals, wear regular stuff like regae shirts or plain shorts. But it is true that you can wear whatever you want here.
